1 O n that day there was read in the book of Moses, in the ears of the people, and it hath been found written in it that an Ammonite and Moabite doth not come into the assembly of God -- unto the age,

Aquel día leyeron del Libro de Moisés a oídos del pueblo; y se encontró escrito en él que los Amonitas y los Moabitas no debían entrar jamás en la asamblea de Dios,

2 b ecause they have not come before the sons of Israel with bread and with water, and hire against them Balaam to revile them, and our God turneth the reviling into a blessing.

porque no recibieron a los Israelitas con pan y agua, sino que contrataron contra ellos a Balaam para maldecirlos; pero nuestro Dios convirtió la maldición en bendición.

3 A nd it cometh to pass, at their hearing the law, that they separate all the mixed people from Israel.

Y cuando oyeron la ley, excluyeron de Israel a todo extranjero.

4 A nd before this Eliashib the priest, appointed over chambers of the house of our God, a relation of Tobiah,

Antes de esto, el sacerdote Eliasib, encargado de los aposentos de la casa de nuestro Dios, y que era pariente de Tobías,

5 a nd he maketh for him a great chamber, and there they were formerly putting the present, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the corn, the new wine, and the oil -- the commanded thing of the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers -- and the heave-offering of the priests.

le había preparado una habitación amplia, donde anteriormente se colocaban las ofrendas de cereal, el incienso, los utensilios, y los diezmos del cereal, del vino nuevo y del aceite prescritos para los Levitas, los cantores y los porteros, y las contribuciones para los sacerdotes.

6 A nd during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty and second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon did I come unto the king, and at the end of days I have asked of the king,

Pero durante todo este tiempo yo no estaba en Jerusalén, porque en el año treinta y dos de Artajerjes, rey de Babilonia, yo había ido al rey; pero después de algún tiempo, pedí permiso al rey,

7 a nd I come in to Jerusalem, and understand concerning the evil that Eliashib hath done for Tobiah, to make to him a chamber in the courts of the house of God,

y vine a Jerusalén y me enteré del mal que Eliasib había hecho por favorecer a Tobías, al prepararle un aposento en los atrios de la casa de Dios.

8 a nd it is very displeasing to me, and I cast all the vessels of the house of Tobiah without, out of the chamber,

Esto me desagradó mucho, por lo cual arrojé todos los muebles de la casa de Tobías fuera del aposento.

9 a nd I speak, and they cleanse the chambers, and I bring back thither the vessels of the house of God with the present and the frankincense.

Entonces ordené que limpiaran los aposentos; y puse de nuevo allí los utensilios de la casa de Dios con las ofrendas de cereal y el incienso.

10 A nd I know that the portions of the Levites have not been given, and they flee each to his field -- the Levites and the singers, doing the work.

También descubrí que las porciones de los Levitas no se les habían dado, por lo que los Levitas y los cantores que hacían el servicio se habían ido, cada uno a su campo.

11 A nd I strive with the prefects, and say, `Wherefore hath the house of God been forsaken?' and I gather them, and set them on their station;

Por tanto, reprendí a los oficiales, y les dije: “¿Por qué está la casa de Dios abandonada?” Entonces reuní a los Levitas y los restablecí en sus puestos.

12 a nd all Judah have brought in the tithe of the corn, and of the new wine, and of the oil, to the treasuries.

Entonces todo Judá trajo el diezmo del cereal, del vino nuevo y del aceite a los almacenes.

13 A nd I appoint treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; and by their hand Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for stedfast they have been reckoned, and on them to give a portion to their brethren.

Y puse al frente de los almacenes al sacerdote Selemías, al escriba Sadoc, y a Pedaías, uno de los Levitas; además de éstos estaba Hanán, hijo de Zacur, hijo de Matanías; porque se les consideraba dignos de confianza, y su responsabilidad era repartir las raciones a sus parientes.

14 B e mindful of me, O my God, for this, and do not blot out my kind acts that I have done, for the house of my God, and for its charges.

Acuérdate de mí por esto, Dios mío, y no borres las obras de misericordia que he hecho por la casa de mi Dios y por sus servicios.

15 I n those days I have seen in Judah those treading wine-vats on sabbath, and bringing in the sheaves, and lading on the asses, and also, wine, grapes, and figs, and every burden, yea, they are bringing in to Jerusalem on the sabbath-day, and I testify in the day of their selling provision.

En aquellos días vi en Judá a algunos que pisaban los lagares en el día de reposo, y traían manojos de trigo y los cargaban en asnos, y también vino, uvas, higos y toda clase de carga, y los traían a Jerusalén en el día de reposo. Y los amonesté por el día en que vendían los víveres.

16 A nd the Tyrians have dwelt in it, bringing in fish, and every ware, and selling on sabbath to the sons of Judah and in Jerusalem.

También habitaban allí, en Jerusalén, Tirios, que importaban pescado y toda clase de mercancías, y los vendían a los hijos de Judá en el día de reposo.

17 A nd I strive with the freemen of Judah, and say to them, `What this evil thing that ye are doing, and polluting the sabbath-day?

Entonces reprendí a los nobles de Judá, y les dije: “¿Qué acción tan mala es ésta que cometen profanando el día de reposo?

18 T hus did not your fathers do? and our God bringeth in on us all this evil, and on this city, and ye are adding fierceness on Israel, to pollute the sabbath.'

¿No hicieron lo mismo sus padres, y nuestro Dios trajo sobre nosotros y sobre esta ciudad toda esta aflicción? Ustedes, pues, aumentan Su furor contra Israel al profanar el día de reposo.”

19 A nd it cometh to pass, when the gates of Jerusalem have been dark before the sabbath, that I speak, and the doors are shut, and I say, that they do not open them till after the sabbath; and of my servants I have stationed at the gates; there doth not come in a burden on the sabbath-day.

Así que cuando iba oscureciendo a las Puertas de Jerusalén, antes del día de reposo, ordené que se cerraran las puertas y que no las abrieran hasta después del día de reposo. Entonces puse algunos de mis siervos a las puertas para que no entrara ninguna carga en día de reposo.

20 A nd they lodge -- the merchants and sellers of all ware -- at the outside of Jerusalem, once or twice,

Pero una o dos veces, los mercaderes y vendedores de toda clase de mercancía pasaron la noche fuera de Jerusalén.

21 a nd I testify against them, and say unto them, `Wherefore are ye lodging over-against the wall? if ye repeat, a hand I put forth upon you;' from that time they have not come in on the sabbath.

Entonces les advertí, y les dije: “¿Por qué pasan la noche delante de la muralla? Si lo hacen de nuevo, usaré fuerza contra ustedes.” Desde entonces no vinieron más en el día de reposo.

22 A nd I say to the Levites, that they be cleansed, and, coming in, keeping the gates, to sanctify the sabbath-day. Also, this, remember for me, O my God, and have pity on me, according to the abundance of Thy kindness.

Y ordené a los Levitas que se purificaran y que vinieran a guardar las puertas para santificar el día de reposo. Por esto también acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y ten piedad de mí conforme a la grandeza de Tu misericordia.

23 A lso, in those days, I have seen the Jews have settled women of Ashdod, of Ammon, of Moab.

En aquellos días también vi a Judíos que se habían casado con mujeres Asdoditas, Amonitas y Moabitas.

24 A nd of their sons, half are speaking Ashdoditish -- and are not knowing to speak Jewish -- and according to the language of people and people.

De sus hijos, la mitad hablaban la lengua de Asdod, y ninguno de ellos podía hablar la lengua de Judá, sino la lengua de su propio pueblo.

25 A nd I strive with them, and declare them vile, and smite certain of them, and pluck off their hair, and cause them to swear by God, `Ye do not give your daughters to their sons, nor do ye take of their daughters to your sons, and to yourselves.

Así que los reprendí y los maldije, herí a algunos de ellos y les arranqué el cabello, y les hice jurar por Dios, diciéndoles: “No darán sus hijas a sus hijos; tampoco tomarán de sus hijas para sus hijos ni para ustedes mismos.

26 ` By these did not Solomon king of Israel sin? and among the many nations there was no king like him, and beloved by his God he was, and God maketh him king over all Israel -- even him did the strange women cause to sin.

¿No pecó por esto Salomón, rey de Israel ? Sin embargo, entre tantas naciones no hubo rey como él, y era amado por su Dios, y Dios le había hecho rey sobre todo Israel; pero aún a él le hicieron pecar las mujeres extranjeras.

27 A nd to you do we hearken to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God, to settle strange women?'

¿Y se debe oír de ustedes que han cometido todo este gran mal obrando infielmente contra nuestro Dios casándose con mujeres extranjeras ?”

28 A nd of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest, son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, and I cause him to flee from off me.

Aun uno de los hijos de Joiada, hijo del sumo sacerdote Eliasib, era yerno de Sanbalat el Horonita, y lo eché de mi lado.

29 B e mindful of them, O my God, for the redeemed of the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

“Acuérdate de ellos, Dios mío, porque han profanado el sacerdocio y el pacto del sacerdocio y de los Levitas.

30 A nd I have cleansed them from every stranger, and appoint charges to priests and to Levites, each in his work,

Así los purifiqué de todo lo extranjero, y designé oficios para los sacerdotes y Levitas, cada uno en su ministerio,

31 a nd for the wood-offering at appointed times, and for first-fruits. Be mindful of me, O my God, for good.

e hice arreglos para la provisión de leña en los tiempos señalados y para las primicias. ¡Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para bien!”
