1 A nd Jehoshaphat lieth with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the city of David, and Jehoram his son reigneth in his stead.

Giosafat si addormentò con i suoi padri e con essi fu sepolto nella città di Davide; e Ieoram, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

2 A nd he hath brethren, sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah; all these sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel,

Ieoram aveva dei fratelli, figli di Giosafat: Azaria, Ieiel, Zaccaria, Azaria, Micael e Sefatia. Tutti questi erano figli di Giosafat, re d’Israele,

3 a nd their father giveth to them many gifts of silver and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah, and the kingdom he hath given to Jehoram, for He the first-born.

e il padre loro aveva fatto a essi grandi doni d’argento, d’oro e di cose preziose, con delle città fortificate in Giuda, ma aveva lasciato il regno a Ieoram, perché era il primogenito.

4 A nd Jehoram riseth up over the kingdom of his father, and strengtheneth himself, and slayeth all his brethren with the sword, and also -- of the heads of Israel.

Quando Ieoram ebbe preso possesso del regno di suo padre e vi si fu solidamente stabilito, fece morire di spada tutti i suoi fratelli, come pure alcuni dei capi d’Israele.

5 A son of thirty and two years Jehoram in his reigning, and eight years he hath reigned in Jerusalem,

Ieoram aveva trentadue anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò otto anni a Gerusalemme.

6 a nd he walketh in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab, for a daughter of Ahab hath been to him for a wife, and he doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah,

Egli seguì l’esempio dei re d’Israele, come aveva fatto la casa di Acab, poiché aveva per moglie una figlia di Acab; e fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.

7 a nd Jehovah hath not been willing to destroy the house of David, for the sake of the covenant that He made with David, and as He had said to give to him a lamp, and to his sons -- all the days.

Tuttavia il Signore non volle distruggere la casa di Davide, a motivo del patto che aveva stabilito con Davide e della promessa che aveva fatta di lasciare sempre una lampada a lui e ai suoi figli.

8 I n his days hath Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and cause a king to reign over them;

Ai suoi tempi Edom si ribellò, sottraendosi al giogo di Giuda, e si diede un re.

9 a nd Jehoram passeth over with his heads, and all the chariots with him, and it cometh to pass, he hath risen by night and smiteth the Edomites who are coming round against him, and the princes of the chariots,

Allora Ieoram partì con i suoi capi e con tutti i suoi carri; di notte si alzò, sconfisse gli Edomiti che avevano accerchiato lui e i capitani dei carri.

10 a nd Edom revolteth from under the hand of Judah unto this day; then doth Libnah revolt at that time from under his hand, because he hath forsaken Jehovah, God of his fathers,

Così Edom si è ribellato sottraendosi al giogo di Giuda fino a oggi. In quel medesimo tempo anche Libna si ribellò e si sottrasse al giogo di Giuda, perché Ieoram aveva abbandonato il Signore, Dio dei suoi padri.

11 a lso, he hath made high places in the mountains of Judah, and causeth the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit whoredom, and compelleth Judah.

Ieoram fece anch’egli degli alti luoghi sui monti di Giuda, spinse gli abitanti di Gerusalemme alla prostituzione e sviò Giuda.

12 A nd there cometh in unto him a writing from Elijah the prophet, saying, `Thus said Jehovah, God of David thy father, Because that thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, and in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

E gli giunse uno scritto da parte del profeta Elia che diceva: «Così dice il Signore, Dio di Davide tuo padre: “Poiché tu non hai camminato per le vie di Giosafat, tuo padre, e per le vie di Asa, re di Giuda,

13 a nd thou dost walk in the way of the kings of Israel, and dost cause Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit whoredom like the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also thy brethren, the house of thy father, who are better than thyself, thou hast slain;

ma hai camminato per la via dei re d’Israele; poiché hai spinto alla prostituzione Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, come la casa di Acab vi ha spinto Israele, e perché hai ucciso i tuoi fratelli, membri della famiglia di tuo padre, che erano migliori di te,

14 l o, Jehovah is smiting -- a great smiting -- among thy people, and among thy sons, and among thy wives, and among all thy goods --

ecco, il Signore colpirà con un gran flagello il tuo popolo, i tuoi figli, le tue mogli e tutto quello che ti appartiene.

15 a nd thou, with many sicknesses, with disease of thy bowels, till thy bowels come out, by the sickness, day by day.'

Tu avrai una grave malattia, una malattia intestinale, che si aggraverà di giorno in giorno, finché gli intestini ti vengano fuori per effetto del male”».

16 A nd Jehovah waketh up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, who beside the Cushim,

Il Signore risvegliò contro Ieoram lo spirito dei Filistei e degli Arabi, che confinano con gli Etiopi.

17 a nd they come up into Judah, and rend it, and take captive all the substance that is found at the house of the king, and also his sons, and his wives, and there hath not been left to him a son except Jehoahaz the youngest of his sons.

Essi salirono contro Giuda, l’invasero, portarono via tutte le ricchezze che si trovavano nella casa del re e anche i suoi figli e le sue mogli, in modo che non gli rimase altro figlio se non Ioacaz, che era il più piccolo.

18 A nd after all this hath Jehovah plagued him in his bowels by a disease for which there is no healing,

Dopo tutto questo il Signore lo colpì con una malattia intestinale incurabile.

19 a nd it cometh to pass, from days to days, and at the time of the going out of the end of two years, his bowels have gone out with his sickness, and he dieth of sore diseases, and his people have not made for him a burning like the burning of his fathers.

E, con l’andar del tempo, verso la fine del secondo anno, gli intestini gli vennero fuori in seguito alla malattia; morì in mezzo ad atroci sofferenze. Il suo popolo non bruciò profumi in suo onore, come aveva fatto per i suoi padri.

20 A son of thirty and two was he in his reigning, and eight years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and he goeth without desire, and they bury him in the city of David, and not in the graves of the kings.

Aveva trentadue anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò otto anni a Gerusalemme. Se ne andò senza essere rimpianto, e fu sepolto nella città di Davide, ma non nelle tombe dei re.
