1 A nd David fleeth from Naioth in Ramah, and cometh, and saith before Jonathan, `What have I done? what mine iniquity? and what my sin before thy father, that he is seeking my life?'

Entonces David huyó de Naiot en Ramá, vino ante Jonatán, y le dijo: “¿Qué he hecho yo? ¿Cuál es mi maldad y cuál es mi pecado contra tu padre para que busque mi vida?”

2 A nd he saith to him, `Far be it! thou dost not die; lo, my father doth not do anything great or small and doth not uncover mine ear; and wherefore doth my father hide from me this thing? this is not.'

Y él le respondió: “De ninguna manera; no morirás. Mi padre no hace ninguna cosa, grande o pequeña, sin revelármela. ¿Por qué, pues, me ha de ocultar esto mi padre? No será así.”

3 A nd David sweareth again, and saith, `Thy father hath certainly known that I have found grace in thine eyes, and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved; and yet, Jehovah liveth, and thy soul liveth, but -- as a step between me and death.'

Pero David volvió a jurar y dijo: “Tu padre sabe bien que he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, y ha dicho: ‘Que no lo sepa Jonatán para que no se entristezca.’ Pero ciertamente, vive el Señor y vive tu alma, que apenas hay un paso entre mí y la muerte.”

4 A nd Jonathan saith to David, `What doth thy soul say? -- and I do it for thee.'

“Lo que tú digas, haré por ti,” dijo Jonatán a David.

5 A nd David saith unto Jonathan, `Lo, the new moon to-morrow; and I do certainly sit with the king to eat; and thou hast sent me away, and I have been hidden in a field till the third evening;

Y David respondió a Jonatán: “Mira, mañana es luna nueva y debo sentarme a comer con el rey, pero déjame irme, para que me esconda en el campo hasta el atardecer del tercer día.

6 i f thy father at all look after me, and thou hast said, David asked earnestly of me to run to Beth-Lehem his city, for a sacrifice of the days there for all the family.

Si tu padre me echa de menos, entonces di le: ‘David me rogó mucho que le dejara ir a toda prisa a Belén (Casa del Pan) su ciudad, porque allá se celebra el sacrificio anual por toda la familia.’

7 I f thus he say: Good; peace for thy servant; and if it be very displeasing to him -- know that the evil hath been determined by him;

Si él dice: ‘Está bien,’ tu siervo estará seguro; pero si se enoja, sabrás que ha decidido hacer el mal.

8 a nd thou hast done kindness, to thy servant, for into a covenant of Jehovah thou hast brought thy servant with thee; -- and if there is in me iniquity, put thou me to death; and unto thy father, why is this -- thou dost bring me in?'

Trata entonces con misericordia a tu siervo, ya que has hecho entrar a tu siervo en un pacto del Señor contigo. Pero si hay maldad en mí, mátame tú; pues, ¿por qué llevarme a tu padre?”

9 A nd Jonathan saith, `Far be it from thee! for I certainly do not know that the evil hath been determined by my father to come upon thee, and I do not declare it to thee.'

Respondió Jonatán: “¡Nunca te suceda tal cosa! Porque si yo me entero que mi padre ha decidido que el mal caiga sobre ti, ¿no te lo avisaría yo?”

10 A nd David saith unto Jonathan, `Who doth declare to me? or what thy father doth answer thee sharply?'

David respondió a Jonatán: “¿Quién me avisará si tu padre te responde ásperamente?”

11 A nd Jonathan saith unto David, `Come, and we go out into the field;' and they go out both of them into the field.

“Ven, salgamos al campo,” dijo Jonatán a David. Y ambos salieron al campo.

12 A nd Jonathan saith unto David, `Jehovah, God of Israel -- when I search my father, about time to-morrow the third, and lo, good towards David, and I do not then send unto thee, and have uncovered thine ear --

Entonces Jonatán dijo a David: “El Señor, Dios de Israel, sea testigo. Cuando yo haya hablado con mi padre como a esta hora mañana, o al tercer día, si hay buen ánimo para con David, ¿no habré de enviar a ti para hacértelo saber ?

13 t hus doth Jehovah do to Jonathan, and thus doth He add; when the evil concerning thee is good to my father, then I have uncovered thine ear, and sent thee away, and thou hast gone in peace, and Jehovah is with thee, as he was with my father;

Si mi padre quiere hacerte mal, que así haga el Señor a Jonatán y aun le añada si no te lo hago saber y te envío para que vayas en paz. Y que el Señor sea contigo, como ha sido con mi padre.

14 a nd not only while I am alive dost thou do with me the kindness of Jehovah, and I die not,

Y si todavía vivo, ¿no me mostrarás la misericordia del Señor, para que no me maten.

15 b ut thou dost not cut off thy kindness from my house unto the age, nor in Jehovah's cutting off the enemies of David, each one from off the face of the ground.'

Ni quitarás tu misericordia de mi casa para siempre, ni aun cuando el Señor haya quitado de la superficie de la tierra a cada uno de los enemigos de David ?”

16 A nd Jonathan covenanteth with the house of David, and Jehovah hath sought from the hand of the enemies of David;

Jonatán, pues, hizo un pacto con la casa de David, diciendo: “El Señor lo demande de la mano de los enemigos de David.”

17 a nd Jonathan addeth to cause David to swear, because he loveth him, for with the love of his own soul he hath loved him.

Y Jonatán hizo jurar a David otra vez a causa de su amor por él, pues lo amaba como a sí mismo.

18 A nd Jonathan saith to him, `To-morrow new moon, and thou hast been looked after, for thy seat is looked after;

Entonces Jonatán le dijo: “Mañana es luna nueva y serás echado de menos, porque tu asiento estará vacío.

19 a nd on the third day thou dost certainly come down, and hast come in unto the place where thou wast hidden in the day of the work, and hast remained near the stone Ezel.

Cuando hayas estado ausente tres días, descenderás aprisa y vendrás al lugar donde te escondiste el día de aquel suceso, y permanecerás junto a la piedra de Ezel.

20 ` And I shoot three of the arrows at the side, sending out for myself at a mark;

Yo tiraré tres flechas hacia un lado, como tirando al blanco.

21 a nd lo, I send the youth: Go, find the arrows. If I at all say to the youth, Lo, the arrows on this side of thee -- take them, -- then come thou, for peace for thee, and there is nothing; Jehovah liveth.

Entonces enviaré al muchacho, diciendo: ‘Ve, busca las flechas.’ Si digo claramente al muchacho: ‘Mira, las flechas están más acá de ti, tómalas,’ entonces ven porque hay seguridad para ti y no habrá mal, vive el Señor.

22 A nd if thus I say to the young man, Lo, the arrows beyond thee, -- go, for Jehovah hath sent thee away;

Pero si digo al joven: ‘Mira, las flechas están más allá de ti,’ vete, porque el Señor quiere que te vayas.

23 a s to the thing which we have spoken, I and thou, lo, Jehovah between me and thee -- unto the age.'

En cuanto al acuerdo del cual tú y yo hemos hablado, que el Señor esté entre nosotros dos para siempre.”

24 A nd David is hidden in the field, and it is the new moon, and the king sitteth down by the food to eat,

Se escondió, pues, David en el campo. Cuando llegó la luna nueva, el rey se sentó a comer.

25 a nd the king sitteth on his seat, as time by time, on a seat by the wall, and Jonathan riseth, and Abner sitteth at the side of Saul, and David's place is looked after.

El rey se sentó en su asiento como de costumbre, en el asiento junto a la pared. Jonatán se levantó, y Abner se sentó al lado de Saúl, pero el lugar de David estaba vacío.

26 A nd Saul hath not spoken anything on that day, for he said, `It an accident; he is not clean -- surely not clean.'

Sin embargo, Saúl no dijo nada aquel día, porque se dijo: “Es una casualidad, no estará limpio; de seguro que no se ha purificado.”

27 A nd it cometh to pass on the second morrow of the new moon, that David's place is looked after, and Saul saith unto Jonathan his son, `Wherefore hath the son of Jesse not come in, either yesterday or to-day, unto the food?'

Pero al día siguiente, el segundo día de la luna nueva, el lugar de David estaba aún vacío. Entonces Saúl dijo a su hijo Jonatán: “¿Por qué no ha venido el hijo de Isaí a la comida ni ayer ni hoy?”

28 A nd Jonathan answereth Saul, `David hath been earnestly asked of me unto Beth-Lehem,

Y Jonatán respondió a Saúl: “David me rogó encarecidamente que le dejara ir a Belén.

29 a nd he saith, Send me away, I pray thee, for a family sacrifice we have in the city, and my brother himself hath given command to me, and now, if I have found grace in thine eyes, let me go away, I pray thee, and see my brethren; therefore he hath not come unto the table of the king.'

Me dijo: ‘Te ruego que me dejes ir, pues nuestra familia tiene sacrificio en la ciudad y mi hermano me ha mandado que asista. Ahora pues, si he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, te ruego me dejes ir para ver a mis hermanos.’ Por este motivo no ha venido a la mesa del rey.”

30 A nd the anger of Saul burneth against Jonathan, and he saith to him, `Son of a perverse rebellious woman! have I not known that thou art fixing on the son of Jesse to thy shame, and to the shame of the nakedness of thy mother?

Se encendió la ira de Saúl contra Jonatán, y le dijo: “¡Hijo de perversa y rebelde! ¿Acaso no sé yo que prefieres al hijo de Isaí, para tu propia vergüenza y para vergüenza de la desnudez de tu madre?

31 f or all the days that the son of Jesse liveth on the ground thou art not established, thou and thy kingdom; and now, send and bring him unto me, for he a son of death.'

Pues mientras viva sobre la tierra el hijo de Isaí, ni tú ni tu reino serán establecidos. Ahora pues, manda a traérmelo, porque ciertamente ha de morir.”

32 A nd Jonathan answereth Saul his father, and saith unto him, `Why is he put to death? what hath he done?'

Pero Jonatán respondió a su padre Saúl, y le dijo: “¿Por qué ha de morir? ¿Qué ha hecho ?”

33 A nd Saul casteth the javelin at him to smite him, and Jonathan knoweth that it hath been determined by his father to put David to death.

Entonces Saúl le arrojó la lanza para matarlo; así Jonatán supo que su padre había decidido matar a David.

34 A nd Jonathan riseth from the table in the heat of anger, and hath not eaten food on the second day of the new moon, for he hath been grieved for David, for his father put him to shame.

Jonatán se levantó de la mesa ardiendo en ira y no comió pan el segundo día de la luna nueva, pues estaba entristecido por David, porque su padre le había afrentado.

35 A nd it cometh to pass in the morning, that Jonathan goeth out into the field for the appointment with David, and a little youth with him.

A la mañana siguiente Jonatán salió al campo para reunirse con David, y un muchacho pequeño iba con él.

36 A nd he saith to his youth, `Run, find, I pray thee, the arrows which I am shooting;' the youth is running, and he hath shot the arrow, causing to pass over him.

Y dijo al muchacho: “Corre, busca ahora las flechas que voy a tirar.” Y mientras el muchacho corría, tiró una flecha más allá de él.

37 A nd the youth cometh unto the place of the arrow which Jonathan hath shot, and Jonathan calleth after the youth, and saith, `Is not the arrow beyond thee?'

Cuando el muchacho llegó a la flecha que Jonatán había tirado, Jonatán le gritó al muchacho: “¿No está la flecha más allá de ti ?”

38 a nd Jonathan calleth after the youth, `Speed, haste, stand not;' and Jonathan's youth gathereth the arrows, and cometh unto his lord.

Y Jonatán llamó al muchacho: “Corre, date prisa, no te detengas.” Y el muchacho de Jonatán recogió la flecha y volvió a su señor.

39 A nd the youth hath not known anything, only Jonathan and David knew the word.

Pero el muchacho no sospechaba nada; sólo Jonatán y David sabían del asunto.

40 A nd Jonathan giveth his weapons unto the youth whom he hath, and saith to him, `Go, carry into the city.'

Entonces Jonatán dio sus armas al muchacho y le dijo: “Vete, lléva las a la ciudad.”

41 T he youth hath gone, and David hath risen from Ezel, at the south, and falleth on his face to the earth, and boweth himself three times, and they kiss one another, and they weep one with another, till David exerted himself;

Cuando el muchacho se fue, David se levantó del lado del sur, y cayendo rostro en tierra, se postró tres veces. Y se besaron el uno al otro y lloraron juntos, pero David lloró más.

42 a nd Jonathan saith to David, `Go in peace, in that we have sworn -- we two -- in the name of Jehovah, saying, Jehovah is between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed -- unto the age;' and he riseth and goeth; and Jonathan hath gone in to the city.

Y Jonatán dijo a David: “Vete en paz, ya que nos hemos jurado el uno al otro en el nombre del Señor, diciendo: ‘El Señor esté entre tú y yo, y entre mi descendencia y tu descendencia para siempre.’” David se levantó y se fue, y Jonatán entró en la ciudad.
