1 A nd there is a great cry of the people and their wives, concerning their brethren the Jews,

Y hubo gran clamor del pueblo y de sus mujeres contra sus hermanos Judíos.

2 y ea, there are who are saying, `Our sons, and our daughters, we -- are many, and we receive corn, and eat, and live.'

Había quienes decían: “Nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas somos muchos; por tanto, que se nos dé trigo para que comamos y vivamos.”

3 A nd there are who are saying, `Our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses, we are pledging, and we receive corn for the famine.'

Había otros que decían: “Nosotros tenemos que empeñar nuestros campos, nuestras viñas y nuestras casas para conseguir grano, a causa del hambre.”

4 A nd there are who are saying, `We have borrowed money for the tribute of the king, our fields, and our vineyards;

También había otros que decían: “Hemos pedido dinero prestado para el impuesto del rey sobre nuestros campos y nuestras viñas.

5 a nd now, as the flesh of our brethren our flesh, as their sons our sons, and lo, we are subduing our sons and our daughters for servants, and there are of our daughters subdued, and our hand hath no might, and our fields and our vineyards to others.'

Ahora bien, nuestra carne es como la carne de nuestros hermanos, y nuestros hijos como sus hijos. Sin embargo, estamos obligando a nuestros hijos y a nuestras hijas a que sean esclavos, y algunas de nuestras hijas ya están sometidas a servidumbre, y no podemos hacer nada porque nuestros campos y nuestras viñas pertenecen a otros.”

6 A nd it is very displeasing to me when I have heard their cry and these words,

Entonces me enojé en gran manera cuando oí su clamor y estas palabras.

7 a nd my heart reigneth over me, and I strive with the freemen, and with the prefects, and say to them, `Usury one upon another ye are exacting;' and I set against them a great assembly,

Se rebeló mi corazón dentro de mí, y reprendí a los nobles y a los oficiales y les dije: “Ustedes están cobrando en exceso cada uno a su hermano.” Por tanto congregué contra ellos una gran asamblea.

8 a nd say to them, `We have acquired our brethren the Jews, those sold to the nations, according to the ability that in us, and ye also sell your brethren, and they have been sold to us!' and they are silent, and have not found a word.

Y les dije: “Nosotros, conforme a nuestras posibilidades, hemos redimido a nuestros hermanos Judíos que fueron vendidos a las naciones; y ahora, ¿venderían ustedes aun a sus hermanos para que sean vendidos a nosotros?” Ellos se quedaron callados y no hallaron respuesta que dar.

9 A nd I say, `Not good the thing that ye are doing; in the fear of our God do ye not walk, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

Agregué además: “No está bien lo que hacen. ¿No deben andar en el temor de nuestro Dios a causa del oprobio de las naciones enemigas nuestras?

10 A nd also, I, my brethren, and my servants, are exacting of them silver and corn; let us leave off, I pray you, this usury.

También yo y mis hermanos y mis siervos les hemos prestado dinero y grano. Les ruego, pues, que abandonemos esta usura.

11 G ive back, I pray you, to them, as to-day, their fields, their vineyards, their olive-yards, and their houses, and the hundredth of the money, and of the corn, of the new wine, and of the oil, that ye are exacting of them.'

Les ruego que hoy mismo les devuelvan sus campos, sus viñas, sus olivares y sus casas; también la centésima parte del dinero y del grano, del vino nuevo y del aceite que están exigiendo de ellos.”

12 A nd they say, `We give back, and of them we seek nothing; so we do as thou art saying.' And I call the priests, and cause them to swear to do according to this thing;

Entonces ellos dijeron: “ Lo devolveremos y no les exigiremos nada; haremos tal como has dicho.” Así que llamé a los sacerdotes y les hice jurar que harían conforme a esta promesa.

13 a lso, my lap I have shaken, and I say, `Thus doth God shake out every man, who doth not perform this thing, from his house, and from his labour; yea, thus is he shaken out and empty;' and all the assembly say, `Amen,' and praise Jehovah; and the people do according to this thing.

También sacudí los pliegues de mi manto y dije: “Así sacuda Dios de su casa y de sus bienes a todo hombre que no cumpla esta promesa; así sea sacudido y despojado.” Y toda la asamblea dijo: “¡Amén!” Y alabaron al Señor. Entonces el pueblo hizo conforme a esta promesa.

14 A lso, from the day that he appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the thirty and second year of Artaxerxes the king -- twelve years -- I, and my brethren, the bread of the governor have not eaten:

Además, desde el día en que el rey me mandó que fuera gobernador en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte hasta el año treinta y dos del rey Artajerjes, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos hemos comido del pan del gobernador.

15 t he former governors who before me have made themselves heavy on the people, and take of them in bread and wine, besides in silver forty shekels; also, their servants have ruled over the people -- and I have not done so, because of the fear of God.

Pero los gobernadores anteriores que me precedieron gravaban al pueblo y tomaban de ellos cuarenta siclos (456 gramos) de plata además del pan y del vino; también sus sirvientes oprimían al pueblo. Pero yo no hice así, a causa del temor de Dios.

16 A nd also, in the work of this wall I have done mightily, even a field we have not bought, and all my servants are gathered there for the work;

También yo me dediqué a la obra en esta muralla; y no compramos ningún terreno, y todos mis siervos estaban reunidos allí para la obra.

17 a nd of the Jews, and of the prefects, a hundred and fifty men, and those coming in unto us of the nations that round about us, at my table;

Había a mi mesa 150 Judíos y oficiales, sin contar los que vinieron a nosotros de las naciones que nos rodeaban.

18 a nd that which hath been prepared for one day one ox, six fat sheep, also fowls have been prepared for me, and once in ten days of all wines abundantly, and with this, the bread of the governor I have not sought, for heavy is the service on this people.

Lo que se preparaba para cada día era un buey y seis ovejas escogidas, también eran preparadas aves para mí; cada diez días se proveía en abundancia toda clase de vino. Y con todo esto, no reclamé el pan del gobernador, porque la servidumbre era pesada sobre este pueblo.

19 R emember for me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para bien, conforme a todo lo que he hecho por este pueblo.
