1 A nd all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

Tutto il popolo si radunò come un sol uomo sulla piazza che è davanti alla porta delle Acque, e disse a Esdra, lo scriba, che portasse il libro della legge di Mosè che il Signore aveva data a Israele.

2 A nd Ezra the priest bringeth the law before the assembly, both of men and women, and every one intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

Il primo giorno del settimo mese, il sacerdote Esdra portò la legge davanti all’assemblea, composta di uomini, di donne e di tutti quelli che erano in grado di capire.

3 a nd he readeth in it before the broad place that before the water-gate, from the light till the middle of the day, over-against the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people unto the book of the law.

Egli lesse il libro sulla piazza che è davanti alla porta delle Acque, dalla mattina presto fino a mezzogiorno, in presenza degli uomini, delle donne e di quelli che erano in grado di capire; e tutto il popolo tendeva l’orecchio per sentire il libro della legge.

4 A nd Ezra the scribe standeth on a tower of wood that they made for the purpose, and Mattithiah standeth near him, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right; and on his left Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

Esdra, lo scriba, stava sopra un palco di legno, che era stato fatto apposta; accanto a lui stavano, a destra, Mattitia, Sema, Anania, Uria, Chilchia e Maaseia; a sinistra, Pedaia, Misael, Malchia, Casum, Casbaddana, Zaccaria e Mesullam.

5 A nd Ezra openeth the book before the eyes of all the people -- for above all the people he hath been -- and at his opening all the people have stood up,

Esdra aprì il libro in presenza di tutto il popolo, poiché stava nel posto più elevato; e, appena aperto il libro, tutto il popolo si alzò in piedi.

6 a nd Ezra blesseth Jehovah, the great God, and all the people answer, `Amen, Amen,' with lifting up of their hands, and they bow and do obeisance to Jehovah -- faces to the earth.

Esdra benedisse il Signore, Dio grande, e tutto il popolo rispose: «Amen, amen», alzando le mani; e s’inchinarono e si prostrarono con la faccia a terra davanti al Signore.

7 A nd Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, giving the people understanding in the law, and the people, on their station,

Iesua, Bani, Serebia, Iamin, Accub, Sabbetai, Odia, Maaseia, Chelita, Azaria, Iozabad, Anan, Pelaia e gli altri Leviti spiegavano la legge al popolo, e tutti stavano in piedi al loro posto.

8 a nd they read in the book, in the law of God, explaining -- so as to give the meaning, and they give understanding to the convocation.

Essi leggevano nel libro della legge di Dio in modo comprensibile; ne davano il senso, per far capire al popolo quello che leggevano. Celebrazione della festa delle Capanne

9 A nd Nehemiah -- he the Tirshatha -- saith (and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who are instructing the people) to all the people, `To-day is holy to Jehovah your God, do not mourn, nor weep:' for all the people are weeping at their hearing the words of the law.

Neemia, che era il governatore, Esdra, sacerdote e scriba, e i Leviti, che insegnavano, dissero a tutto il popolo: «Questo giorno è consacrato al Signore vostro Dio; non siate tristi e non piangete!» Tutto il popolo infatti piangeva, ascoltando le parole della legge.

10 A nd he saith to them, `Go, eat fat things, and drink sweet things, and sent portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for to-day holy to our Lord, and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.'

Poi Neemia disse loro: «Andate, mangiate cibi grassi e bevete bevande dolci, e mandate delle porzioni a quelli che non hanno preparato nulla per loro; perché questo giorno è consacrato al nostro Signore; non siate tristi; perché la gioia del Signore è la vostra forza».

11 A nd the Levites are keeping all the people silent, saying, `Be silent, for to-day holy, and be not grieved.'

I Leviti calmavano tutto il popolo, dicendo: «Tacete, perché questo giorno è santo; non siate tristi!»

12 A nd all the people go to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great joy, because they have understood concerning the words that they made known to them.

Tutto il popolo se ne andò a mangiare, a bere, a mandare porzioni ai poveri e a fare gran festa, perché avevano capito le parole che erano state loro spiegate.

13 A nd on the second day have been gathered heads of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to act wisely concerning the words of the law.

Il secondo giorno i capi famiglia di tutto il popolo, i sacerdoti e i Leviti si radunarono presso Esdra, lo scriba, per esaminare le parole della legge.

14 A nd they find written in the law that Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel dwell in booths in the feast, in the seventh month,

Trovarono scritto nella legge, che il Signore aveva data per mezzo di Mosè, che i figli d’Israele dovevano abitare in capanne durante la festa del settimo mese,

15 a nd that they proclaim and cause to pass over all their cities, (and in Jerusalem,) saying, `Go ye out to the mount, and bring leaves of the olive, and leaves of the oil tree, and leaves of the myrtle, and leaves of the palms, and leaves of thick trees, to make booths as it is written.'

e che in tutte le loro città e in Gerusalemme si doveva pubblicare questo bando: «Andate al monte a cercare rami d’olivo, rami d’olivastro, di mirto, di palma e di alberi ombrosi, per fare delle capanne, come sta scritto».

16 A nd the people go out, and bring in, and make for themselves booths, each on his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water-gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

Allora il popolo andò fuori, portò i rami, e ciascuno fece la sua capanna sul tetto della propria casa, nel proprio cortile, nei cortili della casa di Dio, sulla piazza davanti alla porta delle Acque e sulla piazza davanti alla porta di Efraim.

17 A nd they make -- all the assembly of the captives of the captivity -- booths, and they sit in booths; for the sons of Israel had not done, from the days of Jeshua son of Nun, so unto that day, and there is very great joy.

Così tutta l’assemblea di quanti erano tornati dall’esilio si fece delle capanne e abitò nelle capanne. Dal tempo di Giosuè, figlio di Nun, fino a quel giorno, i figli d’Israele non avevano più fatto così. E ci fu grandissima gioia.

18 A nd he readeth in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day till the last day, and they make a feast seven days, and on the eighth day a restraint, according to the ordinance.

Fu letto un brano della legge di Dio ogni giorno, dal primo all’ultimo; la festa durò sette giorni, e l’ottavo si tenne una solenne assemblea, com’è prescritto.
