1 B ecome, then, followers of God, as children beloved,

Siate dunque imitatori di Dio, come figli amati;

2 a nd walk in love, as also the Christ did love us, and did give himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odour of a sweet smell,

e camminate nell’amore come anche Cristo ci ha amati e ha dato se stesso per noi in offerta e sacrificio a Dio quale profumo di odore soave.

3 a nd whoredom, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints;

Come si addice ai santi, né fornicazione, né alcuna impurità, né avarizia, sia neppure nominata tra di voi;

4 a lso filthiness, and foolish talking, or jesting, -- the things not fit -- but rather thanksgiving;

né oscenità, né parole sciocche o volgari, che sono cose sconvenienti; ma piuttosto abbondi il ringraziamento.

5 f or this ye know, that every whoremonger, or unclean, or covetous person, who is an idolater, hath no inheritance in the reign of the Christ and God.

Perché, sappiatelo bene, nessun fornicatore o impuro o avaro (che è un idolatra) ha eredità nel regno di Cristo e di Dio.

6 L et no one deceive you with vain words, for because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the sons of the disobedience,

Nessuno vi seduca con vani ragionamenti; infatti è per queste cose che l’ira di Dio viene sugli uomini ribelli.

7 b ecome not, then, partakers with them,

Non siate dunque loro compagni;

8 f or ye were once darkness, and now light in the Lord; as children of light walk ye,

perché in passato eravate tenebre, ma ora siete luce nel Signore. Comportatevi come figli di luce

9 f or the fruit of the Spirit in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth,

– poiché il frutto della luce consiste in tutto ciò che è bontà, giustizia e verità –

10 p roving what is well-pleasing to the Lord,

esaminando che cosa sia gradito al Signore.

11 a nd have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of the darkness and rather even convict,

Non partecipate alle opere infruttuose delle tenebre; piuttosto denunciatele;

12 f or the things in secret done by them it is a shame even to speak of,

perché è vergognoso perfino il parlare delle cose che costoro fanno di nascosto.

13 a nd all the things reproved by the light are manifested, for everything that is manifested is light;

Ma tutte le cose, quando sono denunciate dalla luce, diventano manifeste;

14 w herefore he saith, `Arouse thyself, thou who art sleeping, and arise out of the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.'

poiché tutto ciò che è manifesto, è luce. Per questo è detto: «Risvègliati, o tu che dormi, e risorgi dai morti, e Cristo ti inonderà di luce».

15 S ee, then, how exactly ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise,

Guardate dunque con diligenza a come vi comportate; non da stolti, ma da saggi;

16 r edeeming the time, because the days are evil;

ricuperando il tempo perché i giorni sono malvagi.

17 b ecause of this become not fools, but -- understanding what the will of the Lord,

Perciò non siate disavveduti, ma intendete bene quale sia la volontà del Signore.

18 a nd be not drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness, but be filled in the Spirit,

Non ubriacatevi! Il vino porta alla dissolutezza. Ma siate ricolmi di Spirito,

19 s peaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

parlandovi con salmi, inni e cantici spirituali, cantando e salmeggiando con il vostro cuore al Signore;

20 g iving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the God and Father;

ringraziando continuamente per ogni cosa Dio Padre, nel nome del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo;

21 s ubjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of God.

sottomettendovi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo. Mogli e mariti

22 T he wives! to your own husbands subject yourselves, as to the Lord,

Mogli, siate sottomesse ai vostri mariti, come al Signore;

23 b ecause the husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ head of the assembly, and he is saviour of the body,

il marito infatti è capo della moglie, come anche Cristo è capo della chiesa, lui, che è il Salvatore del corpo.

24 b ut even as the assembly is subject to Christ, so also the wives to their own husbands in everything.

Ora come la chiesa è sottomessa a Cristo, così anche le mogli devono essere sottomesse ai loro mariti in ogni cosa.

25 T he husbands! love your own wives, as also the Christ did love the assembly, and did give himself for it,

Mariti, amate le vostre mogli, come anche Cristo ha amato la chiesa e ha dato se stesso per lei,

26 t hat he might sanctify it, having cleansed with the bathing of the water in the saying,

per santificarla dopo averla purificata lavandola con l’acqua della parola,

27 t hat he might present it to himself the assembly in glory, not having spot or wrinkle, or any of such things, but that it may be holy and unblemished;

per farla comparire davanti a sé, gloriosa, senza macchia, senza ruga o altri simili difetti, ma santa e irreprensibile.

28 s o ought the husbands to love their own wives as their own bodies: he who is loving his own wife -- himself he doth love;

Allo stesso modo anche i mariti devono amare le loro mogli, come la loro propria persona. Chi ama sua moglie ama se stesso.

29 f or no one ever his own flesh did hate, but doth nourish and cherish it, as also the Lord -- the assembly,

Infatti nessuno ha mai odiato la propria persona, anzi la nutre e la cura teneramente, come anche Cristo fa per la chiesa,

30 b ecause members we are of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones;

poiché siamo membra del suo corpo.

31 ` for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they shall be -- the two -- for one flesh;'

Perciò l’uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà a sua moglie e i due diverranno una carne sola.

32 t his secret is great, and I speak in regard to Christ and to the assembly;

Questo mistero è grande; dico questo riguardo a Cristo e alla chiesa.

33 b ut ye also, every one in particular -- let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife -- that she may reverence the husband.

Ma d’altronde, anche fra di voi, ciascuno individualmente ami sua moglie, come ama se stesso; e altresì la moglie rispetti il marito.
