1 A nd before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who in the world -- to the end he loved them.

Ora prima della festa di Pasqua, Gesù, sapendo che era venuta per lui l’ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.

2 A nd supper being come, the devil already having put into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up,

Durante la cena, quando il diavolo aveva già messo in cuore a Giuda Iscariota, figlio di Simone, di tradirlo,

3 J esus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him -- into hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth,

Gesù, sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani e che era venuto da Dio e a Dio se ne tornava,

4 d oth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself;

si alzò da tavola, depose le sue vesti e, preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.

5 a fterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded.

Poi mise dell’acqua in una bacinella, e cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli e ad asciugarli con l’asciugatoio del quale era cinto.

6 H e cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, `Sir, thou -- dost thou wash my feet?'

Si avvicinò dunque a Simon Pietro, il quale gli disse: «Tu, Signore, lavare i piedi a me?»

7 J esus answered and said to him, `That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;'

Gesù gli rispose: «Tu non sai ora quello che io faccio, ma lo capirai dopo».

8 P eter saith to him, `Thou mayest not wash my feet -- to the age.' Jesus answered him, `If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;'

Pietro gli disse: «Non mi laverai mai i piedi!» Gesù gli rispose: «Se non ti lavo, non hai parte alcuna con me».

9 S imon Peter saith to him, `Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.'

E Simon Pietro: «Signore, non soltanto i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!»

10 J esus saith to him, `He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;'

Gesù gli disse: «Chi è lavato tutto non ha bisogno che di aver lavati i piedi, è tutto quanto puro; e voi siete puri, ma non tutti».

11 f or he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, `Ye are not all clean.'

Perché sapeva chi era colui che lo tradiva; per questo disse: «Non tutti siete puri».

12 W hen, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, `Do ye know what I have done to you?

Quando dunque ebbe loro lavato i piedi ed ebbe ripreso le sue vesti, si mise di nuovo a tavola, e disse loro: «Capite quello che vi ho fatto?

13 y e call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am;

Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore; e dite bene, perché lo sono.

14 i f then I did wash your feet -- the Lord and the Teacher -- ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

Se dunque io, che sono il Signore e il Maestro, vi ho lavato i piedi, anche voi dovete lavare i piedi gli uni agli altri.

15 ` For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do;

Infatti vi ho dato un esempio, affinché anche voi facciate come vi ho fatto io.

16 v erily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;

In verità, in verità vi dico che il servo non è maggiore del suo signore, né il messaggero è maggiore di colui che lo ha mandato.

17 i f these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them;

Se sapete queste cose, siete beati se le fate. Gesù annuncia il tradimento di Giuda

18 n ot concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel.

«Non parlo di voi tutti: io conosco quelli che ho scelti; ma così è affinché sia adempiuta la Scrittura: “Colui che mangia il mio pane, ha levato contro di me il suo calcagno”.

19 ` From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am;

Ve lo dico fin d’ora, prima che accada; affinché quando sarà accaduto, voi crediate che io sono.

20 v erily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.'

In verità, in verità vi dico: chi riceve colui che io avrò mandato riceve me, e chi riceve me riceve colui che mi ha mandato».

21 T hese things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;'

Dette queste cose, Gesù fu turbato nello spirito, e apertamente dichiarò così: «In verità, in verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà».

22 t he disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh.

I discepoli si guardavano l’un l’altro, non sapendo di chi parlasse.

23 A nd there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving;

Ora, a tavola, inclinato sul petto di Gesù, stava uno dei discepoli, quello che Gesù amava.

24 S imon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh,

Simon Pietro gli fece cenno di domandare chi fosse colui del quale parlava.

25 a nd that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, `Sir, who is it?'

Egli, chinatosi così sul petto di Gesù, gli domandò: «Signore, chi è?»

26 J esus answereth, `That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;' and having dipped the morsel, he giveth to Judas of Simon, Iscariot.

Gesù rispose: «È quello al quale darò il boccone dopo averlo intinto». E, intinto il boccone, lo prese e lo diede a Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota.

27 A nd after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, `What thou dost -- do quickly;'

Allora, dopo il boccone, Satana entrò in lui. Per cui Gesù gli disse: «Quel che fai, fallo presto».

28 a nd none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him,

{Ma} nessuno dei commensali comprese perché gli avesse detto così.

29 f or certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, `Buy what we have need of for the feast;' or that he may give something to the poor;

Difatti alcuni pensavano che, siccome Giuda teneva la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: «Compra quel che ci occorre per la festa»; oppure che desse qualcosa ai poveri.

30 h aving received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night.

Egli dunque, preso il boccone, uscì subito; ed era notte.

31 W hen, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, `Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him;

Quando egli fu uscito, Gesù disse: «Ora il Figlio dell’uomo è glorificato e Dio è glorificato in lui.

32 i f God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him.

{Se Dio è glorificato in lui,} Dio lo glorificherà anche in se stesso, e lo glorificherà presto.

33 ` Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews -- Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say now.

Figlioli, è per poco che sono ancora con voi. Voi mi cercherete; e, come ho detto ai Giudei: “Dove vado io, voi non potete venire”, così lo dico ora a voi.

34 ` A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another;

Io vi do un nuovo comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri. Come io vi ho amati, anche voi amatevi gli uni gli altri.

35 i n this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.'

Da questo conosceranno tutti che siete miei discepoli: se avete amore gli uni per gli altri». Gesù annuncia il rinnegamento di Pietro

36 S imon Peter saith to him, `Sir, whither dost thou go away?' Jesus answered him, `Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.'

Simon Pietro gli domandò: «Signore, dove vai?» Gesù {gli} rispose: «Dove vado io non puoi seguirmi per ora, ma mi seguirai più tardi».

37 P eter saith to him, `Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;'

Pietro gli disse: «Signore, perché non posso seguirti ora? Darò la mia vita per te!»

38 J esus answered him, `Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.'

Gesù rispose: «Darai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico che il gallo non canterà prima che tu non mi abbia rinnegato tre volte».
