1 H ear, I pray you, that which Jehovah is saying: `Rise -- strive thou with the mountains, And cause thou the hills to hear thy voice.'

Ascoltate quindi ciò che dice il Signore: «Àlzati, contendi con le montagne, i colli odano la tua voce!

2 H ear, O mountains, the strife of Jehovah, Ye strong ones -- foundations of earth! For a strife to Jehovah, with His people, And with Israel He doth reason.

Ascoltate, o monti, la causa del Signore! Anche voi, salde fondamenta della terra! Poiché il Signore contende con il suo popolo e vuole discutere con Israele.

3 O My people, what have I done to thee? And what -- have I wearied thee? Testify against Me.

Popolo mio, che ti ho fatto? In che cosa ti ho stancato? Testimonia pure contro di me!

4 F or I brought thee up from the land of Egypt, And from the house of servants I have ransomed thee, And I send before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

Sono io infatti che ti ho condotto fuori dal paese d’Egitto, ti ho liberato dalla casa di schiavitù, ho mandato davanti a te Mosè, Aaronne e Miriam.

5 O My people, remember, I pray you, What counsel did Balak king of Moab, What answer him did Balaam son of Beor, (From Shittim unto Gilgal,) In order to know the righteous acts of Jehovah.'

Ricorda dunque, popolo mio, quel che tramava Balac, re di Moab, e che cosa gli rispose Balaam, figlio di Beor, da Sittim a Ghilgal, affinché tu riconosca la giustizia del Signore ».

6 W ith what do I come before Jehovah? Do I bow to God Most High? Do I come before Him with burnt-offerings? With calves -- sons of a year?

Con che cosa verrò in presenza del Signore e mi inchinerò davanti al Dio eccelso? Verrò in sua presenza con olocausti, con vitelli di un anno?

7 I s Jehovah pleased with thousands of rams? With myriads of streams of oil? Do I give my first-born my transgression? The fruit of my body the sin of my soul?

Gradirà il Signore le migliaia di montoni, le miriadi di fiumi d’olio? Dovrò offrire il mio primogenito per la mia trasgressione, il frutto delle mie viscere per il mio peccato?

8 H e hath declared to thee, O man, what good; Yea, what is Jehovah requiring of thee, Except -- to do judgment, and love kindness, And lowly to walk with thy God?

O uomo, egli ti ha fatto conoscere ciò che è bene; che altro richiede da te il Signore, se non che tu pratichi la giustizia, che tu ami la misericordia e cammini umilmente con il tuo Dio?

9 A voice of Jehovah to the city calleth, And wisdom doth fear Thy name, Hear ye the rod, and Him who appointed it.

La voce del Signore grida alla città, chi ha senno teme il tuo nome. «Ascoltate la minaccia del castigo e colui che lo manda!

10 A re there yet the house of the wicked Treasures of wickedness, And the abhorred scanty ephah?

Ci sono ancora, nella casa dell’empio, tesori illecitamente acquistati e l’efa scarso, che è cosa abominevole?

11 D o I reckon pure with balances of wickedness? And with a bag of deceitful stones?

Sarei io puro se tollerassi bilance false e il sacchetto dei pesi falsi?

12 W hose rich ones have been full of violence, And its inhabitants have spoken falsehood, And their tongue deceitful in their mouth.

I ricchi della città sono pieni di violenza, i suoi abitanti affermano il falso e la loro lingua non è che inganno nella loro bocca.

13 A nd I also, I have begun to smite thee, To make desolate, because of thy sins.

Perciò anch’io ti colpirò, ti produrrò gravi ferite e ti devasterò a causa dei tuoi peccati.

14 T hou -- thou eatest, and thou art not satisfied, And thy pit in thy midst, And thou removest, and dost not deliver, And that which thou deliverest, to a sword I give.

Tu mangerai, ma senza saziarti, e la fame ti rimarrà dentro; porterai via, ma non salverai, e ciò che avrai salvato lo darò in balìa della spada.

15 T hou -- thou sowest, and thou dost not reap, Thou -- thou treadest the olive, And thou pourest not out oil, And new wine -- and thou drinkest not wine.

Tu seminerai, ma non mieterai; spremerai le olive, ma non ti ungerai con l’olio; farai colare il mosto, ma non berrai il vino.

16 A nd kept habitually are the statutes of Omri, And all the work of the house of Ahab, And ye do walk in their counsels, For My giving thee for a desolation, And its inhabitants for a hissing, And the reproach of My people ye do bear!

Si osservano con cura gli statuti di Omri e tutte le pratiche della casa di Acab; tu cammini seguendo i loro consigli, perché io abbandoni te alla desolazione e i tuoi abitanti allo scherno! Tu porterai l’infamia del mio popolo!»
