1 A nd all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

Todo el pueblo se reunió como un solo hombre en la plaza que estaba delante de la Puerta de las Aguas, y pidieron al escriba Esdras que trajera el Libro de la Ley de Moisés que el Señor había dado a Israel.

2 A nd Ezra the priest bringeth the law before the assembly, both of men and women, and every one intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

Entonces el sacerdote Esdras trajo la ley delante de la asamblea de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían entender lo que oían. Era el primer día del mes séptimo.

3 a nd he readeth in it before the broad place that before the water-gate, from the light till the middle of the day, over-against the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people unto the book of the law.

Y leyó en el libro frente a la plaza que estaba delante de la Puerta de las Aguas, desde el amanecer hasta el mediodía, en presencia de hombres y mujeres y de los que podían entender; y los oídos de todo el pueblo estaban atentos al Libro de la Ley.

4 A nd Ezra the scribe standeth on a tower of wood that they made for the purpose, and Mattithiah standeth near him, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right; and on his left Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

El escriba Esdras estaba sobre un estrado de madera que habían hecho para esta ocasión. Junto a él, a su derecha, estaban Matatías, Sema, Anías, Urías, Hilcías y Maasías; y a su izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulam.

5 A nd Ezra openeth the book before the eyes of all the people -- for above all the people he hath been -- and at his opening all the people have stood up,

Esdras abrió el libro a la vista de todo el pueblo, pues él estaba en un lugar más alto que todo el pueblo; y cuando lo abrió, todo el pueblo se puso en pie.

6 a nd Ezra blesseth Jehovah, the great God, and all the people answer, `Amen, Amen,' with lifting up of their hands, and they bow and do obeisance to Jehovah -- faces to the earth.

Entonces Esdras bendijo al Señor, el gran Dios. Y todo el pueblo respondió: “¡Amén, Amén!,” mientras alzaban las manos. Después se postraron y adoraron al Señor rostro en tierra.

7 A nd Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, giving the people understanding in the law, and the people, on their station,

También Jesúa, Bani, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetai, Hodías, Maasías, Kelita, Azarías, Jozabed, Hanán, Pelaías, y los Levitas, explicaban la ley al pueblo mientras el pueblo permanecía en su lugar.

8 a nd they read in the book, in the law of God, explaining -- so as to give the meaning, and they give understanding to the convocation.

Y leyeron en el Libro de la Ley de Dios, interpretándolo y dándo le el sentido para que entendieran la lectura.

9 A nd Nehemiah -- he the Tirshatha -- saith (and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who are instructing the people) to all the people, `To-day is holy to Jehovah your God, do not mourn, nor weep:' for all the people are weeping at their hearing the words of the law.

Entonces Nehemías, que era el gobernador, y Esdras, el sacerdote y escriba, y los Levitas que enseñaban al pueblo, dijeron a todo el pueblo: “Este día es santo para el Señor su Dios; no se entristezcan, ni lloren.” Porque todo el pueblo lloraba al oír las palabras de la ley.

10 A nd he saith to them, `Go, eat fat things, and drink sweet things, and sent portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for to-day holy to our Lord, and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.'

También les dijo: “Vayan, coman de la grasa, beban de lo dulce, y manden raciones a los que no tienen nada preparado; porque este día es santo para nuestro Señor. No se entristezcan, porque la alegría del Señor es la fortaleza de ustedes.”

11 A nd the Levites are keeping all the people silent, saying, `Be silent, for to-day holy, and be not grieved.'

Los Levitas calmaron a todo el pueblo diciéndole: “Callen, porque el día es santo, no se entristezcan.”

12 A nd all the people go to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great joy, because they have understood concerning the words that they made known to them.

Entonces todo el pueblo se fue a comer, a beber, a mandar porciones y a celebrar una gran fiesta, porque comprendieron las palabras que les habían enseñado.

13 A nd on the second day have been gathered heads of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to act wisely concerning the words of the law.

Al segundo día los jefes de casas paternas de todo el pueblo, los sacerdotes y los Levitas se reunieron junto al escriba Esdras para entender las palabras de la ley.

14 A nd they find written in the law that Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel dwell in booths in the feast, in the seventh month,

Y encontraron escrito en la ley que el Señor había mandado por medio de Moisés que los Israelitas habitaran en tabernáculos (tiendas) durante la fiesta del mes séptimo.

15 a nd that they proclaim and cause to pass over all their cities, (and in Jerusalem,) saying, `Go ye out to the mount, and bring leaves of the olive, and leaves of the oil tree, and leaves of the myrtle, and leaves of the palms, and leaves of thick trees, to make booths as it is written.'

Así que ellos dieron a conocer esta proclama en todas sus ciudades y en Jerusalén: “Salgan al monte y traigan ramas de olivo, ramas de olivo silvestre, ramas de mirto, ramas de palmera y ramas de otros árboles frondosos, para hacer tabernáculos, como está escrito.”

16 A nd the people go out, and bring in, and make for themselves booths, each on his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water-gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

El pueblo salió y trajeron las ramas y se hicieron tabernáculos, cada uno en su terrado, en sus patios, en los patios de la casa de Dios, en la plaza de la Puerta de las Aguas y en la plaza de la Puerta de Efraín.

17 A nd they make -- all the assembly of the captives of the captivity -- booths, and they sit in booths; for the sons of Israel had not done, from the days of Jeshua son of Nun, so unto that day, and there is very great joy.

Toda la asamblea de los que habían regresado de la cautividad hicieron tabernáculos y habitaron en ellos. Los Israelitas ciertamente no habían hecho de esta manera desde los días de Josué, hijo de Nun, hasta aquel día. Y hubo gran regocijo.

18 A nd he readeth in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day till the last day, and they make a feast seven days, and on the eighth day a restraint, according to the ordinance.

Esdras leyó del Libro de la Ley de Dios cada día, desde el primer día hasta el último día. Celebraron la fiesta siete días, y al octavo día hubo una asamblea solemne según lo establecido.
