1 A nd Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, taketh both Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, sons of Reuben,

Or Core, figlio di Isar, figlio di Cheat, figlio di Levi, insieme con Datan e Abiram, figli di Eliab, e On, figlio di Pelet, tutti e tre della tribù di Ruben,

2 a nd they rise up before Moses, with men of the sons of Israel, two hundred and fifty, princes of the company, called of the convention, men of name,

insorsero contro Mosè con duecentocinquanta Israeliti autorevoli nella comunità, membri del consiglio, uomini rinomati;

3 a nd they are assembled against Moses and against Aaron, and say unto them, `Enough of you! for all the company -- all of them holy, and in their midst Jehovah; and wherefore do ye lift yourselves up above the assembly of Jehovah?'

e, radunatisi contro Mosè e contro Aaronne, dissero loro: «Basta! Tutta la comunità, tutti, dal primo all’ultimo, sono santi, e il Signore è in mezzo a loro; perché dunque vi mettete al di sopra dell’assemblea del Signore ?»

4 A nd Moses heareth, and falleth on his face,

Quando Mosè ebbe udito questo, si prostrò con la faccia a terra;

5 a nd he speaketh unto Korah, and unto all his company, saying, `Morning! -- and Jehovah is knowing those who are his, and him who is holy, and hath brought near unto Him; even him whom He doth fix on He bringeth near unto Him.

poi parlò a Core e a tutta la gente che era con lui, e disse: «Domani mattina il Signore farà conoscere chi è suo e chi è santo, e se lo farà avvicinare; farà avvicinare a sé colui che egli avrà scelto.

6 T his do: take to yourselves censers, Korah, and all his company,

Fate questo: prendete dei turiboli, tu, Core, e tutta la gente che è con te;

7 a nd put in them fire, and put on them perfume, before Jehovah to-morrow, and it hath been, the man whom Jehovah chooseth, he the holy one; -- enough of you, sons of Levi.'

domani li riempirete di fuoco e li coprirete d’incenso davanti al Signore: colui che il Signore sceglierà, sarà santo. Basta, figli di Levi!»

8 A nd Moses saith unto Korah, `Hear ye, I pray you, sons of Levi;

Mosè disse inoltre a Core: «Ora ascoltate, o figli di Levi!

9 i s it little to you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the company of Israel to bring you near unto Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the company to serve them? --

Vi sembra poco che il Dio d’Israele vi abbia scelti in mezzo alla comunità d’Israele e vi abbia fatto avvicinare a sé per fare il servizio del tabernacolo del Signore e per tenervi davanti alla comunità per esercitare il vostro ministero per lei?

10 y ea, He doth bring thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee -- and ye have sought also the priesthood!

Egli vi fa avvicinare a sé, te e tutti i tuoi fratelli figli di Levi con te, e pretendete anche il sacerdozio?

11 T herefore, thou and all thy company who are met against Jehovah; and Aaron, what he, that ye murmur against him?'

Per questo tu e tutta la gente che è con te avete fatto lega contro il Signore! Poiché chi è Aaronne che vi mettete a mormorare contro di lui?»

12 A nd Moses sendeth to call for Dathan and for Abiram sons of Eliab, and they say, `We do not come up;

E Mosè mandò a chiamare Datan e Abiram, figli di Eliab; ma essi dissero: «Noi non saliremo.

13 i s it little that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to put us to death in a wilderness that thou also certainly makest thyself prince over us?

Ti sembra poco l’averci fatto uscire da un paese dove scorrono il latte e il miele, per farci morire nel deserto? Vuoi elevarti su di noi come un capo?

14 Y ea, unto a land flowing with milk and honey thou hast not brought us in, nor dost thou give to us an inheritance of field and vineyard; the eyes of these men dost thou pick out? we do not come up.'

E poi, non ci hai davvero condotti in un paese dove scorrono il latte e il miele e non ci hai dato possesso di campi né di vigne! Credi forse di poter bendare gli occhi a questa gente? Noi non saliremo».

15 A nd it is very displeasing to Moses, and he saith unto Jehovah, `Turn not Thou unto their present; not one ass from them have I taken, nor have I afflicted one of them.'

Allora Mosè si adirò molto e disse al Signore: «Non gradire la loro oblazione; io non ho preso da costoro neppure un asino, e non ho fatto torto ad alcuno di loro».

16 A nd Moses saith unto Korah, `Thou and all thy company, be ye before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow;

Poi Mosè disse a Core: «Tu e tutta la tua gente trovatevi domani davanti al Signore: tu e loro con Aaronne;

17 a nd take ye each his censer, and ye have put on them perfume, and brought near before Jehovah, each his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; and thou and Aaron, each his censer.'

e ciascuno di voi prenda il suo turibolo, vi metta dell’incenso, e porti ciascuno il suo turibolo davanti al Signore: saranno duecentocinquanta turiboli. Anche tu e Aaronne prenderete ciascuno il vostro turibolo».

18 A nd they take each his censer, and put on them fire, and lay on them perfume, and they stand at the opening of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.

Essi dunque presero ciascuno il proprio turibolo, vi misero del fuoco, vi posero sopra dell’incenso e si fermarono all’ingresso della tenda di convegno; lo stesso fecero Mosè e Aaronne.

19 A nd Korah assembleth against them all the company unto the opening of the tent of meeting, and the honour of Jehovah is seen by all the company.

E Core convocò tutta la comunità contro Mosè e Aaronne all’ingresso della tenda di convegno; e la gloria del Signore apparve a tutta la comunità.

20 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

Il Signore parlò a Mosè e ad Aaronne e disse:

21 ` Be ye separated from the midst of this company, and I consume them in a moment;'

«Separatevi da questa gente e io li consumerò in un attimo».

22 a nd they fall on their faces, and say, `God, God of the spirits of all flesh -- the one man sinneth, and against all the company Thou art wroth!'

Ma essi si prostrarono con la faccia a terra e dissero: «O Dio, Dio che dai la vita a ogni creatura! Un uomo solo ha peccato, e vorresti adirarti contro tutta la comunità?»

23 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

E il Signore disse a Mosè:

24 ` Speak unto the company, saying, Go ye up from round about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'

«Parla alla comunità e dille: “Allontanatevi dalla dimora di Core, di Datan e di Abiram”».

25 A nd Moses riseth, and goeth unto Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel go after him,

Mosè si alzò e andò da Datan e da Abiram; e gli anziani d’Israele lo seguirono.

26 a nd he speaketh unto the company, saying, `Turn aside, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and come not against anything that they have, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.'

Egli disse alla comunità: «Allontanatevi dalle tende di questi uomini malvagi e non toccate nulla di ciò che appartiene a loro, affinché non periate a causa di tutti i loro peccati».

27 A nd they go up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan and Abiram, from round about, and Dathan, and Abiram have come out, standing at the opening of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their infants.

Così quelli si allontanarono dalla dimora di Core, di Datan e di Abiram. Datan e Abiram uscirono e si fermarono all’ingresso delle loro tende con le loro mogli, i loro figli e i loro bambini.

28 A nd Moses saith, `By this ye do know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works, that not from my own heart;

Mosè disse: «Da questo conoscerete che il Signore mi ha mandato per fare tutte queste cose, e che non le ho fatte di testa mia.

29 i f according to the death of all men these die -- or the charge of all men is charged upon them -- Jehovah hath not sent me;

Se questa gente muore come muoiono tutti gli uomini, se la loro sorte è la sorte comune a tutti gli uomini, il Signore non mi ha mandato;

30 a nd if a strange thing Jehovah do, and the ground hath opened her mouth and swallowed them, and all that they have, and they have gone down alive to Sheol -- then ye have known that these men have despised Jehovah.'

ma se il Signore fa una cosa nuova, se la terra apre la sua bocca e li ingoia con tutto quello che appartiene a loro e se essi scendono vivi nel soggiorno dei morti, allora riconoscerete che questi uomini hanno disprezzato il Signore ».

31 A nd it cometh to pass at his finishing speaking all these words, that the ground which under them cleaveth,

Appena egli ebbe finito di pronunciare tutte queste parole, il suolo si spaccò sotto i piedi di quelli,

32 a nd the earth openeth her mouth, and swalloweth them, and their houses, and all the men who for Korah, and all the goods,

la terra spalancò la sua bocca e li ingoiò: essi e le loro famiglie, con tutta la gente che apparteneva a Core e tutta la loro roba.

33 a nd they go down, they, and all that they have, alive to Sheol, and the earth closeth over them, and they perish from the midst of the assembly;

Scesero vivi nel soggiorno dei morti; la terra si richiuse su di loro, ed essi scomparvero dal mezzo dell’assemblea.

34 a nd all Israel who round about them have fled at their voice, for they said, `Lest the earth swallow us;'

Tutto Israele che era intorno a loro fuggì alle loro grida; perché dicevano: «Che la terra non ingoi anche noi!»

35 a nd fire hath come out from Jehovah, and consumeth the two hundred and fifty men bringing near the perfume.

Un fuoco uscì dalla presenza del Signore e divorò i duecentocinquanta uomini che offrivano l’incenso.

36 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Poi il Signore disse a Mosè:

37 ` Say unto Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, and he lifteth up the censers from the midst of the burning, and the fire scatter thou yonder, for they have been hallowed,

«Di’ a Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne, di tirar fuori i turiboli dall’incendio e di disperdere qua e là il fuoco, perché quelli sono sacri;

38 t he censers of these sinners against their own souls; and they have made them spread-out plates, a covering for the altar, for they have brought them near before Jehovah, and they are hallowed; and they are become a sign to the sons of Israel.'

e dei turiboli di quegli uomini che hanno peccato al prezzo della loro vita si facciano tante lamine battute per rivestirne l’altare, poiché sono stati presentati davanti al Signore e quindi sono sacri; serviranno di segno ai figli d’Israele».

39 A nd Eleazar the priest taketh the brazen censers which they who are burnt had brought near, and they spread them out, a covering for the altar --

Il sacerdote Eleazar prese i turiboli di bronzo presentati dagli uomini che erano stati bruciati, ne fece delle lamine per rivestirne l’altare

40 a memorial to the sons of Israel, so that a stranger who is not of the seed of Aaron doth not draw near to make a perfume before Jehovah, and is not as Korah, and as his company, -- as Jehovah hath spoken by the hand of Moses to him.

e ricordare ai figli d’Israele che nessun estraneo ai discendenti di Aaronne deve accostarsi per ardere incenso davanti al Signore, affinché non gli capiti la sorte di Core e di quelli che erano con lui. Eleazar fece come il Signore gli aveva detto per mezzo di Mosè.

41 A nd all the company of the sons of Israel murmur, on the morrow, against Moses and against Aaron, saying, `Ye -- ye have put to death the people of Jehovah.'

Il giorno seguente tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele mormorò contro Mosè e Aaronne e disse: «Voi avete fatto morire il popolo del Signore ».

42 A nd it cometh to pass, in the company being assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they turn towards the tent of meeting, and lo, the cloud hath covered it, and the honour of Jehovah is seen;

E avvenne che, mentre la comunità si radunava contro Mosè e Aaronne, i figli d’Israele si volsero verso la tenda di convegno; ed ecco che la nuvola la ricoprì e apparve la gloria del Signore.

43 a nd Moses cometh -- Aaron also -- unto the front of the tent of meeting.

Mosè e Aaronne vennero davanti alla tenda di convegno.

44 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Il Signore disse a Mosè:

45 ` Get you up from the midst of this company, and I consume them in a moment;' and they fall on their faces,

«Allontanatevi da questa comunità e io li consumerò in un attimo». Ed essi si prostrarono con la faccia a terra.

46 a nd Moses saith unto Aaron, `Take the censer, and put on it fire from off the altar, and place perfume, and go, hasten unto the company, and make atonement for them, for the wrath hath gone out from the presence of Jehovah -- the plague hath begun.'

Mosè disse ad Aaronne: «Prendi il turibolo, riempilo di fuoco preso dall’altare, mettici sopra dell’incenso e portalo presto in mezzo alla comunità e fa’ l’espiazione per loro; poiché l’ira del Signore è scoppiata, il flagello è già cominciato».

47 A nd Aaron taketh as Moses hath spoken, and runneth unto the midst of the assembly, and lo, the plague hath begun among the people; and he giveth the perfume, and maketh atonement for the people,

Aaronne prese il turibolo, come Mosè aveva detto, corse in mezzo all’assemblea, ed ecco che il flagello era già cominciato fra il popolo. Aaronne mise l’incenso nel turibolo e fece l’espiazione per il popolo.

48 a nd standeth between the dead and the living, and the plague is restrained;

Si fermò tra i morti e i vivi e il flagello cessò.

49 a nd those who die by the plague are fourteen thousand and seven hundred, apart from those who die for the matter of Korah;

I morti a causa del flagello furono quattordicimilasettecento, oltre a quelli che morirono per il fatto di Core.

50 a nd Aaron turneth back unto Moses, unto the opening of the tent of meeting, and the plague hath been restrained.

Aaronne tornò da Mosè all’ingresso della tenda di convegno e il flagello era cessato.
