1 A nd I, Paul, myself, do call upon you -- through the meekness and gentleness of the Christ -- who in presence, indeed humble among you, and being absent, have courage toward you,

Io, Paolo, vi esorto per la mansuetudine e la mitezza di Cristo; io, che quando sono presente tra di voi sono umile, ma quando sono assente sono ardito nei vostri confronti,

2 a nd I beseech, that, being present, I may not have courage, with the confidence with which I reckon to be bold against certain reckoning us as walking according to the flesh;

vi prego di non obbligarmi, quando sarò presente, a procedere arditamente con quella fermezza con la quale intendo agire contro taluni che pensano che noi camminiamo secondo la carne.

3 f or walking in the flesh, not according to the flesh do we war,

In realtà, sebbene viviamo nella carne, non combattiamo secondo la carne;

4 f or the weapons of our warfare not fleshly, but powerful to God for bringing down of strongholds,

infatti le armi della nostra guerra non sono carnali, ma hanno da Dio il potere di distruggere le fortezze, poiché demoliamo i ragionamenti

5 r easonings bringing down, and every high thing lifted up against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ,

e tutto ciò che si eleva orgogliosamente contro la conoscenza di Dio, facendo prigioniero ogni pensiero fino a renderlo ubbidiente a Cristo;

6 a nd being in readiness to avenge every disobedience, whenever your obedience may be fulfilled.

e siamo pronti a punire ogni disubbidienza, quando la vostra ubbidienza sarà completa.

7 T he things in presence do ye see? if any one hath trusted in himself to be Christ's, this let him reckon again from himself, that according as he is Christ's, so also we Christ's;

Voi guardate all’apparenza delle cose. Se uno è convinto dentro di sé di appartenere a Cristo, consideri anche questo dentro di sé: che com’egli è di Cristo, così lo siamo anche noi.

8 f or even if also anything more abundantly I shall boast concerning our authority, that the Lord gave us for building up, and not for casting you down, I shall not be ashamed;

Infatti, se anche volessi vantarmi un po’ più della nostra autorità, che il Signore ha data per la vostra edificazione e non per la vostra rovina, non avrei motivo di vergognarmi.

9 t hat I may not seem as if I would terrify you through the letters,

Dico questo perché non sembri che io cerchi d’intimidirvi con le mie lettere.

10 ` because the letters indeed -- saith one -- weighty and strong, and the bodily presence weak, and the speech despicable.'

Qualcuno dice infatti: «Le sue lettere sono severe e forti, ma la sua presenza fisica è debole e la sua parola è cosa da nulla».

11 T his one -- let him reckon thus: that such as we are in word, through letters, being absent, such also, being present, in deed.

Quel tale si convinca che come siamo a parole, per mezzo delle lettere, quando siamo assenti, così saremo anche a fatti quando saremo presenti.

12 F or we do not make bold to rank or to compare ourselves with certain of those commending themselves, but they, among themselves measuring themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not wise,

Poiché noi non abbiamo il coraggio di classificarci o confrontarci con certuni che si raccomandano da sé; i quali però, misurandosi secondo la loro propria misura e paragonandosi tra di loro stessi, mancano d’intelligenza.

13 a nd we in regard to the unmeasured things will not boast ourselves, but after the measure of the line that the God of measure did appoint to us -- to reach even unto you;

Noi, invece, non ci vanteremo oltre misura, ma entro la misura del campo di attività di cui Dio ci ha segnato i limiti, dandoci di giungere anche fino a voi.

14 f or not as not reaching to you do we stretch ourselves overmuch, for even unto you did we come in the good news of the Christ,

Noi infatti non oltrepassiamo i nostri limiti come se non fossimo giunti fino a voi; perché siamo realmente giunti fino a voi con il vangelo di Cristo.

15 n ot boasting of the things not measured, in other men's labours, and having hope -- your faith increasing -- in you to be enlarged, according to our line -- into abundance,

Non ci vantiamo oltre misura di fatiche altrui, ma nutriamo speranza che, crescendo la vostra fede, saremo tenuti in maggiore considerazione tra di voi nei limiti del campo di attività assegnatoci,

16 i n the beyond you to proclaim good news, not in another's line in regard to the things made ready, to boast;

per poter evangelizzare anche i paesi che sono al di là del vostro senza vantarci, nel campo altrui, di cose già preparate.

17 a nd he who is boasting -- in the Lord let him boast;

Ma chi si vanta, si vanti nel Signore.

18 f or not he who is commending himself is approved, but he whom the Lord doth commend.

Perché non colui che si raccomanda da sé è approvato, ma colui che il Signore raccomanda.
