1 T he burden of Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz hath seen:

Oracolo contro Babilonia, rivelato a Isaia, figlio di Amots.

2 ` On a high mountain lift ye up an ensign, Raise the voice to them, wave the hand, And they go in to the openings of nobles.

Sopra un nudo monte innalzate un vessillo, chiamateli a gran voce, fate segno con la mano, ed entrino nelle porte dei prìncipi!

3 I have given charge to My sanctified ones, Also I have called My mighty ones for Mine anger, Those rejoicing at Mine excellency.'

Io ho dato ordini a quelli che mi sono consacrati, ho chiamato i miei prodi, ministri della mia ira, quelli che esultano nella mia grandezza.

4 A voice of a multitude in the mountains, A likeness of a numerous people, A voice of noise from the kingdoms of nations who are gathered, Jehovah of Hosts inspecting a host of battle!

Si ode sui monti un rumore di gente, come quello di un popolo immenso; il rumore di un tumulto di regni, di nazioni radunate: il Signore degli eserciti passa in rivista l’esercito che va a combattere.

5 T hey are coming in from a land afar off, From the end of the heavens, Jehovah and the instruments of His indignation, To destroy all the land.

Vengono da un paese lontano, dall’estremità dei cieli, il Signore e gli strumenti della sua ira, per distruggere tutto il paese.

6 H owl ye, for near the day of Jehovah, As destruction from the Mighty it cometh.

Urlate, poiché il giorno del Signore è vicino; esso viene come una devastazione dell’Onnipotente.

7 T herefore, all hands do fail, And every heart of man doth melt.

Perciò tutte le mani diventano fiacche, ogni cuore d’uomo viene meno.

8 A nd they have been troubled, Pains and pangs they take, As a travailing woman they are pained, A man at his friend they marvel, The appearance of flames -- their faces!

Sono colti da spavento, sono presi da spasimi e da doglie; si contorcono come donna che partorisce, si guardano l’un l’altro sbigottiti, le loro facce sono facce di fuoco.

9 L o, the day of Jehovah doth come, Fierce, with wrath, and heat of anger, To make the land become a desolation, Yea, its sinning ones He destroyeth from it.

Ecco, il giorno del Signore giunge: giorno crudele, d’indignazione e d’ira furente, che farà della terra un deserto e ne distruggerà i peccatori.

10 F or the stars of the heavens, and their constellations, Cause not their light to shine, Darkened hath been the sun in its going out, And the moon causeth not its light to come forth.

Poiché le stelle e le costellazioni del cielo non faranno più brillare la loro luce; il sole si oscurerà mentre sorge, la luna non farà più risplendere il suo chiarore.

11 A nd I have appointed on the world evil, And on the wicked their iniquity, And have caused to cease the excellency of the proud, And the excellency of the terrible I make low.

Io punirò il mondo per la sua malvagità e gli empi per la loro iniquità; farò cessare l’alterigia dei superbi e abbatterò l’arroganza dei tiranni.

12 I make man more rare than fine gold, And a common man than pure gold of Ophir.

Renderò gli uomini più rari dell’oro fino, più rari dell’oro di Ofir.

13 T herefore the heavens I cause to tremble, And the earth doth shake from its place, In the wrath of Jehovah of Hosts, And in a day of the heat of his anger.

Perciò farò tremare i cieli, e la terra sarà scossa dal suo luogo per l’indignazione del Signore degli eserciti, nel giorno della sua ira furente.

14 A nd it hath been, as a roe driven away, And as a flock that hath no gatherer, Each unto his people -- they turn, And each unto his land -- they flee.

Allora, come gazzella inseguita, o come pecora che nessuno raccoglie, ognuno si volgerà verso il suo popolo, ognuno fuggirà al proprio paese.

15 E very one who is found is thrust through, And every one who is added falleth by sword.

Chiunque sarà trovato sarà trafitto, chiunque sarà preso cadrà di spada.

16 A nd their sucklings are dashed to pieces before their eyes, Spoiled are their houses, and their wives lain with.

I loro bimbi saranno schiacciati davanti ai loro occhi, le loro case saranno saccheggiate, le loro mogli saranno violentate.

17 L o, I am stirring up against them the Medes, Who silver esteem not, And gold -- they delight not in it.

Ecco, io spingo contro di loro i Medi, i quali non fanno alcun caso dell’argento e non prendono alcun piacere nell’oro.

18 A nd bows dash young men to pieces, And the fruit of the womb they pity not, On sons their eye hath no pity.

I loro archi atterreranno i giovani ed essi non avranno pietà del frutto del seno: l’occhio loro non risparmierà i bambini.

19 A nd Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, The glory, the excellency of the Chaldeans, Hath been as overthrown by God, With Sodom and with Gomorrah.

Babilonia, lo splendore dei regni, la superba bellezza dei Caldei, sarà come Sodoma e Gomorra quando Dio le distrusse.

20 S he doth not sit for ever, Nor continueth unto many generations, Nor doth Arab pitch tent there, And shepherds lie not down there.

Essa non sarà mai più abitata, di epoca in epoca nessuno vi si stabilirà più; l’Arabo non vi pianterà più la sua tenda, né i pastori vi faranno più riposare le loro greggi;

21 A nd Ziim have lain down there, And full have been their houses of howlings, And dwelt there have daughters of an ostrich, And goats do skip there.

ma vi riposeranno le bestie del deserto e le sue case saranno piene di gufi; vi faranno dimora gli struzzi, le capre selvatiche vi balleranno.

22 A nd Aiim have responded in his forsaken habitations, And dragons in palaces of delight, And near to come her time, And her days are not drawn out!

Gli sciacalli ululeranno nei suoi palazzi, i cani selvatici nelle sue ville deliziose. Il suo tempo sta per venire, i suoi giorni non saranno prolungati.
