1 A man often reproved, hardening the neck, Is suddenly broken, and there is no healing.

L’uomo che, dopo essere stato spesso ripreso, irrigidisce il collo, sarà abbattuto all’improvviso e senza rimedio.

2 I n the multiplying of the righteous the people rejoice, And in the ruling of the wicked the people sigh.

Quando i giusti sono numerosi il popolo si rallegra, ma quando domina l’empio il popolo geme.

3 A man loving wisdom rejoiceth his father, And a friend of harlots destroyeth wealth.

L’uomo che ama la saggezza rallegra suo padre, ma chi frequenta le prostitute dilapida i suoi beni.

4 A king by judgment establisheth a land, And one receiving gifts throweth it down.

Il re, con la giustizia, rende stabile il paese, ma l’uomo che fa estorsioni lo rovina.

5 A man taking a portion above his neighbour, Spreadeth a net for his own steps.

L’uomo che lusinga il prossimo gli tende una rete davanti ai piedi.

6 I n the transgression of the evil a snare, And the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

Nel misfatto del malvagio c’è un’insidia, ma il giusto canta e si rallegra.

7 T he righteous knoweth the plea of the poor, The wicked understandeth not knowledge.

Il giusto prende conoscenza della causa dei deboli, ma l’empio non ha intendimento né conoscenza.

8 M en of scorning ensnare a city, And the wise turn back anger.

I beffardi soffiano nel fuoco delle discordie cittadine, ma i saggi calmano le ire.

9 A wise man is judged by the foolish man, And he hath been angry, And he hath laughed, and there is no rest.

Se un saggio viene a contesa con uno stolto, quello va in collera o ride, e non c’è da intendersi.

10 M en of blood hate the perfect, And the upright seek his soul.

Gli uomini sanguinari odiano chi è integro, ma gli uomini retti proteggono la sua vita.

11 A fool bringeth out all his mind, And the wise till afterwards restraineth it.

Lo stolto dà sfogo a tutta la sua ira, ma il saggio trattiene la propria.

12 A ruler who is attending to lying words, All his ministers wicked.

Quando il sovrano dà retta alle parole bugiarde, tutti i suoi ministri sono malvagi.

13 T he poor and the man of frauds have met together, Jehovah is enlightening the eyes of them both.

Il povero e l’oppressore si incontrano; il Signore illumina gli occhi di entrambi.

14 a king that is judging truly the poor, His throne for ever is established.

Il re che fa giustizia ai deboli secondo verità, avrà il trono stabile per sempre.

15 A rod and reproof give wisdom, And a youth let away is shaming his mother.

La verga e la riprensione danno saggezza, ma il ragazzo lasciato a se stesso fa vergogna a sua madre.

16 I n the multiplying of the wicked transgression multiplieth, And the righteous on their fall do look.

Quando abbondano gli empi, abbondano le trasgressioni, ma i giusti ne vedranno la rovina.

17 C hastise thy son, and he giveth thee comfort, Yea, he giveth delights to thy soul.

Correggi tuo figlio; egli ti darà conforto e procurerà gioia al tuo cuore.

18 W ithout a Vision is a people made naked, And whoso is keeping the law, O his happiness!

Se il popolo non ha rivelazione è senza freno; ma beato colui che osserva la legge!

19 B y words a servant is not instructed though he understand, And there is nothing answering.

Uno schiavo non si corregge a parole; anche se comprende, non ubbidisce.

20 T hou hast seen a man hasty in his words! More hope of a fool than of him.

Hai mai visto un uomo precipitoso nel parlare? C’è più da sperare da uno stolto che da lui.

21 W hoso is bringing up his servant delicately, from youth, his latter end also he is continuator.

Se uno alleva delicatamente da bambino il suo schiavo, questo finirà per credersi figlio.

22 A n angry man stirreth up contention, And a furious man is multiplying transgression.

L’uomo collerico fa nascere contese, e l’uomo furioso commette molte trasgressioni.

23 T he pride of man humbleth him, And humility of spirit upholdeth honour.

L’orgoglio abbassa l’uomo, ma chi è umile di spirito ottiene gloria.

24 W hoso is sharing with a thief is hating his own soul, Execration he heareth, and telleth not.

Chi fa società con il ladro odia se stesso; egli ode la maledizione e non dice nulla.

25 F ear of man causeth a snare, And the confident in Jehovah is set on high.

La paura degli uomini è una trappola, ma chi confida nel Signore è al sicuro.

26 M any are seeking the face of a ruler, And from Jehovah the judgment of each.

Molti cercano il favore del principe, ma il Signore fa giustizia a ognuno.

27 A n abomination to the righteous the perverse man, And an abomination to the wicked the upright in the way!

L’uomo iniquo è un abominio per i giusti, e colui che cammina rettamente è un abominio per gli empi.
