1 A nd Job answereth and saith: --

Allora Giobbe rispose e disse:

2 A lso -- to-day my complaint bitter, My hand hath been heavy because of my sighing.

«Anche oggi il mio lamento è una rivolta, per quanto io cerchi di contenere il mio gemito.

3 O that I had known -- and I find Him, I come in unto His seat,

Oh, sapessi dove trovarlo! Potessi arrivare fino al suo trono!

4 I arrange before Him the cause, And my mouth fill arguments.

Esporrei la mia causa davanti a lui, riempirei d’argomenti la mia bocca.

5 I know the words He doth answer me, And understand what He saith to me.

Saprei quel che mi risponderebbe, capirei quello che avrebbe da dirmi.

6 I n the abundance of power doth He strive with me? No! surely He putteth in me.

Impiegherebbe tutta la sua forza per combattermi? No, egli mi ascolterebbe!

7 T here the upright doth reason with Him, And I escape for ever from my judge.

Là troverebbe un uomo retto a discutere con lui, e sarei dal mio giudice assolto per sempre.

8 L o, forward I go -- and He is not, And backward -- and I perceive him not.

Ma ecco, se vado a oriente, egli non c’è; se a occidente, non lo trovo;

9 t he left in His working -- and I see not, He is covered the right, and I behold not.

se a settentrione, quando vi opera, io non lo vedo; si nasconde egli a sud, io non lo scorgo.

10 F or He hath known the way with me, He hath tried me -- as gold I go forth.

Ma la via che io batto egli la conosce; se mi mettesse alla prova, ne uscirei come l’oro.

11 O n His step hath my foot laid hold, His way I have kept, and turn not aside,

Il mio piede ha seguito fedelmente le sue orme, mi sono tenuto sulla sua via senza deviare;

12 T he command of His lips, and I depart not. Above my allotted portion I have laid up The sayings of His mouth.

non mi sono scostato dai comandamenti delle sue labbra, ho custodito nel mio cuore le parole della sua bocca.

13 A nd He in one, And who doth turn Him back? And His soul hath desired -- and He doth.

Ma la sua decisione è una; chi lo farà mutare? Quello che desidera, lo fa;

14 F or He doth complete my portion, And many such things with Him.

egli eseguirà quel che di me ha decretato; di cose come queste ne ha molte in mente.

15 T herefore, from His presence I am troubled, I consider, and am afraid of Him.

Perciò davanti a lui io sono atterrito; quando ci penso, ho paura di lui.

16 A nd God hath made my heart soft, And the Mighty hath troubled me.

Dio mi ha tolto il coraggio, l’Onnipotente mi ha spaventato.

17 F or I have not been cut off before darkness, And before me He covered thick darkness.

Questo mi annienta; non le tenebre, non la fitta oscurità che mi ricopre.
