1 I n that day sung is this song in the land of Judah: `We have a strong city, Salvation He doth make walls and bulwark.

In quel giorno si canterà questo cantico nel paese di Giuda: «Noi abbiamo una città forte; il Signore vi pone la salvezza con mura e bastioni.

2 O pen ye the gates, that enter may a righteous nation, Preserving stedfastness.

Aprite le porte ed entri la nazione giusta, che si mantiene fedele.

3 A n imagination supported Thou fortifiest peace -- peace! For in Thee it is confident.

A colui che è fermo nei suoi sentimenti tu conservi la pace, la pace, perché in te confida.

4 T rust ye in Jehovah for ever, For in Jah Jehovah a rock of ages,

Confidate per sempre nel Signore, perché il Signore, sì, il Signore, è la roccia dei secoli».

5 F or He bowed down the dwellers on high, A city set on high He maketh low, He maketh it low unto the earth, He causeth it to come unto the dust,

Infatti egli ha umiliato quelli che stavano in alto; egli ha abbassato la città elevata, l’ha abbassata fino a terra, l’ha stesa nella polvere.

6 T read it down doth a foot, Feet of the poor -- steps of the weak.

La calpestano i piedi, i piedi dell’oppresso; vi passano sopra i poveri.

7 T he path for the righteous uprightness, O upright One, The path of the righteous Thou dost ponder.

La via del giusto è diritta; tu rendi perfettamente piano il sentiero del giusto.

8 A lso, the path of Thy judgments, O Jehovah, we have waited Thee, To Thy name and to Thy remembrance the desire of the soul.

Sulla via dei tuoi giudizi, Signore, noi ti abbiamo aspettato! Al tuo nome, al tuo ricordo anela l’anima.

9 m y soul I desired Thee in the night, Also, my spirit within me I seek Thee earnestly, For when Thy judgments on the earth, The inhabitants of the world have learned righteousness.

Con l’anima mia ti desidero durante la notte; con lo spirito che è dentro di me ti cerco; poiché, quando i tuoi giudizi si compiono sulla terra, gli abitanti del mondo imparano la giustizia.

10 T he wicked findeth favour, He hath not learned righteousness, In a land of straightforwardness he dealeth perversely, And seeth not the excellency of Jehovah.

Se si fa grazia all’empio, egli non impara la giustizia; agisce da perverso nel paese della rettitudine e non considera la maestà del Signore.

11 O Jehovah, high Thy hand -- they see not, They see the zeal of the people, and are ashamed, Also, the fire -- Thine adversaries, consumeth them.

Signore, la tua mano è alzata, ma quelli non la scorgono! Essi vedranno lo zelo che hai per il tuo popolo e saranno confusi; il fuoco divorerà i tuoi nemici.

12 O Jehovah, Thou appointest peace to us, For, all our works also Thou hast wrought for us.

Signore, tu ci darai la pace, poiché ogni opera nostra la compi tu per noi.

13 O Jehovah our God, lords have ruled us besides Thee, Only, by Thee we make mention of Thy name.

Signore, Dio nostro, altri signori, fuori di te, hanno dominato su di noi; ma, grazie a te solo, noi possiamo lodare il tuo nome.

14 D ead -- they live not, Rephaim, they rise not, Therefore Thou hast inspected and dost destroy them, Yea, thou destroyest all their memory.

Quelli sono morti, e non rivivranno più; sono ombre, e non risorgeranno più; tu li hai così puniti, li hai distrutti, ne hai fatto perire ogni ricordo.

15 T hou hast added to the nation, O Jehovah, Thou hast added to the nation, Thou hast been honoured, Thou hast put far off all the ends of earth.

Tu hai aumentato la nazione, o Signore! Hai aumentato la nazione, ti sei glorificato, hai allargato tutti i confini del paese.

16 O Jehovah, in distress they missed Thee, They have poured out a whisper, Thy chastisement on them.

Signore, essi nell’angoscia ti hanno cercato; si sono effusi in umile preghiera quando il tuo castigo li colpiva.

17 W hen a pregnant woman cometh near to the birth, She is pained -- she crieth in her pangs, So we have been from Thy face, O Jehovah.

Come una donna incinta che sta per partorire si contorce e grida durante le sue doglie, così siamo stati noi davanti a te, o Signore.

18 W e have conceived, we have been pained. We have brought forth as it were wind, Salvation we do not work in the earth, Nor do the inhabitants of the world fall.

Abbiamo concepito, siamo stati in doglie e, quando abbiamo partorito, era vento; non abbiamo portato nessuna salvezza al paese e non sono nati degli abitanti nel mondo.

19 ` Thy dead live -- My dead body they rise. Awake and sing, ye dwellers in the dust, For the dew of herbs thy dew, And the land of Rephaim thou causest to fall.

Rivivano i tuoi morti! Risorgano i miei cadaveri! Svegliatevi ed esultate, o voi che abitate nella polvere! Poiché la tua rugiada è rugiada di luce e la terra ridarà alla vita le ombre.

20 C ome, My people, enter into thy inner chambers, And shut thy doors behind thee, Hide thyself shortly a moment till the indignation pass over.

Va’, o mio popolo, entra nelle tue camere, chiudi le tue porte dietro a te; nasconditi per un istante, finché sia passata l’indignazione.

21 F or, lo, Jehovah is coming out of His place, To charge the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth upon him, And revealed hath the earth her blood, Nor doth she cover any more her slain!'

Poiché, ecco, il Signore esce dal suo luogo per punire l’iniquità degli abitanti della terra; la terra metterà allo scoperto il sangue che ha bevuto e non terrà più coperti gli uccisi.
