1 A nd it cometh to pass, after days, in the days of wheat-harvest, that Samson looketh after his wife, with a kid of the goats, and saith, `I go in unto my wife, to the inner chamber;' and her father hath not permitted him to go in,

2 a nd her father saith, I certainly said, that thou didst certainly hate her, and I give her to thy companion; is not her sister -- the young one -- better than she? Let her be, I pray thee, to thee, instead of her.'

3 A nd Samson saith of them, `I am more innocent this time than the Philistines, though I am doing with them evil.'

Sansone rispose loro: «Questa volta non avrò colpa, se farò del male ai Filistei».

4 A nd Samson goeth and catcheth three hundred foxes, and taketh torches, and turneth tail unto tail, and putteth a torch between the two tails, in the midst,

Sansone se ne andò e catturò trecento sciacalli; prese pure delle fiaccole, mise gli sciacalli coda contro coda e una fiaccola in mezzo, fra le due code.

5 a nd kindleth fire in the torches, and sendeth out into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burneth from heap even unto standing corn, even unto vineyard -- olive-yard.

Poi accese le fiaccole, fece correre gli sciacalli per i campi di grano dei Filistei e bruciò i covoni ammassati, il grano ancora in piedi e perfino gli uliveti.

6 A nd the Philistines say, `Who hath done this?' And they say, `Samson, son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken away his wife, and giveth her to his companion;' and the Philistines go up, and burn her and her father with fire.

I Filistei chiesero: «Chi ha fatto questo?» Fu risposto: «Sansone, il genero del Timneo, perché questi gli ha preso la moglie e l’ha data al compagno di lui». I Filistei salirono e bruciarono lei e suo padre.

7 A nd Samson saith to them, `Though ye do thus, nevertheless I am avenged on you, and afterwards I cease!'

Sansone disse loro: «Poiché agite in questo modo, siate certi che non mi fermerò finché non mi sarò vendicato di voi».

8 A nd he smiteth them hip and thigh -- a great smiting, and goeth down and dwelleth in the cleft of the rock Etam.

E li sbaragliò interamente, facendone una grande strage. Poi discese e si ritirò nella caverna della roccia di Etam.

9 A nd the Philistines go up, and encamp in Judah, and are spread out in Lehi,

Allora i Filistei salirono, si accamparono in Giuda e si spinsero fino a Lechi.

10 a nd the men of Judah say, `Why have ye come up against us?' and they say, `To bind Samson we have come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.'

Gli uomini di Giuda dissero loro: «Perché siete saliti contro di noi?» Quelli risposero: «Siamo saliti per legare Sansone, per fare a lui quello che ha fatto a noi».

11 A nd three thousand men of Judah go down unto the cleft of the rock Etam, and say to Samson, `Hast thou now known that the Philistines are rulers over us? and what this thou hast done to us?' And he saith to them, `As they did to me, so I did to them.'

Tremila uomini di Giuda scesero alla caverna della roccia di Etam e dissero a Sansone: «Non sai che i Filistei sono nostri dominatori? Che è dunque questo che ci hai fatto?» Egli rispose loro: «Quello che hanno fatto a me, l’ho fatto a loro».

12 A nd they say to him, `To bind thee we have come down -- to give thee into the hand of the Philistines.' And Samson saith to them, `Swear to me, lest ye fall upon me yourselves.'

Essi gli dissero: «Noi siamo venuti per legarti e darti in mano ai Filistei». Sansone replicò loro: «Giuratemi che voi stessi non mi ucciderete».

13 A nd they speak to him, saying, No, but we certainly bind thee, and have given thee into their hand, and we certainly do not put thee to death;' and they bind him with two thick bands, new ones, and bring him up from the rock.

Quelli risposero: «No, ti legheremo soltanto e ti daremo nelle loro mani; ma certamente non ti metteremo a morte». Così lo legarono con due funi nuove e lo fecero uscire dalla caverna.

14 H e hath come unto Lehi -- and the Philistines have shouted at meeting him -- and the Spirit of Jehovah prospereth over him, and the thick bands which on his arms are as flax which they burn with fire, and his bands are wasted from off his hands,

Quando giunse a Lechi, i Filistei gli si fecero incontro con grida di gioia, ma lo Spirito del Signore lo investì; le funi che aveva alle braccia divennero come fili di lino a cui si appicchi il fuoco, e i legami gli caddero dalle mani.

15 a nd he findeth a fresh jaw-bone of an ass, and putteth forth his hand and taketh it, and smiteth with it -- a thousand men.

Poi, trovata una mascella d’asino ancora fresca, stese la mano, l’afferrò e uccise con essa mille uomini.

16 A nd Samson saith, `With a jaw-bone of the ass -- an ass upon asses -- with a jaw-bone of the ass I have smitten a thousand men.'

Sansone disse: «Con una mascella d’asino, un mucchio! due mucchi! Con una mascella d’asino ho ucciso mille uomini».

17 A nd it cometh to pass when he finisheth speaking, that he casteth away the jaw-bone out of his hand, and calleth that place Ramath-Lehi;

Quando ebbe finito di parlare, gettò via la mascella e chiamò quel luogo Ramat-Lechi.

18 a nd he thirsteth exceedingly, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Thou -- Thou hast given by the hand of Thy servant this great salvation; and now, I die with thirst, and have fallen into the hand of the uncircumcised.'

Poi ebbe molta sete, invocò il Signore e disse: «Tu hai concesso questa grande liberazione per mano del tuo servo; ora, dovrò forse morire di sete e cadere nelle mani degli incirconcisi?»

19 A nd God cleaveth the hollow place which in Lehi, and waters come out of it, and he drinketh, and his spirit cometh back, and he reviveth; therefore hath called its name `The fountain of him who is calling,' which in Lehi unto this day.

Allora Dio fendè la roccia concava che è a Lechi e ne uscì dell’acqua. Sansone bevve, il suo spirito si rianimò ed egli riprese vita. Perciò quella fonte fu chiamata En-Accore; essa esiste anche al giorno d’oggi a Lechi.

20 A nd he judgeth Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

Sansone fu giudice d’Israele, al tempo dei Filistei, per vent’anni.
