1 A nd Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,

Existía entonces Jefté, galaadita, hombre valiente, hijo de una ramera, a la cual Galaad había engendrado un hijo.

2 a nd the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife's sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman thou.'

Y la mujer de Galaad también le había dado a luz hijos; los cuales cuando fueron grandes, echaron fuera a Jefté, diciéndole: No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de una mujer extraña.

3 A nd Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

Huyendo, pues, Jefté a causa de sus hermanos, habitó en tierra de Tob; y se juntaron con él hombres vacíos, los cuales salían con él.

4 A nd it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

¶ Y aconteció que después de algunos días los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.

5 a nd it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;

Y como los hijos de Amón tenían guerra contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron para traer a Jefté de tierra de Tob;

6 a nd they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.'

y dijeron a Jefté: Ven, y serás nuestro capitán, para que peleemos con los hijos de Amón.

7 A nd Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'

Y Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me habéis vosotros aborrecido, y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, venís ahora a mí cuando estáis en aflicción?

8 a nd the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Por esta misma causa volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros, y pelees contra los hijos de Amón, y nos seas cabeza de todos los que moramos en Galaad.

9 A nd Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?'

Jefté entonces dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y el SEÑOR los entregare delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestra cabeza?

10 A nd the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.'

Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: que el SEÑOR oiga entre nosotros, si no hiciéremos como tú dices.

11 A nd Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

Entonces Jefté vino con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió por su cabeza y príncipe; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del SEÑOR en Mizpa.

12 A nd Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.'

¶ Y envió Jefté embajadores al rey de los amonitas, diciendo: ¿Qué tienes tú conmigo que has venido a mí para hacer guerra en mi tierra?

13 A nd the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.'

Y el rey de los amonitas respondió a los embajadores de Jefté: Por cuanto Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subió de Egipto, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto, devuélvela ahora en paz.

14 A nd Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,

Y Jefté volvió a enviar otros embajadores al rey de los amonitas,

15 a nd saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,

diciéndole: Jefté ha dicho así: Israel no tomó tierra de Moab, ni tierra de los hijos de Amón;

16 f or in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,

mas subiendo Israel de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el mar Bermejo, y llegó a Cades.

17 a nd Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,

Entonces Israel envió embajadores al rey de Edom, diciendo: Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra. Mas el rey de Edom no los escuchó. Envió también al rey de Moab; el cual tampoco quiso; se quedó por tanto Israel en Cades.

18 a nd he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon the border of Moab.

Después, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y viniendo por donde nace el sol a la tierra de Moab, asentó su campamento al otro lado de Arnón, y no entraron por el término de Moab; porque Arnón término es de Moab.

19 ` And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,

Y envió Israel embajadores a Sehón rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.

20 a nd Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;

Mas Sehón no se fió de Israel para darle paso por su término; antes juntando Sehón todo su pueblo, puso campamento en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.

21 a nd Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,

Pero el SEÑOR Dios de Israel entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en mano de Israel, y los venció; y poseyó Israel toda la tierra del amorreo que habitaba en aquella tierra.

22 a nd they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.

Poseyeron también todo el término del amorreo desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

23 ` And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!

Así que el SEÑOR el Dios de Israel echó a los amorreos delante de su pueblo Israel; ¿y lo has de poseer tú?

24 T hat which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.

Si Quemos tu dios te echara alguno, ¿no lo poseerías tú? Así, poseeremos nosotros a todo aquel que echó el SEÑOR nuestro Dios de delante de nosotros.

25 ` And now, thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

¿Eres tú ahora en algo mejor que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Por ventura tuvo él contención contra Israel? ¿Por ventura hizo guerra contra ellos?

26 I n Israel's dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?

Además, Israel ha estado habitando por trescientos años en Hesbón y sus aldeas, en Aroer y sus aldeas, y todas las ciudades que están a los términos de Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis recobrado en ese tiempo?

27 A nd I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'

Así que, yo nada he pecado contra ti, mas tú haces mal conmigo haciéndome guerra; el SEÑOR, que es el juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.

28 A nd the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,

Mas el rey de los hijos de Amón no oyó las razones de Jefté que le envió.

29 a nd the Spirit of Jehovah is on Jephthah, and he passeth over Gilead and Manasseh, and passeth over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he hath passed over to the Bene-Ammon.

¶ Y el Espíritu del SEÑOR fue sobre Jefté; y pasó por Galaad y Manasés, y de allí pasó a Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.

30 A nd Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --

Y Jefté hizo voto al SEÑOR, diciendo: Si entregares a los amonitas en mis manos,

31 t hen it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'

cualquiera que me saliere a recibir de las puertas de mi casa, cuando volviere de los amonitas en paz, será del SEÑOR, y le ofreceré en holocausto.

32 A nd Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,

Pasó pues Jefté a los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y el SEÑOR los entregó en su mano.

33 a nd he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

Y los hirió de grandísimo estrago desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minit, veinte ciudades; y hasta la vega de las viñas. Así fueron dominados los amonitas delante de los hijos de Israel.

34 A nd Jephthah cometh into Mizpeh, unto his house, and lo, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and save her alone, he hath none, son or daughter.

Y volviendo Jefté a Mizpa a su casa, he aquí que su hija le salió a recibir con adufes y danzas, y era la sola, la única suya; no tenía fuera de ella otro hijo ni hija.

35 A nd it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.'

Y cuando él la vio, rompió sus vestidos diciendo: ¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido mucho, y tú eres de los que me afligen; porque yo he abierto mi boca al SEÑOR, y no podré retractarme.

36 A nd she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.'

Ella entonces le respondió: Padre mío, si has abierto tu boca al SEÑOR, haz de mí como salió de tu boca, pues que el SEÑOR te ha hecho venganza de tus enemigos los hijos de Amón.

37 A nd she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.'

Y volvió a decir a su padre: Concédeme esto: déjame por dos meses que vaya y descienda por los montes, y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.

38 A nd he saith, `Go;' and he sendeth her away two months, and she goeth, she and her friends, and she weepeth for her virginity on the hills;

El entonces dijo: Ve. Y la dejó por dos meses. Y ella fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

39 a nd it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

Pasados los dos meses volvió a su padre, e hizo de ella conforme al voto que había hecho. Y ella nunca conoció varón.

40 f rom time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.

De aquí fue la costumbre en Israel que de año en año iban las doncellas de Israel a endechar a la hija de Jefté, galaadita, cuatro días en el año.
