1 A nd it came to pass, on his going into the house of a certain one of the chiefs of the Pharisees, on a sabbath, to eat bread, that they were watching him,

Gesù entrò di sabato in casa di uno dei principali farisei per prendere cibo, ed essi lo stavano osservando;

2 a nd lo, there was a certain dropsical man before him;

ed ecco, davanti a lui c’era un uomo idropico.

3 a nd Jesus answering spake to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, `Is it lawful on the sabbath-day to heal?'

Gesù prese a dire ai dottori della legge e ai farisei: «È lecito o no far guarigioni in giorno di sabato?» Ma essi tacquero.

4 a nd they were silent, and having taken hold of, he healed him, and let go;

Allora egli lo prese per mano, lo guarì e lo congedò.

5 a nd answering them he said, `Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a pit, and he will not immediately draw it up on the sabbath-day?'

Poi disse loro: «Chi di voi, se gli cade nel pozzo un figlio o un bue, non lo tira subito fuori in giorno di sabato?»

6 a nd they were not able to answer him again unto these things.

Ed essi non potevano rispondere nulla in contrario. Lezioni di umiltà e di carità

7 A nd he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them,

Notando poi come gli invitati sceglievano i primi posti, disse loro una parabola:

8 ` When thou mayest be called by any one to marriage-feasts, thou mayest not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than thou may have been called by him,

«Quando sarai invitato a nozze da qualcuno, non ti mettere a tavola al primo posto, perché può darsi che sia stato invitato da lui qualcuno più importante di te,

9 a nd he who did call thee and him having come shall say to thee, Give to this one place, and then thou mayest begin with shame to occupy the last place.

e chi ha invitato te e lui venga a dirti: “Cedi il posto a questo!” e tu debba con tua vergogna andare allora a occupare l’ultimo posto.

10 ` But, when thou mayest be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called thee may come, he may say to thee, Friend, come up higher; then thou shalt have glory before those reclining with thee;

Ma quando sarai invitato, va’ a metterti all’ultimo posto, affinché quando verrà colui che ti ha invitato, ti dica: “Amico, vieni più avanti”. Allora ne avrai onore davanti a tutti quelli che saranno a tavola con te.

11 b ecause every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.'

Poiché chiunque si innalza sarà abbassato e chi si abbassa sarà innalzato».

12 A nd he said also to him who did call him, `When thou mayest make a dinner or a supper, be not calling thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor rich neighbours, lest they may also call thee again, and a recompense may come to thee;

Diceva pure a colui che lo aveva invitato: «Quando fai un pranzo o una cena, non invitare i tuoi amici, né i tuoi fratelli, né i tuoi parenti, né i vicini ricchi, perché essi potrebbero a loro volta invitare te, e così ti sarebbe reso il contraccambio;

13 b ut when thou mayest make a feast, be calling poor, maimed, lame, blind,

ma quando fai un convito, chiama poveri, storpi, zoppi, ciechi,

14 a nd happy thou shalt be, because they have not to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed to thee in the rising again of the righteous.'

e sarai beato, perché non hanno modo di contraccambiare; infatti il contraccambio ti sarà reso alla risurrezione dei giusti». Parabola del gran convito

15 A nd one of those reclining with him, having heard these things, said to him, `Happy he who shall eat bread in the reign of God;'

Uno degli invitati, udite queste cose, gli disse: «Beato chi mangerà pane nel regno di Dio!»

16 a nd he said to him, `A certain man made a great supper, and called many,

Gesù gli disse: «Un uomo preparò una gran cena e invitò molti;

17 a nd he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to those having been called, Be coming, because now are all things ready.

e all’ora della cena mandò il suo servo a dire agli invitati: “Venite, perché è già pronto”.

18 ` And they began with one consent all to excuse themselves: The first said to him, A field I bought, and I have need to go forth and see it; I beg of thee, have me excused.

Tutti insieme cominciarono a scusarsi. Il primo gli disse: “Ho comprato un campo e ho necessità di andarlo a vedere; ti prego di scusarmi”.

19 ` And another said, Five yoke of oxen I bought, and I go on to prove them; I beg of thee, have me excused:

Un altro disse: “Ho comprato cinque paia di buoi e vado a provarli; ti prego di scusarmi”.

20 a nd another said, A wife I married, and because of this I am not able to come.

Un altro disse: “Ho preso moglie e perciò non posso venire”.

21 ` And that servant having come, told to his lord these things, then the master of the house, having been angry, said to his servant, Go forth quickly to the broad places and lanes of the city, and the poor, and maimed, and lame, and blind, bring in hither.

Il servo tornò e riferì queste cose al suo signore. Allora il padrone di casa si adirò e disse al suo servo: “Va’ presto per le piazze e per le vie della città, e conduci qua poveri, storpi, ciechi e zoppi”.

22 ` And the servant said, Sir, it hath been done as thou didst command, and still there is room.

Poi il servo disse: “Signore, ciò che hai comandato è stato fatto e c’è ancora posto”.

23 ` And the lord said unto the servant, Go forth to the ways and hedges, and constrain to come in, that my house may be filled;

Il signore disse al servo: “Va’ fuori per le strade e lungo le siepi e costringili a entrare, affinché la mia casa sia piena.

24 f or I say to you, that none of those men who have been called shall taste of my supper.'

Perché io vi dico che nessuno di quegli uomini che erano stati invitati assaggerà la mia cena”». Il vero discepolo di Gesù

25 A nd there were going on with him great multitudes, and having turned, he said unto them,

Or molta gente andava con lui; ed egli, rivolto verso di loro, disse:

26 ` If any one doth come unto me, and doth not hate his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yet even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple;

«Se uno viene a me e non odia suo padre, sua madre, la moglie, i figli, i fratelli, le sorelle e persino la sua propria vita, non può essere mio discepolo.

27 a nd whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, is not able to be my disciple.

E chi non porta la sua croce e non viene dietro a me, non può essere mio discepolo.

28 ` For who of you, willing to build a tower, doth not first, having sat down, count the expense, whether he have the things for completing?

Chi di voi, infatti, volendo costruire una torre, non si siede prima a calcolare la spesa per vedere se ha abbastanza per poterla finire?

29 l est that he having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all who are beholding may begin to mock him,

Perché non succeda che, quando ne abbia posto le fondamenta e non la possa finire, tutti quelli che la vedranno comincino a beffarsi di lui, dicendo:

30 s aying -- This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

“Quest’uomo ha cominciato a costruire e non ha potuto terminare”.

31 ` Or what king going on to engage with another king in war, doth not, having sat down, first consult if he be able with ten thousand to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him?

Oppure, qual è il re che, partendo per muovere guerra a un altro re, non si sieda prima a esaminare se con diecimila uomini può affrontare colui che gli viene contro con ventimila?

32 a nd if not so -- he being yet a long way off -- having sent an embassy, he doth ask the things for peace.

Se no, mentre quello è ancora lontano, gli manda un’ambasciata e chiede di trattare la pace.

33 ` So, then, every one of you who doth not take leave of all that he himself hath, is not able to be my disciple.

Così dunque ognuno di voi, che non rinuncia a tutto quello che ha, non può essere mio discepolo.

34 ` The salt good, but if the salt doth become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned?

Il sale, certo, è buono; ma se anche il sale diventa insipido, con che cosa gli si darà sapore?

35 n either for land nor for manure is it fit -- they cast it without. He who is having ears to hear -- let him hear.'

Non serve né per il terreno, né per il concime; lo si butta via. Chi ha orecchi per udire oda».
