1 T hen Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples,

¶ Entonces habló Jesús a la multitud y a sus discípulos,

2 s aying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;

diciendo: Sobre la cátedra de Moisés se sentaron los escribas y los fariseos.

3 a ll, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;

Así que, todo lo que os dijeren que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; mas no hagáis conforme a sus obras; porque dicen, y no la hacen.

4 f or they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.

Porque atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; mas ni aun con su dedo las quieren mover.

5 ` And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,

Antes, todas sus obras hacen para ser mirados de los hombres; porque ensanchan sus filacterias, y extienden los flecos de sus mantos;

6 t hey love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

y aman el primer lugar en las cenas, y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas;

7 a nd the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

y las salutaciones en las plazas, y ser llamados por los hombres Rabí, Rabí.

8 ` And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;

Mas vosotros, no queráis ser llamados Rabí; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo; y todos vosotros sois hermanos.

9 a nd ye may not call your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,

Y vuestro padre no llaméis a nadie en la tierra; porque uno es vuestro Padre, el cual está en los cielos.

10 n or may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.

Ni seáis llamados maestros; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo.

11 A nd the greater of you shall be your ministrant,

El que es el mayor de vosotros, sea vuestro siervo.

12 a nd whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Porque el que se ensalzare, será humillado; y el que se humillare, será ensalzado.

13 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.

¶ Mas ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque cerráis el Reino de los cielos delante de los hombres; que ni vosotros entráis, ni a los que están entrando dejáis entrar.

14 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.

¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque coméis las casas de las viudas, y por pretexto hacéis larga oración; por esto llevaréis mas grave juicio.

15 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.

¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque rodeáis el mar y la tierra por hacer un prosélito; y cuando fuere hecho, le hacéis hijo del infierno dos veces más que vosotros.

16 ` Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!

¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos! Que decís: Cualquiera que jurare por el Templo es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el oro del Templo, deudor es.

17 F ools and blind! for which greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?

¡Insensatos y ciegos! Porque ¿cuál es mayor, el oro, o el Templo que santifica al oro?

18 ` And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!

Y: Cualquiera que jurare por el altar, es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el presente que está sobre él, deudor es.

19 F ools and blind! for which greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?

¡Insensatos y ciegos! Porque, ¿cuál es mayor, el presente, o el altar que santifica al presente?

20 ` He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;

Pues el que jurare por el altar, jura por él, y por todo lo que está sobre él;

21 a nd he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;

y el que jurare por el Templo, jura por él, y por Aquel que habita en él;

22 a nd he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.

y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios, y por Aquel que está sentado sobre él.

23 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved to do, and those not to neglect.

¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque diezmáis la menta y el eneldo y el comino, y dejasteis lo que es lo más importante de la ley: el juicio y la misericordia y la fe; esto era necesario hacer, y no dejar lo otro.

24 ` Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.

¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito, mas tragáis el camello!

25 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.

¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque limpiáis lo que está de fuera del vaso o del plato; mas por dentro están llenos de robo y de incontinencia.

26 ` Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.

¡Fariseo ciego, limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera se haga limpio!

27 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;

¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera, a la verdad, se muestran hermosos, mas por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda suciedad.

28 s o also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Así también vosotros por fuera, a la verdad, os mostráis justos a los hombres; mas por dentro, llenos estáis de hipocresía e iniquidad.

29 ` Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,

¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas, y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,

30 a nd say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

y decís: Si estuviéramos en los días de nuestros padres, no hubiéramos sido sus compañeros en la sangre de los profetas.

31 S o that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;

Así que, testimonio dais a vosotros mismos, que sois hijos de aquellos que mataron a los profetas.

32 a nd ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.

¡Vosotros también llenad la medida de vuestros padres!

33 ` Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

¡Serpientes, generación de víboras! ¿Cómo evitaréis el juicio del infierno?

34 ` Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;

¶ Por tanto, he aquí, yo envío a vosotros profetas, y sabios, y escribas; y de ellos, a unos mataréis y colgaréis de un madero, y a otros de ellos azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas, y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad.

35 t hat on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:

Para que venga sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa que se ha derramado sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel el justo, hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Berequías, al cual matasteis entre el Templo y el altar.

36 v erily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.

De cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación.

37 ` Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.

¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas, y apedreas a los que son enviados a ti! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollos debajo de las alas, y no quisiste!

38 L o, left desolate to you is your house;

He aquí vuestra Casa os es dejada desierta.

39 f or I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'

Porque os digo que desde ahora no me veréis, hasta que digáis: Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor.
