1 G od of vengeance -- Jehovah! God of vengeance, shine forth.

2 B e lifted up, O Judge of the earth, Send back a recompence on the proud.

Ergiti, giudice della terra, rendi ai superbi quello che si meritano!

3 T ill when the wicked, O Jehovah? Till when do the wicked exult?

Fino a quando gli empi, o Signore, fino a quando gli empi trionferanno?

4 T hey utter -- they speak an old saw, All working iniquity do boast themselves.

Fanno discorsi arroganti, tutti i malfattori si vantano.

5 T hy people, O Jehovah, they bruise, And Thine inheritance they afflict.

Schiacciano il tuo popolo, o Signore, e opprimono la tua eredità.

6 W idow and sojourner they slay, And fatherless ones they murder.

Uccidono la vedova e lo straniero, ammazzano gli orfani.

7 A nd they say, `Jehovah doth not see, And the God of Jacob doth not consider.'

Dicono: «Il Signore non vede, il Dio di Giacobbe non se ne preoccupa».

8 C onsider, ye brutish among the people, And ye foolish, when do ye act wisely?

Cercate di capire, uomini stolti! E voi, sciocchi, quando sarete saggi?

9 H e who planteth the ear doth He not hear? He who formeth the eye doth He not see?

Colui che ha fatto l’orecchio forse non ode? Colui che ha formato l’occhio forse non vede?

10 H e who is instructing nations, Doth He not reprove? He who is teaching man knowledge Jehovah.

Colui che ammonisce le nazioni non saprà pure castigarle, lui che impartisce all’uomo la conoscenza?

11 H e knoweth the thoughts of man, that they vanity.

Il Signore conosce i pensieri dell’uomo, sa che sono vani.

12 O the happiness of the man Whom Thou instructest, O Jah, And out of Thy law teachest him,

Beato l’uomo che tu correggi, o Signore, e istruisci con la tua legge

13 T o give rest to him from days of evil, While a pit is digged for the wicked.

per dargli sollievo nei giorni dell’avversità, finché la fossa sia scavata per l’empio.

14 F or Jehovah leaveth not His people, And His inheritance forsaketh not.

Poiché il Signore non ripudierà il suo popolo e non abbandonerà la sua eredità.

15 F or to righteousness judgment turneth back, And after it all the upright of heart,

Il giudizio sarà di nuovo conforme a giustizia e tutti i retti di cuore lo seguiranno.

16 W ho riseth up for me with evil doers? Who stationeth himself for me with workers of iniquity?

Chi sorgerà per me contro i malvagi? Chi sarà al mio fianco contro i malfattori?

17 U nless Jehovah a help to me, My soul had almost inhabited silence.

Se il Signore non fosse stato il mio aiuto, a quest’ora l’anima mia abiterebbe il luogo del silenzio.

18 I f I have said, `My foot hath slipped,' Thy kindness, O Jehovah, supporteth me.

Quando ho detto: «Il mio piede vacilla», la tua bontà, o Signore, mi ha sostenuto.

19 I n the abundance of my thoughts within me, Thy comforts delight my soul.

Quando ero turbato da grandi preoccupazioni, il tuo conforto ha alleviato l’anima mia.

20 I s a throne of mischief joined Thee? A framer of perverseness by statute?

Il trono dell’ingiustizia ti avrà forse come complice? Esso, che trama oppressioni in nome della legge?

21 T hey decree against the soul of the righteous, And innocent blood declare wicked.

Si avventano insieme contro l’anima del giusto e condannano il sangue innocente.

22 A nd Jehovah is for a high place to me, And my God for a rock -- my refuge,

Ma il Signore è il mio riparo, e il mio Dio è la rocca in cui mi rifugio.

23 A nd turneth back on them their iniquity, And in their wickedness cutteth them off; Jehovah our God doth cut them off!

Egli farà ricadere su di essi la loro malvagità e li distruggerà per la loro malizia; il Signore, il nostro Dio, li distruggerà.
