1 A nd the Philistines have taken the ark of God, and bring it in from Eben-Ezer to Ashdod,

2 a nd the Philistines take the ark of God and bring it into the house of Dagon, and set it near Dagon.

3 A nd the Ashdodites rise early on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah; and they take Dagon, and put it back to its place.

E il giorno dopo gli Asdodei, alzatisi di buon’ora, trovarono Dagon caduto con la faccia a terra, davanti all’arca del Signore. Presero Dagon e lo rimisero al suo posto.

4 A nd they rise early in the morning on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah, and the head of Dagon, and the two palms of its hands are cut off at the threshold, only the fishy part hath been left to him;

Il giorno dopo, alzatisi di buon’ora, trovarono che Dagon era di nuovo caduto con la faccia a terra, davanti all’arca del Signore; la testa e le due mani di Dagon erano mozzate sulla soglia, e non gli restava più che il tronco.

5 t herefore the priests of Dagon, and all those coming into the house of Dagon, tread not on the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, till this day.

Perciò, fino al giorno d’oggi, i sacerdoti di Dagon e tutti quelli che entrano nella casa di Dagon a Asdod non mettono il piede sulla soglia.

6 A nd the hand of Jehovah is heavy on the Ashdodites, and He maketh them desolate, and smiteth them with emerods, Ashdod and its borders.

Poi la mano del Signore si aggravò sugli abitanti di Asdod, portò in mezzo a loro la distruzione e li colpì di emorroidi, a Asdod e nel suo territorio.

7 A nd the men of Ashdod see that so, and have said, `The ark of the God of Israel doth not abide with us, for hard hath been His hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.'

Quando gli abitanti di Asdod videro in che modo si mettevano le cose, dissero: «L’arca del Dio d’Israele non rimarrà in mezzo a noi, poiché la mano del Signore è pesante su di noi e su Dagon, nostro dio».

8 A nd they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines unto them, and say, `What do we do to the ark of the God of Israel?' and they say, `To Gath let the ark of the God of Israel be brought round;' and they bring round the ark of the God of Israel;

Mandarono quindi a convocare presso di loro tutti i prìncipi dei Filistei e dissero: «Che faremo dell’arca del Dio d’Israele?» I prìncipi risposero: «Si trasporti l’arca del Dio d’Israele a Gat».

9 a nd it cometh to pass after they have brought it round, that the hand of Jehovah is against the city -- a very great destruction; and He smiteth the men of the city, from small even unto great; and break forth on them do emerods.

Così trasportarono a Gat l’arca del Dio d’Israele. E quando l’ebbero trasportata, la mano del Signore fu contro la città, che si fece prendere da un grande panico. Il Signore colpì gli uomini della città, piccoli e grandi, e un flagello d’emorroidi scoppiò in mezzo a loro.

10 A nd they send the ark of God to Ekron, and it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of God to Ekron, that the Ekronites cry out, saying, `They have brought round unto us the ark of the God of Israel, to put us to death -- and our people.'

Allora mandarono l’arca di Dio a Ecron. E come l’arca di Dio giunse a Ecron, gli abitanti di Ecron cominciarono a gridare, e dissero: «Hanno trasportato l’arca del Dio d’Israele da noi, per far morire noi e il nostro popolo!»

11 A nd they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines, and say, `Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and it turneth back to its place, and it doth not put us to death -- and our people;' for there hath been a deadly destruction throughout all the city, very heavy hath the hand of God been there,

Mandarono quindi a convocare tutti i prìncipi dei Filistei e dissero: «Rimandate l’arca del Dio d’Israele; torni essa al suo posto e non faccia morire noi e il nostro popolo!» Infatti tutta la città era in preda a un terrore di morte, e la mano di Dio si faceva pesante su di essa.

12 a nd the men who have not died have been smitten with emerods, and the cry of the city goeth up into the heavens.

Quelli che non morivano erano colpiti da emorroidi e le grida della città salivano fino al cielo.
