1 A nd it came to pass, when Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples,

Quando Gesù ebbe finito tutti questi discorsi, disse ai suoi discepoli:

2 ` Ye have known that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified.'

«Voi sapete che fra due giorni è la Pasqua, e il Figlio dell’uomo sarà consegnato per essere crocifisso».

3 T hen were gathered together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the court of the chief priest who was called Caiaphas;

Allora i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo si riunirono nel palazzo del sommo sacerdote, che si chiamava Caiafa,

4 a nd they consulted together that they might take Jesus by guile, and kill,

e deliberarono di prendere Gesù con inganno e di farlo morire.

5 a nd they said, `Not in the feast, that there may not be a tumult among the people.'

Ma dicevano: «Non durante la festa, perché non accada qualche tumulto nel popolo». Maria di Betania unge il capo a Gesù

6 A nd Jesus having been in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

Mentre Gesù era a Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso,

7 t here came to him a woman having an alabaster box of ointment, very precious, and she poured on his head as he is reclining (at meat).

venne a lui una donna che aveva un vaso di alabastro pieno d’olio profumato di gran valore e lo versò sul capo di lui che stava a tavola.

8 A nd having seen, his disciples were much displeased, saying, `To what purpose this waste?

Veduto ciò, i discepoli si indignarono e dissero: «Perché questo spreco?

9 f or this ointment could have been sold for much, and given to the poor.'

Questo, infatti, si sarebbe potuto vendere caro e dare il denaro ai poveri».

10 A nd Jesus having known, said to them, `Why do ye give trouble to the woman? for a good work she wrought for me;

Ma Gesù se ne accorse e disse loro: «Perché date noia a questa donna? Ha fatto una buona azione verso di me.

11 f or the poor always ye have with you, and me ye have not always;

Perché i poveri li avete sempre con voi, ma me non mi avete sempre.

12 f or she having put this ointment on my body -- for my burial she did.

Versando quest’olio sul mio corpo, lo ha fatto in vista della mia sepoltura.

13 V erily I say to you, Wherever this good news may be proclaimed in the whole world, what this did shall also be spoken of -- for a memorial of her.'

In verità vi dico che in tutto il mondo, dovunque sarà predicato questo vangelo, anche ciò che ella ha fatto sarà raccontato in memoria di lei». Giuda decide di tradire Gesù

14 T hen one of the twelve, who is called Judas Iscariot, having gone unto the chief priests, said,

Allora uno dei dodici, che si chiamava Giuda Iscariota, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti

15 ` What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him up to you?' and they weighed out to him thirty silverlings,

e disse: «Che cosa siete disposti a darmi, se io ve lo consegno?» Ed essi gli fissarono trenta sicli d’argento.

16 a nd from that time he was seeking a convenient season to deliver him up.

Da quell’ora cercava il momento opportuno per consegnarlo. L’ultima Pasqua

17 A nd on the first of the unleavened food came the disciples near to Jesus, saying to him, `Where wilt thou we may prepare for thee to eat the passover?'

Il primo giorno degli Azzimi i discepoli si avvicinarono a Gesù e dissero: «Dove vuoi che ti prepariamo da mangiare la Pasqua?»

18 a nd he said, `Go away to the city, unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher saith, My time is nigh; near thee I keep the passover, with my disciples;'

Egli disse: «Andate in città dal tale e ditegli: “Il Maestro dice: ‘Il mio tempo è vicino; farò la Pasqua da te, con i miei discepoli’”».

19 a nd the disciples did as Jesus appointed them, and prepared the passover.

E i discepoli fecero come Gesù aveva loro ordinato e prepararono la Pasqua.

20 A nd evening having come, he was reclining (at meat) with the twelve,

Quando fu sera, si mise a tavola con i dodici.

21 a nd while they are eating, he said, `Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.'

Mentre mangiavano, disse: «In verità vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà ».

22 A nd being grieved exceedingly, they began to say to him, each of them, `Is it I, Sir?'

Ed essi, profondamente rattristati, cominciarono ciascuno a dirgli uno dopo l’altro: «Sono forse io, Signore?»

23 A nd he answering said, `He who did dip with me the hand in the dish, he will deliver me up;

Ma egli rispose: «Colui che ha messo con me la mano nel piatto, quello mi tradirà.

24 t he Son of Man doth indeed go, as it hath been written concerning him, but wo to that man through whom the Son of Man is delivered up! good it were for him if that man had not been born.'

Certo, il Figlio dell’uomo se ne va, come è scritto di lui; ma guai a quell’uomo dal quale il Figlio dell’uomo è tradito! Meglio sarebbe per quell’uomo se non fosse mai nato».

25 A nd Judas -- he who delivered him up -- answering said, `Is it I, Rabbi?' He saith to him, `Thou hast said.'

E Giuda, il traditore, prese a dire: «Sono forse io, Rabbì?» E Gesù a lui: «Lo hai detto». La cena del Signore

26 A nd while they were eating, Jesus having taken the bread, and having blessed, did brake, and was giving to the disciples, and said, `Take, eat, this is my body;'

Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane e, dopo aver pronunciato la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli dicendo: «Prendete, mangiate, questo è il mio corpo».

27 a nd having taken the cup, and having given thanks, he gave to them, saying, `Drink ye of it -- all;

Poi prese un calice e, dopo aver reso grazie, lo diede loro dicendo: «Bevetene tutti,

28 f or this is my blood of the new covenant, that for many is being poured out -- to remission of sins;

perché questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del patto, il quale è sparso per molti per il perdono dei peccati.

29 a nd I say to you, that I may not drink henceforth on this produce of the vine, till that day when I may drink it with you new in the reign of my Father.'

Vi dico che da ora in poi non berrò più di questo frutto della vigna, fino al giorno che lo berrò nuovo con voi nel regno del Padre mio». Gesù predice il rinnegamento di Pietro

30 A nd having sung a hymn, they went forth to the mount of the Olives;

Dopo che ebbero cantato l’inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi.

31 t hen saith Jesus to them, `All ye shall be stumbled at me this night; for it hath been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad;

Allora Gesù disse loro: «Questa notte voi tutti avrete in me un’occasione di caduta; perché è scritto: “Io percuoterò il pastore e le pecore del gregge saranno disperse”.

32 b ut, after my having risen, I will go before you to Galilee.'

Ma dopo che sarò risuscitato, vi precederò in Galilea».

33 A nd Peter answering said to him, `Even if all shall be stumbled at thee, I will never be stumbled.'

Pietro, rispondendo, gli disse: «Quand’anche tu fossi per tutti un’occasione di caduta, non lo sarai mai per me».

34 J esus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, that, this night, before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me.'

Gesù gli disse: «In verità ti dico che questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte».

35 P eter saith to him, `Even if it may be necessary for me to die with thee, I will not deny thee;' in like manner also said all the disciples.

E Pietro a lui: «Quand’anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». E lo stesso dissero pure tutti i discepoli. Agonia di Gesù nel giardino del Getsemani

36 T hen come with them doth Jesus to a place called Gethsemane, and he saith to the disciples, `Sit ye here, till having gone away, I shall pray yonder.'

Allora Gesù andò con loro in un podere chiamato Getsemani e disse ai discepoli: «Sedete qui finché io sia andato là e abbia pregato».

37 A nd having taken Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful, and to be very heavy;

E, presi con sé Pietro e i due figli di Zebedeo, cominciò a essere triste e angosciato.

38 t hen saith he to them, `Exceedingly sorrowful is my soul -- unto death; abide ye here, and watch with me.'

Allora disse loro: «L’anima mia è oppressa da tristezza mortale; rimanete qui e vegliate con me».

39 A nd having gone forward a little, he fell on his face, praying, and saying, `My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou.'

E, andato un po’ più avanti, si gettò con la faccia a terra, pregando e dicendo: «Padre mio, se è possibile, passi oltre da me questo calice! Ma pure, non come voglio io, ma come tu vuoi».

40 A nd he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and he saith to Peter, `So! ye were not able one hour to watch with me!

Poi tornò dai discepoli e li trovò addormentati. E disse a Pietro: «Così non siete stati capaci di vegliare con me un’ora sola?

41 w atch, and pray, that ye may not enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is forward, but the flesh weak.'

Vegliate e pregate, affinché non cadiate in tentazione; lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole».

42 A gain, a second time, having gone away, he prayed, saying, `My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from me except I drink it, Thy will be done;'

Di nuovo, per la seconda volta, andò e pregò, dicendo: «Padre mio, se non è possibile che questo passi oltre da me senza che io lo beva, sia fatta la tua volontà».

43 a nd having come, he findeth them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

E, tornato, li trovò addormentati, perché i loro occhi erano appesantiti.

44 A nd having left them, having gone away again, he prayed a third time, saying the same word;

Allora, lasciatili, andò di nuovo e pregò per la terza volta, ripetendo le medesime parole.

45 t hen cometh he unto his disciples, and saith to them, `Sleep on henceforth, and rest! lo, the hour hath come nigh, and the Son of Man is delivered up to the hands of sinners.

Poi tornò dai discepoli e disse loro: «Dormite pure oramai, e riposatevi! Ecco, l’ora è vicina, e il Figlio dell’uomo è dato nelle mani dei peccatori.

46 R ise, let us go; lo, he hath come nigh who is delivering me up.'

Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino». Arresto di Gesù

47 A nd while he is yet speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve did come, and with him a great multitude, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

Mentre parlava ancora, ecco arrivare Giuda, uno dei dodici, e insieme a lui una gran folla con spade e bastoni, da parte dei capi dei sacerdoti e degli anziani del popolo.

48 A nd he who did deliver him up did give them a sign, saying, `Whomsoever I will kiss, it is he: lay hold on him;'

Colui che lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; prendetelo».

49 a nd immediately, having come to Jesus, he said, `Hail, Rabbi,' and kissed him;

E in quell’istante, avvicinatosi a Gesù, gli disse: «Ti saluto, Rabbì!» e lo baciò.

50 a nd Jesus said to him, `Comrade, for what art thou present?' Then having come near, they laid hands on Jesus, and took hold on him.

Ma Gesù gli disse: «Amico, che cosa sei venuto a fare?» Allora, avvicinatisi, misero le mani addosso a Gesù e lo presero.

51 A nd lo, one of those with Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, drew his sword, and having struck the servant of the chief priest, he took off his ear.

Ed ecco, uno di quelli che erano con Gesù, stesa la mano, tirò fuori la sua spada e, colpito il servo del sommo sacerdote, gli recise l’orecchio.

52 T hen saith Jesus to him, `Turn back thy sword to its place; for all who did take the sword, by the sword shall perish;

Allora Gesù gli disse: «Riponi la tua spada al suo posto, perché tutti quelli che prendono la spada periranno di spada.

53 d ost thou think that I am not able now to call upon my Father, and He will place beside me more than twelve legions of messengers?

Credi forse che io non potrei pregare il Padre mio che mi mandi in questo istante più di dodici legioni d’angeli ?

54 h ow then may the Writings be fulfilled, that thus it behoveth to happen?'

Come dunque si adempirebbero le Scritture, secondo le quali bisogna che così avvenga?»

55 I n that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, `As against a robber ye did come forth, with swords and sticks, to take me! daily with you I was sitting teaching in the temple, and ye did not lay hold on me;

In quel momento Gesù disse alla folla: «Voi siete usciti con spade e bastoni, come contro un brigante, per prendermi. Ogni giorno sedevo nel tempio a insegnare e voi non mi avete preso;

56 b ut all this hath come to pass, that the Writings of the prophets may be fulfilled;' then all the disciples, having left him, fled.

ma tutto questo è avvenuto affinché si adempissero le Scritture dei profeti». Allora tutti i discepoli lo abbandonarono e fuggirono. Gesù davanti a Caiafa e al sinedrio

57 A nd those laying hold on Jesus led away unto Caiaphas the chief priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together,

Quelli che avevano preso Gesù lo condussero da Caiafa, sommo sacerdote, presso il quale erano riuniti gli scribi e gli anziani.

58 a nd Peter was following him afar off, unto the court of the chief priest, and having gone in within, he was sitting with the officers, to see the end.

Pietro lo seguiva da lontano, finché giunsero al cortile del sommo sacerdote; ed entrò, mettendosi a sedere con le guardie, per vedere come la vicenda sarebbe finita.

59 A nd the chief priests, and the elders, and all the council, were seeking false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death,

I capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano qualche falsa testimonianza contro Gesù per farlo morire;

60 a nd they did not find; and many false witnesses having come near, they did not find; and at last two false witnesses having come near,

e non ne trovavano, benché si fossero fatti avanti molti falsi testimoni.

61 s aid, `This one said, I am able to throw down the sanctuary of God, and after three days to build it.'

Alla fine se ne fecero avanti due, che dissero: «Costui ha detto: “Io posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e ricostruirlo in tre giorni”».

62 A nd the chief priest having stood up, said to him, `Nothing thou dost answer! what do these witness against thee?

E il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in piedi, gli disse: «Non rispondi nulla? Non senti quello che testimoniano costoro contro di te?»

63 a nd Jesus was silent. And the chief priest answering said to him, `I adjure thee, by the living God, that thou mayest say to us, if thou art the Christ -- the Son of God.'

Ma Gesù taceva. E il sommo sacerdote gli disse: «Ti scongiuro per il Dio vivente di dirci se tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio».

64 J esus saith to him, `Thou hast said; nevertheless I say to you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power, and coming upon the clouds, of the heaven.'

Gesù gli rispose: «Tu l’hai detto; anzi vi dico che da ora in poi vedrete il Figlio dell’uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nuvole del cielo».

65 T hen the chief priest rent his garments, saying, -- `He hath spoken evil; what need have we yet of witnesses? lo, now ye heard his evil speaking;

Allora il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti, dicendo: «Egli ha bestemmiato; che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? Ecco, ora avete udito la bestemmia;

66 w hat think ye?' and they answering said, `He is worthy of death.'

che ve ne pare?» Ed essi risposero: «È reo di morte».

67 T hen did they spit in his face and buffet him, and others did slap,

Allora gli sputarono in viso e gli diedero dei pugni e altri lo schiaffeggiarono,

68 s aying, `Declare to us, O Christ, who he is that struck thee?'

dicendo: «Indovina, Cristo! Chi ti ha percosso?» Gesù rinnegato tre volte da Pietro

69 A nd Peter without was sitting in the court, and there came near to him a certain maid, saying, `And thou wast with Jesus of Galilee!'

Pietro, intanto, stava seduto fuori nel cortile e una serva gli si avvicinò, dicendo: «Anche tu eri con Gesù il Galileo».

70 A nd he denied before all, saying, `I have not known what thou sayest.'

Ma egli lo negò davanti a tutti, dicendo: «Non so che cosa dici».

71 A nd he having gone forth to the porch, another female saw him, and saith to those there, `And this one was with Jesus of Nazareth;'

Come fu uscito nell’atrio, un’altra lo vide e disse a coloro che erano là: « costui era con Gesù il Nazareno».

72 a nd again did he deny with an oath -- `I have not known the man.'

Ed egli negò di nuovo giurando: «Non conosco quell’uomo».

73 A nd after a little those standing near having come, said to Peter, `Truly thou also art of them, for even thy speech doth make thee manifest.'

Di lì a poco, coloro che erano presenti si avvicinarono e dissero a Pietro: «Certo anche tu sei di quelli, perché anche il tuo parlare ti fa riconoscere».

74 T hen began he to anathematise, and to swear -- `I have not known the man;' and immediately did a cock crow,

Allora egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco quell’uomo!» In quell’istante il gallo cantò.

75 a nd Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, he having said to him -- `Before cock-crowing, thrice thou wilt deny me;' and having gone without, he did weep bitterly.

Pietro si ricordò delle parole di Gesù che aveva dette: «Prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte». E, andato fuori, pianse amaramente.
