1 A nd now, to you this charge, O priests,

«Ora, quest’ordine è per voi, o sacerdoti!

2 I f ye hearken not, and if ye lay not to heart, To give honour to My name, said Jehovah of Hosts, I have sent against you the curse, And I have cursed your blessings, Yea, I have also cursed it, Because ye are not laying to heart.

Se non ascoltate e se non prendete a cuore di dar gloria al mio nome», dice il Signore degli eserciti, «io manderò su di voi la maledizione e maledirò le vostre benedizioni; anzi le ho già maledette, perché non prendete la cosa a cuore.

3 L o, I am pushing away before you the seed, And have scattered dung before your faces, Dung of your festivals, And it hath taken you away with it.

Ecco, io sgriderò le vostre sementi perché non producano, vi getterò degli escrementi in faccia, gli escrementi delle vittime offerte nelle vostre feste, e voi sarete portati fuori con essi.

4 A nd ye have known that I have sent unto you this charge, For My covenant being with Levi, Said Jehovah of Hosts.

Allora saprete che io vi ho dato quest’ordine perché sussista il mio patto con Levi», dice il Signore degli eserciti.

5 M y covenant hath been with him of life and of peace, And I make them to him a fear, and he doth fear Me, And because of My name he hath been affrighted.

«Il mio patto con lui era un patto di vita e di pace, cose che io gli diedi, perché mi temesse; egli mi temette e tremò davanti al mio nome.

6 T he law of truth hath been in his mouth, And perverseness hath not been found in his lips, In peace and in uprightness he walked with Me, And many he brought back from iniquity.

La legge di verità era nella sua bocca, non si trovava perversità sulle sue labbra; camminava con me nella pace e nella rettitudine, e molti ne allontanò dal male.

7 F or the lips of a priest preserve knowledge, And law they do seek from his mouth, For a messenger of Jehovah of Hosts he.

Infatti le labbra del sacerdote sono le custodi della scienza, e dalla sua bocca si ricerca la legge, perché egli è il messaggero del Signore degli eserciti.

8 A nd ye, ye have turned from the way, Ye have caused many to stumble in the law, Ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, Said Jehovah of Hosts.

Ma voi vi siete sviati, avete fatto inciampare molti nella legge, avete violato il patto di Levi», dice il Signore degli eserciti.

9 A nd I also, I have made you despised and low before all the people, Because ye are not keeping My ways, And are accepting persons in the law.

«Anch’io vi renderò spregevoli e abietti agli occhi di tutto il popolo, perché non osservate i miei insegnamenti e avete dei riguardi personali quando applicate la legge».

10 H ave we not all one father? Hath not our God prepared us? Wherefore do we deal treacherously, Each against his brother, To pollute the covenant of our fathers?

Non abbiamo forse tutti un solo padre? Non ci ha creati uno stesso Dio? Perché dunque siamo perfidi l’uno verso l’altro, così che profaniamo il patto dei nostri padri?

11 D ealt treacherously hath Judah, And abomination hath been done in Israel, and in Jerusalem, For polluted hath Judah the holy thing of Jehovah, That He hath loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

Giuda si è dimostrato infedele, e l’abominazione è stata commessa in Israele e a Gerusalemme; perché Giuda ha profanato ciò che è santo al Signore, ciò che egli ama, e ha sposato figlie di dèi stranieri.

12 C ut off doth Jehovah the man who doth it, Tempter and tempted -- from the tents of Jacob, Even he who is bringing nigh a present to Jehovah of Hosts.

A colui che fa questo, il Signore sterminerà dalle tende di Giacobbe chi veglia e chi risponde, e chi offre l’oblazione al Signore degli eserciti!

13 A nd this a second time ye do, Covering with tears the altar of Jehovah, With weeping and groaning, Because there is no more turning unto the present, Or receiving of a pleasing thing from your hand.

C’è un’altra cosa che voi fate: coprite l’altare del Signore di lacrime, di pianto e di gemiti, in modo che egli non badi più alle offerte e non le accetti con gradimento dalle vostre mani.

14 A nd ye have said, `Wherefore?' Because Jehovah hath testified between thee And the wife of thy youth, That thou hast dealt treacherously against her, And she thy companion, and thy covenant-wife.

Eppure dite: «Perché?» Perché il Signore è testimone fra te e la moglie della tua giovinezza, verso la quale agisci slealmente, sebbene essa sia la tua compagna, la moglie alla quale sei legato da un patto.

15 A nd He did not make one, And He hath the remnant of the Spirit. And what the one! He is seeking a godly seed. And ye have been watchful over your spirit, And with the wife of thy youth, None doth deal treacherously.

Ma, direte voi, non ce n’è uno che fece così? E tuttavia, lo Spirito rimase in lui. Ma perché quell’uno lo fece? Perché cercava la discendenza promessagli da Dio. Badate dunque al vostro spirito, e nessuno agisca slealmente verso la moglie della sua giovinezza.

16 F or hate sending away, said Jehovah, God of Israel, And He hath covered violence with his clothing, said Jehovah of Hosts, And ye have been watchful over your spirit, And ye do not deal treacherously.

«Poiché io odio il ripudio», dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele; «chi ripudia copre di violenza la sua veste», dice il Signore degli eserciti. Badate dunque al vostro spirito e non siate sleali. Purificazione di Giuda nel giorno del giudizio

17 Y e have wearied Jehovah with your words, And ye have said: `In what have we wearied Him?' In your saying: `Every evil-doer good in the eyes of Jehovah, And in them He is delighting,' Or, `Where the God of judgment?'

Voi stancate il Signore con le vostre parole, eppure dite: «In che modo lo stanchiamo?» Quando dite: «Chiunque fa il male è gradito al Signore, il quale si compiace di lui!» o quando dite: «Dov’è il Dio di giustizia?»
