1 A nd the people see that Moses is delaying to come down from the mount, and the people assemble against Aaron, and say unto him, `Rise, make for us gods who go before us, for this Moses -- the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt -- we have not known what hath happened to him.'

Il popolo vide che Mosè tardava a scendere dal monte; allora si radunò intorno ad Aaronne e gli disse: «Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi; poiché quel Mosè, l’uomo che ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto, non sappiamo che fine abbia fatto».

2 A nd Aaron saith unto them, `Break off the rings of gold which in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring in unto me;'

E Aaronne rispose loro: «Staccate gli anelli d’oro che sono agli orecchi delle vostre mogli, dei vostri figli e delle vostre figlie, e portatemeli».

3 a nd all the people themselves break off the rings of gold which in their ears, and bring in unto Aaron,

E tutto il popolo si staccò dagli orecchi gli anelli d’oro e li portò ad Aaronne.

4 a nd he receiveth from their hand, and doth fashion it with a graving tool, and doth make it a molten calf, and they say, `These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

Egli li prese dalle loro mani e, dopo aver cesellato lo stampo, ne fece un vitello di metallo fuso. E quelli dissero: «O Israele, questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto!»

5 A nd Aaron seeth, and buildeth an altar before it, and Aaron calleth, and saith, `A festival to Jehovah -- to-morrow;'

Quando Aaronne vide questo, costruì un altare davanti al vitello ed esclamò: «Domani sarà festa in onore del Signore!»

6 a nd they rise early on the morrow, and cause burnt-offerings to ascend, and bring nigh peace-offerings; and the people sit down to eat and to drink, and rise up to play.

L’indomani, si alzarono di buon’ora, offrirono olocausti e portarono dei sacrifici di ringraziamento; il popolo sedette per mangiare e bere, poi si alzò per divertirsi.

7 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Go, descend, for thy people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt hath done corruptly,

Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Va’, scendi; perché il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto, si è corrotto;

8 t hey have turned aside hastily from the way that I have commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten calf, and bow themselves to it, and sacrifice to it, and say, These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

si sono presto sviati dalla strada che io avevo loro ordinato di seguire; si son fatti un vitello di metallo fuso, l’hanno adorato, gli hanno offerto sacrifici e hanno detto: “O Israele, questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto”».

9 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `I have seen this people, and lo, it a stiff-necked people;

Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè: «Ho considerato bene questo popolo; ecco, è un popolo dal collo duro.

10 a nd now, let Me alone, and My anger doth burn against them, and I consume them, and I make thee become a great nation.'

Dunque, lascia che la mia ira s’infiammi contro di loro e che io li consumi, ma di te io farò una grande nazione».

11 A nd Moses appeaseth the face of Jehovah his God, and saith, `Why, O Jehovah, doth Thine anger burn against Thy people, whom Thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?

Allora Mosè supplicò il Signore, il suo Dio, e disse: «Perché, o Signore, la tua ira s’infiammerebbe contro il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto con grande potenza e con mano forte?

12 w hy do the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil He brought them out to slay them among mountains, and to consume them from off the face of the ground? turn back from the heat of Thine anger, and repent of the evil against Thy people.

Perché gli Egiziani direbbero: “Egli li ha fatti uscire per far loro del male, per ucciderli tra le montagne e per sterminarli dalla faccia della terra!”? Calma l’ardore della tua ira e pèntiti del male di cui minacci il tuo popolo.

13 ` Be mindful of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, Thy servants, to whom Thou hast sworn by Thyself, and unto whom Thou speakest: I multiply your seed as stars of the heavens, and all this land, as I have said, I give to your seed, and they have inherited to the age;'

Ricòrdati di Abraamo, d’Isacco e d’Israele, tuoi servi, ai quali giurasti per te stesso, dicendo loro: “Io moltiplicherò la vostra discendenza come le stelle del cielo; darò alla vostra discendenza tutto questo paese di cui vi ho parlato ed essa lo possederà per sempre”».

14 a nd Jehovah repenteth of the evil which He hath spoken of doing to His people.

E il Signore si pentì del male che aveva detto di fare al suo popolo.

15 A nd Moses turneth, and goeth down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony in his hand, tables written on both their sides, on this and on that they written;

Allora Mosè si voltò e scese dal monte con le due tavole della testimonianza nelle mani: tavole scritte da una parte e dall’altra.

16 a nd the tables are the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, graven on the tables.

Le tavole erano opera di Dio e la scrittura era scrittura di Dio incisa sulle tavole.

17 A nd Joshua heareth the voice of the people in their shouting, and saith unto Moses, `A noise of battle in the camp!'

Or Giosuè, udendo il clamore del popolo che gridava, disse a Mosè: «Si ode un fragore di battaglia nell’accampamento».

18 a nd he saith, `It is not the voice of the crying of might, nor is it the voice of the crying of weakness -- a voice of singing I am hearing.'

Mosè rispose: «Questo non è grido di vittoria, né grido di vinti; il clamore che io odo è di gente che canta».

19 A nd it cometh to pass, when he hath drawn near unto the camp, that he seeth the calf, and the dancing, and the anger of Moses burneth, and he casteth out of his hands the tables, and breaketh them under the mount;

Quando fu vicino all’accampamento, vide il vitello e le danze; e l’ira di Mosè s’infiammò ed egli gettò dalle mani le tavole e le spezzò ai piedi del monte.

20 a nd he taketh the calf which they have made, and burneth with fire, and grindeth until small, and scattereth on the face of the waters, and causeth the sons of Israel to drink.

Poi prese il vitello che quelli avevano fatto, lo bruciò col fuoco, lo ridusse in polvere, sparse la polvere sull’acqua e la fece bere ai figli d’Israele.

21 A nd Moses saith unto Aaron, `What hath this people done to thee, that thou hast brought in upon it a great sin?'

Mosè disse ad Aaronne: «Che ti ha fatto questo popolo, che gli hai attirato addosso un così grande peccato?»

22 a nd Aaron saith, `Let not the anger of my lord burn; thou -- thou hast known the people that it in evil;

Aaronne rispose: «L’ira del mio signore non s’infiammi; tu conosci questo popolo e sai che è incline al male.

23 a nd they say to me, Make for us gods, who go before us, for this Moses -- the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt -- we have not known what hath happened to him;

Essi mi hanno detto: “Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi; poiché quel Mosè, l’uomo che ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto, non sappiamo che fine abbia fatto”.

24 a nd I say to them, Whoso hath gold, let them break off, and they give to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf cometh out.'

Io ho detto loro: “Chi ha dell’oro se lo levi di dosso!” Essi me l’hanno dato; io l’ho buttato nel fuoco e ne è venuto fuori questo vitello».

25 A nd Moses seeth the people that it unbridled, for Aaron hath made it unbridled for contempt among its withstanders,

Quando Mosè vide che il popolo era senza freno e che Aaronne lo aveva lasciato sfrenarsi esponendolo all’obbrobrio dei suoi nemici,

26 a nd Moses standeth in the gate of the camp, and saith, `Who for Jehovah? -- unto me!' and all the sons of Levi are gathered unto him;

si fermò all’ingresso dell’accampamento, e disse: «Chiunque è per il Signore, venga a me!» E tutti i figli di Levi si radunarono presso di lui.

27 a nd he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, Put each his sword by his thigh, pass over and turn back from gate to gate through the camp, and slay each his brother, and each his friend, and each his relation.'

Ed egli disse loro: «Così dice il Signore, il Dio d’Israele: “Ognuno di voi si metta la spada al fianco; percorrete l’accampamento da una porta all’altra di esso, e ciascuno uccida il fratello, ciascuno l’amico, ciascuno il vicino!”»

28 A nd the sons of Levi do according to the word of Moses, and there fall of the people on that day about three thousand men,

I figli di Levi eseguirono l’ordine di Mosè, e in quel giorno caddero circa tremila uomini.

29 a nd Moses saith, `Consecrate your hand to-day to Jehovah, for a man against his son, and against his brother, so as to bring on you to-day a blessing.'

Poi Mosè disse: «Consacratevi oggi al Signore, ciascuno a prezzo del proprio figlio e del proprio fratello, e il Signore vi conceda oggi una benedizione».

30 A nd it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Moses saith unto the people, `Ye -- ye have sinned a great sin, and now I go up unto Jehovah, if so be I atone for your sin.'

L’indomani Mosè disse al popolo: «Voi avete commesso un grande peccato; ma ora io salirò dal Signore; forse otterrò che il vostro peccato vi sia perdonato».

31 A nd Moses turneth back unto Jehovah, and saith, `Oh this people hath sinned a great sin, that they make to themselves a god of gold;

Mosè dunque tornò al Signore e disse: «Ahimè, questo popolo ha commesso un grande peccato e si è fatto un dio d’oro;

32 a nd now, if Thou takest away their sin -- and if not -- blot me, I pray thee, out of Thy book which Thou hast written.'

nondimeno, perdona ora il loro peccato! Se no, ti prego, cancellami dal tuo libro che hai scritto!»

33 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Whoso hath sinned against Me -- I blot him out of My book;

Il Signore rispose a Mosè: «Colui che ha peccato contro di me, quello cancellerò dal mio libro!

34 a nd now, go, lead the people whithersoever I have spoken to thee of; lo, My messenger goeth before thee, and in the day of my charging -- then I have charged upon them their sin.'

Ora va’, conduci il popolo dove ti ho detto. Ecco, il mio angelo andrà davanti a te; ma nel giorno che verrò a punire, io li punirò del loro peccato».

35 A nd Jehovah plagueth the people, because they made the calf which Aaron made.

E il Signore colpì il popolo, perché esso era l’autore del vitello che Aaronne aveva fatto.
