1 S eeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,

¶ Habiendo muchos tratado de poner en orden la historia de las cosas que entre nosotros han sido ciertísimas,

2 a s they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, --

tal como nos lo enseñaron los que desde el principio lo vieron por sus ojos, y fueron ministros de la palabra;

3 i t seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,

me ha parecido también a mí, después de haber entendido todas las cosas desde el principio con diligencia, escribírtelas por orden, oh buen Teófilo,

4 t hat thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.

para que conozcas la seguridad de las cosas en las cuales has sido enseñado.

5 T here was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;

¶ Hubo en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, de la clase de Abías; y su mujer, de las hijas de Aarón, llamada Elisabet.

6 a nd they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,

Y eran ambos justos delante de Dios, andando sin reprensión en todos los mandamientos y estatutos del Señor.

7 a nd they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.

Y no tenían hijo, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran avanzados en días.

8 A nd it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,

Y aconteció que ejerciendo Zacarías el sacerdocio delante de Dios por el orden de su vez,

9 a ccording to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,

conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, salió en suerte a poner el incienso, entrando en el Templo del Señor.

10 a nd all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.

Y toda la multitud del pueblo estaba fuera orando a la hora del incienso.

11 A nd there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,

Y se le apareció un ángel del Señor puesto en pie a la derecha del altar del incienso.

12 a nd Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;

Y se turbó Zacarías viéndolo, y cayó temor sobre él.

13 a nd the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,

Mas el ángel le dijo: Zacarías, no temas; porque tu oración ha sido oída, y tu mujer Elisabet te engendrará un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Juan.

14 a nd there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,

Y tendrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se gozarán de su nacimiento.

15 f or he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;

Porque será grande delante de Dios, y no beberá vino ni sidra; y será lleno del Espíritu Santo, aun desde el vientre de su madre.

16 a nd many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,

Y a muchos de los hijos de Israel convertirá al Señor Dios de ellos.

17 a nd he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'

Porque él irá delante de él con el Espíritu y virtud de Elías, para convertir los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y los rebeldes a la prudencia de los justos, para aparejar al Señor un pueblo preparado.

18 A nd Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'

Y dijo Zacarías al ángel: ¿En qué conoceré esto? Porque yo soy viejo, y mi mujer avanzada en días.

19 A nd the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,

Y respondiendo el ángel le dijo: Yo soy Gabriel, que estoy delante de Dios; y soy enviado a hablarte, y a darte este evangelio.

20 a nd lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'

Y he aquí estarás mudo y no podrás hablar, hasta el día que esto sea hecho, por cuanto no creiste a mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su tiempo.

21 A nd the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,

Y el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías, y se maravillaban de que él se detuviera en el Templo.

22 a nd having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.

Y saliendo, no les podía hablar; y entendieron que había visto visión en el Templo; y él les hablaba por señas, y quedó mudo.

23 A nd it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,

Y fue, que cumplidos los días de su oficio, se vino a su casa.

24 a nd after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying --

Y después de aquellos días concibió su mujer Elisabet, y se encubrió por cinco meses, diciendo:

25 ` Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon, to take away my reproach among men.'

Porque el Señor me ha hecho así en los días en que miró para quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres.

26 A nd in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which Nazareth,

¶ Y al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado de Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, llamada Nazaret,

27 t o a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin Mary.

a una virgen desposada con un varón que se llamaba José, de la Casa de David; y el nombre de la virgen era María.

28 A nd the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord with thee; blessed thou among women;'

Y entrando el ángel en donde ella estaba, dijo: ¡Gozo hallas, amada! El Señor es contigo; bendita tú entre las mujeres.

29 a nd she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.

Mas ella, cuando le vio, se turbó de sus palabras, y pensaba qué salutación sería ésta.

30 A nd the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;

Entonces el ángel le dice: María, no temas, porque has hallado gracia cerca de Dios.

31 a nd lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;

Y he aquí, concebirás en tu vientre, y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús.

32 h e shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,

Este será grande, y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; y le dará el Señor Dios el trono de David su padre;

33 a nd he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'

y reinará en la Casa de Jacob por siempre; y de su Reino no habrá fin.

34 A nd Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'

Entonces María dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo será esto? Porque no conozco varón.

35 A nd the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;

Y respondiendo el ángel le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y la virtud del Altísimo te cubrirá; por lo cual también lo Santo que de ti nacerá, será llamado Hijo de Dios.

36 a nd lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;

Y he aquí, Elisabet tu parienta, también ella ha concebido hijo en su vejez; y éste es el sexto mes para ella que era llamada la estéril;

37 b ecause nothing shall be impossible with God.'

porque ninguna cosa es imposible para Dios.

38 A nd Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.

Entonces María dijo: He aquí la criada del Señor; cúmplase en mí conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se fue de su presencia.

39 A nd Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,

¶ En aquellos días levantándose María, fue a la montaña con prisa, a una ciudad de Judá;

40 a nd entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

y entró en casa de Zacarías, y saludó a Elisabet.

41 A nd it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

Y aconteció, que cuando oyó Elisabet la salutación de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre; y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo,

42 a nd spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed thou among women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb;

y exclamó a gran voz, y dijo: Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre.

43 a nd whence this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?

¿Y de dónde esto a mí, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?

44 f or, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;

Porque he aquí, cuando llegó la voz de tu salutación a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de alegría en mi vientre.

45 a nd happy she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'

Y bienaventurada la que creyó, porque se cumplirán las cosas que le fueron dichas de parte del Señor.

46 A nd Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,

Entonces María dijo: engrandece mi alma al Señor;

47 A nd my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,

Y mi espíritu se alegró en Dios mi Salud,

48 B ecause He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,

porque miró a la bajeza de su criada; Porque he aquí, desde ahora me dirán bienaventurada todas las generaciones.

49 F or He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy His name,

Porque me ha hecho grandes cosas el Poderoso; y santo es su Nombre.

50 A nd His kindness to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,

Y su misericordia de generación a generación a los que le temen.

51 H e did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,

Hizo valentía con su brazo; esparció los soberbios del pensamiento de su corazón.

52 H e brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,

Quitó los poderosos de los tronos, y levantó a los humildes.

53 T he hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,

A los hambrientos colmó de bienes; y a los ricos envió vacíos.

54 H e received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,

Recibió a Israel su criado, acordándose de la misericordia.

55 A s He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed -- to the age.'

Como habló a nuestros padres, a Abraham y a su simiente para siempre.

56 A nd Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.

Y se quedó María con ella como tres meses; después se volvió a su casa.

57 A nd to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,

¶ Y a Elisabet se le cumplió el tiempo de su alumbramiento, y dio a luz un hijo.

58 a nd the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.

Y oyeron los vecinos y los parientes que Dios había hecho con ella grande misericordia, y se alegraron con ella.

59 A nd it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,

Y aconteció, que al octavo día vinieron para circuncidar al niño; y le llamaban con el nombre de su padre, Zacarías.

60 a nd his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.'

Y respondiendo su madre, dijo: No; sino Juan será llamado.

61 A nd they said unto her -- `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'

Y le dijeron: ¿ Por qué ? Nadie hay en tu parentela que se llame con este nombre.

62 a nd they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,

Y hablaron por señas a su padre, cómo le quería llamar.

63 a nd having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;' and they did all wonder;

Y demandando la tablilla, escribió, diciendo: Juan es su nombre. Y todos se maravillaron.

64 a nd his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.

Y luego fue abierta su boca y su lengua, y habló bendiciendo a Dios.

65 A nd fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,

Y hubo temor sobre todos los vecinos de ellos; y en todas las montañas de Judea fueron divulgadas todas estas cosas.

66 a nd all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.

Y todos los que las oían, las conservaban en su corazón, diciendo: ¿Quién será este niño? Y la mano del Señor estaba con él.

67 A nd Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,

¶ Y Zacarías su padre fue lleno del Espíritu Santo, y profetizó, diciendo:

68 ` Blessed the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,

Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel, que ha visitado y hecho redención a su pueblo,

69 A nd did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,

y nos alzó el cuerno de salud en la Casa de David su siervo,

70 A s He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;

como habló por boca de los santos que fueron desde el principio, sus profetas:

71 S alvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,

Salvación de nuestros enemigos, y de mano de todos los que nos aborrecieron;

72 T o do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,

para hacer misericordia con nuestros padres, y acordándose de su santo testamento;

73 A n oath that He sware to Abraham our father,

del juramento que hizo a Abraham nuestro padre, que nos había de dar,

74 T o give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,

que sin temor librados de nuestros enemigos, le serviríamos

75 T o serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.

en santidad y en justicia delante de él, todos los días de nuestra vida.

76 A nd thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.

Y tú, niño: profeta del Altísimo serás llamado; porque irás delante de la faz del Señor, para aparejar sus caminos;

77 T o give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,

dando conocimiento de salud a su pueblo, para remisión de sus pecados,

78 T hrough the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,

por las entrañas de misericordia de nuestro Dios, con que nos visitó de lo alto el amanecer,

79 T o give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'

para dar luz a los que habitan en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte; para encaminar nuestros pies por camino de paz.

80 A nd the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

Y el niño crecía, y era confortado del Espíritu; y estuvo en los desiertos hasta el día que se mostró a Israel.
