1 A nd Jacob lifteth up his feet, and goeth towards the land of the sons of the east;

Poi Giacobbe si mise in cammino e andò nel paese degli Orientali.

2 a nd he looketh, and lo, a well in the field, and lo, there three droves of a flock crouching by it, for from that well they water the droves, and the great stone on the mouth of the well.

Egli vide nei campi un pozzo e tre greggi di pecore, accovacciate lì vicino; a quel pozzo infatti si abbeveravano le greggi; ma la pietra sulla bocca del pozzo era grande.

3 ( When thither have all the droves been gathered, and they have rolled the stone from off the mouth of the well, and have watered the flock, then they have turned back the stone on the mouth of the well to its place.)

Dopo che tutte le greggi si erano radunate là, i pastori rotolavano la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo, abbeveravano le pecore, poi rimettevano la pietra al suo posto, sulla bocca del pozzo.

4 A nd Jacob saith to them, `My brethren, from whence ye?' and they say, `We from Haran.'

Giacobbe disse ai pastori: «Fratelli miei, di dove siete?» Quelli risposero: «Siamo di Caran».

5 A nd he saith to them, `Have ye known Laban, son of Nahor?' and they say, `We have known.'

Egli disse loro: «Conoscete Labano, figlio di Naor?» Ed essi: «Lo conosciamo».

6 A nd he saith to them, `Hath he peace?' and they say, `Peace; and lo, Rachel his daughter is coming with the flock.'

Egli disse loro: «Sta bene?» Quelli risposero: «Sta bene; ecco Rachele, sua figlia, che viene con le pecore».

7 A nd he saith, `Lo, the day still great, not time for the cattle to be gathered; water ye the flock, and go, delight yourselves.'

Egli disse: «Ecco, è ancora pieno giorno, e non è tempo di radunare il bestiame; abbeverate le pecore e portatele al pascolo».

8 A nd they say, `We are not able, till that all the droves be gathered together, and they have rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well, and we have watered the flock.'

Quelli risposero: «Non possiamo, finché non siano radunate tutte le greggi; allora si rotola la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeveriamo le pecore».

9 H e is yet speaking with them, and Rachel hath come with the flock which her father hath, for she shepherdess;

Mentre egli parlava ancora con loro, giunse Rachele con le pecore di suo padre; perché era lei che le portava al pascolo.

10 a nd it cometh to pass when Jacob hath seen Rachel, daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the flock of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob cometh nigh and rolleth the stone from off the mouth of the well, and watereth the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

Quando Giacobbe vide Rachele figlia di Labano, fratello di sua madre, e le pecore di Labano, fratello di sua madre, si avvicinò, rotolò la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeverò il gregge di Labano, fratello di sua madre.

11 A nd Jacob kisseth Rachel, and lifteth up his voice, and weepeth,

Poi Giacobbe baciò Rachele, alzò la voce e pianse.

12 a nd Jacob declareth to Rachel that he her father's brother, and that he Rebekah's son, and she runneth and declareth to her father.

Giacobbe fece sapere a Rachele che egli era parente del padre di lei e che era figlio di Rebecca. Ed ella corse a dirlo a suo padre.

13 A nd it cometh to pass, when Laban heareth the report of Jacob his sister's son, that he runneth to meet him, and embraceth him, and kisseth him, and bringeth him in unto his house; and he recounteth to Laban all these things,

Appena Labano ebbe udito le notizie di Giacobbe figlio di sua sorella, gli corse incontro, l’abbracciò, lo baciò e lo condusse a casa sua. Giacobbe raccontò a Labano tutte queste cose;

14 a nd Laban saith to him, `Only my bone and my flesh thou;' and he dwelleth with him a month of days.

e Labano gli disse: «Tu sei proprio mie ossa e mia carne!» Così abitò presso di lui per un mese. Lea e Rachele

15 A nd Laban saith to Jacob, `Is it because thou my brother that thou hast served me for nought? declare to me what thy hire.'

Poi Labano disse a Giacobbe: «Perché sei mio parente devi forse servirmi per nulla? Dimmi quale dev’essere il tuo salario».

16 A nd Laban hath two daughters, the name of the elder Leah, and the name of the younger Rachel,

Or Labano aveva due figlie: la maggiore si chiamava Lea e la minore Rachele.

17 a nd the eyes of Leah tender, and Rachel hath been fair of form and fair of appearance.

Lea aveva gli occhi delicati, ma Rachele era avvenente e di bell’aspetto.

18 A nd Jacob loveth Rachel, and saith, `I serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter:'

Giacobbe amava Rachele e disse a Labano: «Io ti servirò sette anni, per Rachele tua figlia minore».

19 a nd Laban saith, `It is better for me to give her to thee than to give her to another man; dwell with me;'

Labano rispose: «È meglio che io la dia a te piuttosto che a un altro uomo; resta con me».

20 a nd Jacob serveth for Rachel seven years; and they are in his eyes as some days, because of his loving her.

Giacobbe servì sette anni per Rachele; e gli parvero pochi giorni, a causa del suo amore per lei.

21 A nd Jacob saith unto Laban, `Give up my wife, for my days have been fulfilled, and I go in unto her;'

Poi Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Dammi mia moglie, perché il mio tempo è compiuto, e io andrò da lei».

22 a nd Laban gathereth all the men of the place, and maketh a banquet.

Allora Labano radunò tutta la gente del luogo e fece un banchetto.

23 A nd it cometh to pass in the evening, that he taketh Leah, his daughter, and bringeth her in unto him, and he goeth in unto her;

Ma, la sera, prese sua figlia Lea e la condusse da Giacobbe, il quale si unì a lei.

24 a nd Laban giveth to her Zilpah, his maid-servant, to Leah his daughter, a maid-servant.

Labano diede la sua serva Zilpa per serva a Lea, sua figlia.

25 A nd it cometh to pass in the morning, that lo, it Leah; and he saith unto Laban, `What this thou hast done to me? for Rachel have I not served with thee? and why hast thou deceived me?'

L’indomani mattina ecco che era Lea! Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Che mi hai fatto? Non è per Rachele che ti ho servito? Perché mi hai ingannato?»

26 A nd Laban saith, `It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the first-born;

Labano rispose: «Non è usanza da noi dare la minore prima della maggiore. Finisci la settimana nuziale con questa

27 f ulfil the week of this one, and we give to thee also this one, for the service which thou dost serve with me yet seven other years.'

e ti daremo anche l’altra, per il servizio che presterai da me per altri sette anni».

28 A nd Jacob doth so, and fulfilleth the week of this one, and he giveth to him Rachel his daughter, to him for a wife;

Giacobbe fece così, e finì la settimana di quello sposalizio; poi Labano gli diede in moglie sua figlia Rachele.

29 a nd Laban giveth to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his maid-servant, for a maid-servant to her.

Labano diede la sua serva Bila per serva a Rachele, sua figlia.

30 A nd he goeth in also unto Rachel, and he also loveth Rachel more than Leah; and he serveth with him yet seven other years.

Giacobbe si unì pure a Rachele e amò Rachele più di Lea, e servì Labano per altri sette anni. I figli di Giacobbe

31 A nd Jehovah seeth that Leah the hated one, and He openeth her womb, and Rachel barren;

Il Signore, vedendo che Lea era odiata, la rese feconda; ma Rachele era sterile.

32 a nd Leah conceiveth, and beareth a son, and calleth his name Reuben, for she said, `Because Jehovah hath looked on mine affliction; because now doth my husband love me.'

Lea concepì, partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Ruben, perché disse: «Il Signore ha visto la mia afflizione; ora mio marito mi amerà».

33 A nd she conceiveth again, and beareth a son, and saith, `Because Jehovah hath heard that I the hated one, He also giveth to me even this;' and she calleth his name Simeon.

Poi concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, e disse: «Il Signore ha udito che io ero odiata, e mi ha dato anche questo figlio». E lo chiamò Simeone.

34 A nd she conceiveth again, and beareth a son, and saith, `Now the time, my husband is joined unto me, because I have born to him three sons,' therefore hath called his name Levi.

Concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, e disse: «Questa volta mio marito sarà ben unito a me, perché gli ho partorito tre figli». Per questo fu chiamato Levi.

35 A nd she conceiveth again, and beareth a son, and saith this time, `I praise Jehovah;' therefore hath she called his name Judah; and she ceaseth from bearing.

E concepì di nuovo, partorì un figlio e disse: «Questa volta celebrerò il Signore ». Perciò lo chiamò Giuda. Poi cessò d’aver figli.
