1 T hen Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples,

Allora Gesù parlò alla folla e ai suoi discepoli,

2 s aying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;

dicendo: «Gli scribi e i farisei siedono sulla cattedra di Mosè.

3 a ll, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;

Fate dunque e osservate tutte le cose che vi diranno, ma non fate secondo le loro opere; perché dicono e non fanno.

4 f or they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.

Infatti legano dei fardelli pesanti {e difficili da portare} e li mettono sulle spalle della gente; ma loro non li vogliono muovere neppure con un dito.

5 ` And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,

Tutte le loro opere le fanno per essere osservati dagli uomini; infatti allargano le loro filatterie e allungano le frange;

6 t hey love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

amano i primi posti nei conviti, i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe,

7 a nd the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

i saluti nelle piazze ed essere chiamati dalla gente: “Rabbì!”

8 ` And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;

Ma voi non vi fate chiamare “Rabbì”; perché uno solo è il vostro Maestro e voi siete tutti fratelli.

9 a nd ye may not call your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,

Non chiamate nessuno sulla terra vostro padre, perché uno solo è il Padre vostro, quello che è nei cieli.

10 n or may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.

Non vi fate chiamare guide, perché una sola è la vostra guida, il Cristo;

11 A nd the greater of you shall be your ministrant,

ma il maggiore tra di voi sia vostro servitore.

12 a nd whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Chiunque si innalzerà sarà abbassato e chiunque si abbasserà sarà innalzato».

13 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.

«Ma guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché serrate il regno dei cieli davanti alla gente; poiché non vi entrate voi, né lasciate entrare quelli che cercano di entrare.

14 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.

15 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.

Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché viaggiate per mare e per terra per fare un proselito; e quando lo avete fatto, lo rendete figlio della geenna il doppio di voi.

16 ` Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!

Guai a voi, guide cieche, che dite: “Se uno giura per il tempio, non importa; ma se giura per l’oro del tempio, resta obbligato”.

17 F ools and blind! for which greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?

Stolti e ciechi! Che cosa è più grande: l’oro o il tempio che santifica l’oro?

18 ` And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!

E se uno, voi dite, giura per l’altare, non importa; ma se giura per l’offerta che c’è sopra, resta obbligato.

19 F ools and blind! for which greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?

ciechi! Che cosa è più grande: l’offerta o l’altare che santifica l’offerta?

20 ` He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;

Chi dunque giura per l’altare, giura per esso e per tutto quello che c’è sopra;

21 a nd he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;

e chi giura per il tempio, giura per esso e per Colui che lo abita;

22 a nd he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.

e chi giura per il cielo, giura per il trono di Dio e per Colui che vi siede sopra.

23 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved to do, and those not to neglect.

Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché pagate la decima della menta, dell’aneto e del comino e trascurate le cose più importanti della legge: il giudizio, la misericordia e la fede. Queste sono le cose che bisognava fare, senza tralasciare le altre.

24 ` Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.

Guide cieche, che filtrate il moscerino e inghiottite il cammello!

25 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.

Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché pulite l’esterno del bicchiere e del piatto, mentre dentro sono pieni di rapina e d’intemperanza.

26 ` Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.

Fariseo cieco, pulisci prima l’interno del bicchiere, affinché anche l’esterno diventi pulito.

27 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;

Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché siete simili a sepolcri imbiancati, che appaiono belli di fuori, ma dentro sono pieni d’ossa di morti e d’ogni immondizia.

28 s o also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Così anche voi, di fuori sembrate giusti alla gente, ma dentro siete pieni d’ipocrisia e d’iniquità.

29 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,

Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, perché costruite i sepolcri ai profeti e adornate le tombe dei giusti

30 a nd say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

e dite: “Se fossimo vissuti ai tempi dei nostri padri, non saremmo stati loro complici nello spargere il sangue dei profeti!”

31 S o that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;

In tal modo voi testimoniate contro voi stessi, di essere figli di coloro che uccisero i profeti.

32 a nd ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.

E colmate pure la misura dei vostri padri!

33 ` Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

Serpenti, razza di vipere, come scamperete al giudizio della geenna?

34 ` Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;

Perciò ecco, io vi mando dei profeti, dei saggi e degli scribi; di questi, alcuni ne ucciderete e metterete in croce; altri ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe e li perseguiterete di città in città,

35 t hat on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:

affinché ricada su di voi tutto il sangue giusto sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele, fino al sangue di Zaccaria, figlio di Berechia, che voi uccideste fra il tempio e l’altare.

36 v erily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.

Io vi dico in verità che tutto ciò ricadrà su questa generazione. Il lamento di Gesù su Gerusalemme

37 ` Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.

«Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi quelli che ti sono mandati, quante volte ho voluto raccogliere i tuoi figli, come la chioccia raccoglie i suoi pulcini sotto le ali; e voi non avete voluto!

38 L o, left desolate to you is your house;

Ecco, la vostra casa sta per esservi lasciata deserta.

39 f or I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'

Infatti vi dico che da ora in avanti non mi vedrete più, finché non direte: “Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!” ».
