1 C omfort ye, comfort ye, My people, saith your God.

«Consolate, consolate il mio popolo», dice il vostro Dio.

2 S peak to the heart of Jerusalem, and call to her, That her warfare hath been completed, That accepted hath been her punishment, That she hath received from the hand of Jehovah Double for all her sins.

«Parlate al cuore di Gerusalemme e proclamatele che il tempo della sua schiavitù è compiuto; che il debito della sua iniquità è pagato, che essa ha ricevuto dalla mano del Signore il doppio per tutti i suoi peccati».

3 A voice is crying -- in a wilderness -- Prepare ye the way of Jehovah, Make straight in a desert a highway to our God.

La voce di uno grida: «Preparate nel deserto la via del Signore, appianate nei luoghi aridi una strada per il nostro Dio!

4 E very valley is raised up, And every mountain and hill become low, And the crooked place hath become a plain, And the entangled places a valley.

Ogni valle sia colmata, ogni monte e ogni colle siano abbassati; i luoghi scoscesi siano livellati, i luoghi accidentati diventino pianeggianti.

5 A nd revealed hath been the honour of Jehovah, And seen have all flesh together, For the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken.

Allora la gloria del Signore sarà rivelata e tutti, allo stesso tempo, la vedranno; perché la bocca del Signore l’ha detto».

6 A voice is saying, `Call,' And he said, `What do I call?' All flesh grass, and all its goodliness As a flower of the field:

Una voce dice: «Grida!» E si risponde: «Che griderò?» «Grida che ogni carne è come l’erba e che tutta la sua grazia è come il fiore del campo.

7 W ithered hath grass, faded the flower, For the Spirit of Jehovah blew upon it, Surely the people grass;

L’erba si secca, il fiore appassisce quando il soffio del Signore vi passa sopra; certo, il popolo è come l’erba.

8 W ithered hath grass, faded the flower, But a word of our God riseth for ever.

L’erba si secca, il fiore appassisce, ma la parola del nostro Dio dura per sempre ».

9 O n a high mountain get thee up, O Zion, Proclaiming tidings, Lift up with power thy voice, O Jerusalem, proclaiming tidings, Lift up, fear not, say to cities of Judah, `Lo, your God.'

Tu che porti la buona notizia a Sion, sali sopra un alto monte! Tu che porti la buona notizia a Gerusalemme, alza forte la voce! Alzala, non temere! Di’ alle città di Giuda: «Ecco il vostro Dio!»

10 L o, the Lord Jehovah with strength cometh, And His arm is ruling for Him, Lo, His hire with Him, and His wage before Him.

Ecco, il Signore, Dio, viene con potenza, con il suo braccio egli domina. Ecco, il suo salario è con lui, la sua ricompensa lo precede.

11 A s a shepherd His flock He feedeth, With His arm He gathereth lambs, And in His bosom He carrieth: Suckling ones He leadeth.

Come un pastore, egli pascerà il suo gregge: raccoglierà gli agnelli in braccio, li porterà sul petto, condurrà le pecore che allattano.

12 W ho hath measured in the hollow of his hand the waters? And the heavens by a span hath meted out, And comprehended in a measure the dust of the earth, And hath weighed in scales the mountains, And the hills in a balance?

Chi ha misurato le acque nel cavo della sua mano o preso le dimensioni del cielo con il palmo? Chi ha raccolto la polvere della terra in una misura o pesato le montagne con la stadera e i colli con la bilancia?

13 W ho hath meted out the Spirit of Jehovah, And, His counsellor, doth teach Him!

Chi ha preso le dimensioni dello Spirito del Signore o chi gli è stato consigliere per insegnargli qualcosa?

14 W ith whom consulted He, That he causeth Him to understand? And teacheth Him in the path of judgment, And teacheth Him knowledge? And the way of understanding causeth Him to know?

Chi ha egli consultato perché gli desse istruzione e gli insegnasse il sentiero della giustizia, gli impartisse la saggezza e gli facesse conoscere la via del discernimento?

15 L o, nations as a drop from a bucket, And as small dust of the balance, have been reckoned, Lo, isles as a small thing He taketh up.

Ecco, le nazioni sono come una goccia che cade da un secchio, come la polvere minuta delle bilance; ecco, le isole sono come pulviscolo che vola.

16 A nd Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, Nor its beasts sufficient for a burnt-offering.

Il Libano non basterebbe a procurare il fuoco e i suoi animali non basterebbero per l’olocausto.

17 A ll the nations as nothing before Him, Less than nothing and emptiness, They have been reckoned to Him.

Tutte le nazioni sono come nulla davanti a lui; egli le valuta meno che nulla, una vanità.

18 A nd unto whom do ye liken God, And what likeness do ye compare to Him?

A chi vorreste assomigliare Dio? Con quale immagine lo rappresentereste?

19 T he graven image poured out hath a artizan, And a refiner with gold spreadeth it over, And chains of silver he is refining.

Un artista fonde l’idolo, l’orafo lo ricopre d’oro e vi salda delle catenelle d’argento.

20 H e who is poor heave-offerings, A tree not rotten doth choose, A skilful artizan he seeketh for it, To establish a graven image -- not moved.

Colui che la povertà costringe a offrire poco sceglie un legno che non marcisca e si procura un abile artigiano per fare un idolo che non vacilli.

21 D o ye not know -- do ye not hear? Hath it not been declared from the first to you? Have ye not understood the foundations of the earth?

Ma non lo sapete? Non l’avete sentito? Non vi è stato annunciato fin dal principio? Non avete riflettuto sulla fondazione della terra?

22 H e who is sitting on the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants as grasshoppers, He who is stretching out as a thin thing the heavens, And spreadeth them as a tent to dwell in.

Egli è assiso sulla volta della terra, da lì gli abitanti appaiono come cavallette; egli distende i cieli come una cortina e li spiega come una tenda per abitarvi;

23 H e who is making princes become nothing, Judges of earth as emptiness hath made;

egli riduce i prìncipi a nulla e annienta i giudici della terra;

24 Y ea, they have not been planted, Yea, they have not been sown, Yea, not taking root in the earth is their stock, And also He hath blown upon them, and they wither, And a whirlwind as stubble taketh them away.

appena piantati, appena seminati, appena il loro fusto ha preso radici in terra, egli vi soffia contro e quelli inaridiscono, e l’uragano li porta via come stoppia.

25 A nd unto whom do ye liken Me, And I equal? saith the Holy One.

«A chi dunque mi vorreste assomigliare, a chi sarei io uguale?», dice il Santo.

26 L ift up on high your eyes, And see -- who hath prepared these? He who is bringing out by number their host, To all of them by name He calleth, By abundance of strength (And strong in power) not one is lacking.

Levate gli occhi in alto e guardate: chi ha creato queste cose? Egli le fa uscire e conta il loro esercito, le chiama tutte per nome; per la grandezza del suo potere e per la potenza della sua forza, non ne manca una.

27 W hy sayest thou, O Jacob? and speakest thou, O Israel? `My way hath been hid from Jehovah, And from my God my judgment passeth over.'

Perché dici tu, Giacobbe, e perché parli così, Israele: «La mia via è occulta al Signore e al mio diritto non bada il mio Dio»?

28 H ast thou not known? hast thou not heard? The God of the age -- Jehovah, Preparer of the ends of the earth, Is not wearied nor fatigued, There is no searching of His understanding.

Non lo sai tu? Non l’hai mai udito? Il Signore è Dio eterno, il creatore degli estremi confini della terra; egli non si affatica e non si stanca; la sua intelligenza è imperscrutabile.

29 H e is giving power to the weary, And to those not strong He increaseth might.

Egli dà forza allo stanco e accresce il vigore a colui che è spossato.

30 E ven youths are wearied and fatigued, And young men utterly stumble,

I giovani si affaticano e si stancano; i più forti vacillano e cadono;

31 B ut those expecting Jehovah pass power, They raise up the pinion as eagles, They run and are not fatigued, They go on and do not faint!

ma quelli che sperano nel Signore acquistano nuove forze, si alzano a volo come aquile, corrono e non si stancano, camminano e non si affaticano.
