1 A nd Abram goeth up from Egypt (he and his wife, and all that he hath, and Lot with him) towards the south;

Abramo dunque risalì dall’Egitto con sua moglie, con tutto quel che possedeva e con Lot, andando verso la regione meridionale.

2 a nd Abram exceedingly wealthy in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

Abramo era molto ricco di bestiame, d’argento e d’oro.

3 A nd he goeth on his journeyings from the south, even unto Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the commencement, between Bethel and Hai --

E continuò il suo viaggio dal meridione fino a Betel, al luogo dove da principio era stata la sua tenda, fra Betel e Ai,

4 u nto the place of the altar which he made there at the first, and there doth Abram preach in the name of Jehovah.

al luogo dov’era l’altare che egli aveva fatto prima; e lì Abramo invocò il nome del Signore.

5 A nd also to Lot, who is going with Abram, there hath been sheep and oxen and tents;

Ora Lot, che viaggiava con Abramo, aveva anch’egli pecore, buoi e tende.

6 a nd the land hath not suffered them to dwell together, for their substance hath been much, and they have not been able to dwell together;

Il paese non era sufficiente perché essi potessero abitarvi insieme, poiché il loro bestiame era numeroso ed essi non potevano stare insieme.

7 a nd there is a strife between those feeding Abram's cattle and those feeding Lot's cattle; and the Canaanite and the Perizzite then dwelling in the land.

Scoppiò una lite fra i pastori del bestiame di Abramo e i pastori del bestiame di Lot. I Cananei e i Ferezei abitavano a quel tempo nel paese.

8 A nd Abram saith unto Lot, `Let there not, I pray thee, be strife between me and thee, and between my shepherds and thy shepherds, for we men -- brethren.

Allora Abramo disse a Lot: «Ti prego, non ci sia discordia tra me e te, né tra i miei pastori e i tuoi pastori, perché siamo fratelli!

9 I s not all the land before thee? be parted, I pray thee, from me; if to the left, then I to the right; and if to the right, then I to the left.'

Tutto il paese non sta forse davanti a te? Ti prego, sepàrati da me! Se tu vai a sinistra, io andrò a destra; se tu vai a destra, io andrò a sinistra».

10 A nd Lot lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the whole circuit of the Jordan that it all a watered country (before Jehovah's destroying Sodom and Gomorrah, as Jehovah's garden, as the land of Egypt,) in thy coming toward Zoar,

Lot alzò gli occhi e vide l’intera pianura del Giordano. Prima che il Signore avesse distrutto Sodoma e Gomorra, essa era tutta irrigata fino a Soar, come il giardino del Signore, come il paese d’Egitto.

11 a nd Lot chooseth for himself the whole circuit of the Jordan; and Lot journeyeth from the east, and they are parted -- a man from his companion;

Lot scelse per sé tutta la pianura del Giordano e partì andando verso oriente. Così si separarono l’uno dall’altro.

12 A bram hath dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot hath dwelt in the cities of the circuit, and tenteth unto Sodom;

Abramo si stabilì nel paese di Canaan, Lot abitò nelle città della pianura e andò piantando le sue tende fino a Sodoma.

13 a nd the men of Sodom evil, and sinners before Jehovah exceedingly.

Gli abitanti di Sodoma erano perversi e grandi peccatori contro il Signore. Promesse ad Abramo

14 A nd Jehovah said unto Abram, after Lot's being parted from him, `Lift up, I pray thee, thine eyes, and look from the place where thou, northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward;

Il Signore disse ad Abramo, dopo che Lot si fu separato da lui: «Alza ora gli occhi e guarda, dal luogo dove sei, a settentrione, a meridione, a oriente, a occidente.

15 f or the whole of the land which thou are seeing, to thee I give it, and to thy seed -- to the age.

Tutto il paese che vedi lo darò a te e alla tua discendenza, per sempre.

16 A nd I have set thy seed as dust of the earth, so that, if one is able to number the dust of the earth, even thy seed is numbered;

E renderò la tua discendenza come la polvere della terra; in modo che, se qualcuno può contare la polvere della terra, potrà contare anche i tuoi discendenti.

17 r ise, go up and down through the land, to its length, and to its breadth, for to thee I give it.'

Àlzati, percorri il paese quant’è lungo e quant’è largo, perché io lo darò a te».

18 A nd Abram tenteth, and cometh, and dwelleth among the oaks of Mamre, which in Hebron, and buildeth there an altar to Jehovah.

Allora Abramo levò le sue tende e andò ad abitare alle querce di Mamre, che sono a Ebron, e qui costruì un altare al Signore.
