1 A nd the chief priest said, `Are then these things so?'

El sumo sacerdote dijo: “¿Es esto así?”

2 a nd he said, `Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken: The God of the glory did appear to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia, before his dwelling in Haran,

Esteban respondió: “Escúchen me, hermanos y padres. El Dios de gloria apareció a nuestro padre Abraham cuando estaba en Mesopotamia, antes que habitara en Harán,

3 a nd He said to him, Go forth out of thy land, and out of thy kindred, and come to a land that I shall shew thee.

y le dijo: ‘ Sal de tu tierra y de tu familia, y ve a la tierra que Yo te mostrare.’

4 ` Then having come forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran, and from thence, after the death of his father, He did remove him to this land wherein ye now dwell,

“Entonces Abraham salió de la tierra de los Caldeos y se estableció en Harán. Y de allí, después de la muerte de su padre, Dios lo trasladó a esta tierra en la cual ahora ustedes habitan.

5 a nd He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a footstep, and did promise to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him -- he having no child.

No le dio en ella heredad, ni siquiera la medida de la planta del pie, y sin embargo, aunque no tenía hijo, prometió que se la daria en posesion a el y a su descendencia despues de el.

6 ` And God spake thus, That his seed shall be sojourning in a strange land, and they shall cause it to serve, and shall do it evil four hundred years,

Y Dios dijo así: ‘ Que sus descendientes serian extranjeros en una tierra extraña, y que serian esclavizados y maltratados por 400 años.

7 a nd the nation whom they shall serve I will judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and shall do Me service in this place.

‘ Pero Yo mismo juzgare a cualquier nacion de la cual sean esclavos,’ dijo Dios ‘ y despues de eso saldran y Me serviran (adoraran) en este lugar.’

8 ` And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begat Isaac, and did circumcise him on the eighth day, and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob -- the twelve patriarchs;

Dios le dio el pacto de la circuncisión; y así Abraham vino a ser el padre de Isaac, y lo circuncidó al octavo día; e Isaac vino a ser el padre de Jacob, y Jacob de los doce patriarcas.

9 a nd the patriarchs, having been moved with jealousy, sold Joseph to Egypt, and God was with him,

“Los patriarcas tuvieron envidia de José y lo vendieron para Egipto. Pero Dios estaba con él,

10 a nd did deliver him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he did set him -- governor over Egypt and all his house.

y lo rescató de todas sus aflicciones. Le dio gracia y sabiduría delante de Faraón, rey de Egipto, y éste lo puso por gobernador sobre Egipto y sobre toda su casa.

11 ` And there came a dearth upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers were not finding sustenance,

“Entonces vino hambre sobre todo Egipto y Canaán, y con ella gran aflicción, y nuestros padres (antepasados) no hallaban alimentos.

12 a nd Jacob having heard that there was corn in Egypt, sent forth our fathers a first time;

Pero cuando Jacob supo que había grano en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres allá la primera vez.

13 a nd at the second time was Joseph made known to his brethren, and Joseph's kindred became manifest to Pharaoh,

En la segunda visita, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos, y conoció Faraón la familia de José.

14 a nd Joseph having sent, did call for his father Jacob, and all his kindred -- with seventy and five souls --

José, enviando mensaje, mandó llamar a Jacob su padre y a toda su familia, en total setenta y cinco personas.

15 a nd Jacob went down to Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers,

“Y Jacob descendió a Egipto, y allí murió él y también nuestros padres.

16 a nd they were carried over into Sychem, and were laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in money from the sons of Emmor, of Sychem.

De allí fueron trasladados a Siquem, y puestos en el sepulcro que por una suma de dinero había comprado Abraham a los hijos de Hamor en Siquem.

17 ` And according as the time of the promise was drawing nigh, which God did swear to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

“Pero a medida que se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa que Dios había confirmado a Abraham, el pueblo crecía y se multiplicaba en Egipto,

18 t ill another king rose, who had not known Joseph;

hasta que surgio otro rey en Egipto que no sabia nada de Jose.

19 t his one, having dealt subtilely with our kindred, did evil to our fathers, causing to expose their babes, that they might not live;

Este rey, obrando con astucia contra nuestro pueblo, maltrató a nuestros padres, a fin de que expusieran a la muerte a sus niños para que no vivieran.

20 i n which time Moses was born, and he was fair to God, and he was brought up three months in the house of his father;

“Fue por ese tiempo que Moisés nació. Era hermoso a la vista de Dios, y fue criado por tres meses en la casa de su padre.

21 a nd he having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and did rear him to herself for a son;

Después de ser abandonado para morir, la hija de Faraón se lo llevó y lo crió como su propio hijo.

22 a nd Moses was taught in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in words and in works.

Moisés fue instruido en toda la sabiduría de los Egipcios, y era un hombre poderoso en palabras y en hechos.

23 ` And when forty years were fulfilled to him, it came upon his heart to look after his brethren, the sons of Israel;

Pero cuando iba a cumplir la edad de cuarenta años, sintió en su corazón el deseo de visitar a sus hermanos, los Israelitas.

24 a nd having seen a certain one suffering injustice, he did defend, and did justice to the oppressed, having smitten the Egyptian;

Al ver que uno de ellos era tratado injustamente, lo defendió y vengó al oprimido, matando al Egipcio.

25 a nd he was supposing his brethren to understand that God through his hand doth give salvation; and they did not understand.

Pensaba que sus hermanos entendían que Dios les estaba dando libertad (salvación) por medio de él, pero ellos no entendieron.

26 ` On the succeeding day, also, he shewed himself to them as they are striving, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, brethren are ye, wherefore do ye injustice to one another?

“Al día siguiente se les presentó, cuando dos de ellos reñían, y trató de poner paz entre ellos, diciendo: ‘Varones, ustedes son hermanos, ¿por qué se hieren el uno al otro ?’

27 a nd he who is doing injustice to the neighbour, did thrust him away, saying, Who set thee a ruler and a judge over us?

Pero el que estaba hiriendo a su prójimo lo empujó, diciendo: ‘¿ Quien te ha puesto por gobernante y juez sobre nosotros ?

28 t o kill me dost thou wish, as thou didst kill yesterday the Egyptian?

¿ Acaso quieres matarme como mataste ayer al egipcio ?’

29 ` And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons,

Al oír estas palabras, Moises huyo y se convirtio en extranjero en la tierra de Madian, donde fue padre de dos hijos.

30 a nd forty years having been fulfilled, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai a messenger of the Lord, in a flame of fire of a bush,

“Pasados cuarenta años, se le aparecio un angel en el desierto del monte Sinaí, en la llama de una zarza que ardia.

31 a nd Moses having seen did wonder at the sight; and he drawing near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord unto him,

Al ver esto, Moisés se maravillaba de la visión, y al acercarse para ver mejor, vino a él la voz del Señor:

32 I the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. `And Moses having become terrified, durst not behold,

‘ Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac, y de Jacob.’ Moisés temblando, no se atrevía a mirar.

33 a nd the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place in which thou hast stood is holy ground;

“ Pero el Señor le dijo: ‘Quitate las sandalias de los pies, porque el lugar donde estas es tierra santa.

34 s eeing I have seen the affliction of My people that in Egypt, and their groaning I did hear, and came down to deliver them; and now come, I will send thee to Egypt.

Ciertamente he visto la opresion de Mi pueblo en Egipto y he oido sus gemidos, y he descendido para librarlos; ven ahora y te enviare a Egipto.’

35 ` This Moses, whom they did refuse, saying, Who did set thee a ruler and a judge? this one God a ruler and a redeemer did send, in the hand of a messenger who appeared to him in the bush;

Este Moisés, a quien ellos rechazaron, diciendo: ‘¿ Quien te ha puesto por gobernante y juez ?’ es el mismo que Dios envió para ser gobernante y libertador con la ayuda del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.

36 t his one did bring them forth, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years;

Este hombre los sacó, haciendo prodigios y señales (milagros) en la tierra de Egipto, en el Mar Rojo y en el desierto por cuarenta años.

37 t his is the Moses who did say to the sons of Israel: A prophet to you shall the Lord your God raise up out of your brethren, like to me, him shall ye hear.

“Este es el mismo Moisés que dijo a los Israelitas: ‘ Dios les levantara un profeta como yo de entre sus hermanos.’

38 ` This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the messenger who is speaking to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers who did receive the living oracles to give to us;

Este es el que estaba en la congregación en el desierto junto con el ángel que le hablaba en el Monte Sinaí, y con nuestros padres, y el que recibió palabras de vida (oráculos divinos) para transmitirlas a ustedes,

39 t o whom our fathers did not wish to become obedient, but did thrust away, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

al cual nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer, sino que lo repudiaron, y en sus corazones desearon regresar a Egipto,

40 s aying to Aaron, Make to us gods who shall go on before us, for this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we have not known what hath happened to him.

diciendo a Aaron: ‘Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros, porque a este Moises que nos saco de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos lo que le haya pasado.’

41 ` And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands,

“En aquellos días hicieron un becerro y ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo, y se regocijaban en las obras de sus manos.

42 a nd God did turn, and did give them up to do service to the host of the heaven, according as it hath been written in the scroll of the prophets: Slain beasts and sacrifices did ye offer to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

Pero Dios se apartó de ellos y los entregó para que sirvieran (adoraran) al ejército del cielo (los cuerpos celestes), como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: ‘¿ Acaso fue a Mi a quien ofrecieron victimas y sacrificios en el desierto por cuarenta años, casa de Israel ?

43 a nd ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan -- the figures that ye made to bow before them, and I will remove your dwelling beyond Babylon.

Tambien llevaron el tabernaculo de Moloc, y la estrella del dios Renfan, las imagenes que hicieron para adorarlas. Yo tambien los deportare mas alla de Babilonia.’

44 ` The tabernacle of the testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, according as He did direct, who is speaking to Moses, to make it according to the figure that he had seen;

“Nuestros padres tuvieron el tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto, tal como le había ordenado que lo hiciera el que habló a Moisés, conforme al modelo que había visto.

45 w hich also our fathers having in succession received, did bring in with Joshua, into the possession of the nations whom God did drive out from the presence of our fathers, till the days of David,

A su vez, habiéndolo recibido, nuestros padres lo introdujeron con Josué al tomar posesión de las naciones (los Gentiles) que Dios arrojó de delante de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David.

46 w ho found favour before God, and requested to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;

Y David halló gracia delante de Dios, y pidió el favor de hallar una morada para el Dios de Jacob.

47 a nd Solomon built Him an house.

Pero fue Salomón quien Le edificó una casa.

48 ` But the Most High in sanctuaries made with hands doth not dwell, according as the prophet saith:

“Sin embargo, el Altísimo no habita en casas hechas por manos de hombres; como dice el profeta:

49 T he heaven My throne, and the earth My footstool; what house will ye build to Me? saith the Lord, or what the place of My rest?

‘ El cielo es Mi trono, y la tierra el estrado de Mis pies; ¿ que casa Me edificaran ?’ dice el Señor, ‘¿ O cual es el lugar de Mi reposo ?

50 h ath not My hand made all these things?

¿ No fue Mi mano la que hizo todas estas cosas ?’

51 ` Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears! ye do always the Holy Spirit resist; as your fathers -- also ye;

“Ustedes, que son tercos e incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos, resisten siempre al Espíritu Santo; como hicieron sus padres, así hacen también ustedes.

52 w hich of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed those who declared before about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom now ye betrayers and murderers have become,

¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron sus padres ? Ellos mataron a los que antes habían anunciado la venida del Justo, del cual ahora ustedes se hicieron traidores y asesinos;

53 w ho received the law by arrangement of messengers, and did not keep.'

ustedes que recibieron la ley por disposición de ángeles y sin embargo no la guardaron.” Martirio de Esteban

54 A nd hearing these things, they were cut to the hearts, and did gnash the teeth at him;

Al oír esto, se sintieron profundamente ofendidos, y crujían los dientes contra él.

55 a nd being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked stedfastly to the heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

Pero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo, fijos los ojos en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios y a Jesús de pie a la diestra de Dios;

56 a nd he said, `Lo, I see the heavens having been opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.'

y dijo: “Veo los cielos abiertos, y al Hijo del Hombre de pie a la diestra de Dios.”

57 A nd they, having cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and did rush with one accord upon him,

Entonces ellos gritaron a gran voz, y tapándose los oídos se lanzaron a una contra él.

58 a nd having cast him forth outside of the city, they were stoning -- and the witnesses did put down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul --

Echándolo fuera de la ciudad, comenzaron a apedrearlo; y los testigos pusieron sus mantos a los pies de un joven llamado Saulo (Pablo).

59 a nd they were stoning Stephen, calling and saying, `Lord Jesus, receive my spirit;'

Y mientras lo apedreaban, Esteban invocaba al Señor y decía: “Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu.”

60 a nd having bowed the knees, he cried with a loud voice, `Lord, mayest thou not lay to them this sin;' and this having said, he fell asleep.

Cayendo de rodillas, clamó en alta voz: “Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado.” Habiendo dicho esto, durmió (expiró).
