1 A nd Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

3 a nd Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

4 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah -- over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.'

L'Eterno quindi disse a Mosè: «Prendi tutti i capi del popolo e falli uccidere ed impiccare davanti all'Eterno all'aperto, in pieno sole, affinché l'ardente ira dell'Eterno si allontani da Israele».

5 A nd Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.'

Così Mosè disse ai giudici d'Israele: «Ciascuno di voi uccida dei suoi uomini coloro che si sono uniti a Baal-Peor».

6 A nd lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

Ed ecco uno dei figli d'Israele venne e presentò ai suoi fratelli una donna madianita, sotto gli occhi di Mosè e di tutta l'assemblea dei figli d'Israele, mentre essi stavano piangendo all'ingresso della tenda di convegno.

7 a nd Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

Al vedere questo, Finehas figlio di Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne si alzò in mezzo all'assemblea e prese in mano una lancia,

8 a nd goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman -- unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

seguì quindi l'uomo d'Israele nella sua alcova e li trafisse ambedue, l'uomo d'Israele e la donna, nel basso ventre. Così la calamità tra i figli d'Israele fu arrestata.

9 a nd the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

10 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

11 ` Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

«Finehas figlio di Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne, ha rimosso la mia ira dai figli d'Israele, perch'egli è stato animato della stessa mia gelosia in mezzo a loro; così nella mia gelosia non ho sterminato i figli d'Israele.

12 ` Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

Perciò digli: "Ecco, io stabilisco con lui un'alleanza di pace,

13 a nd it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

che sarà per lui e per la sua progenie dopo di lui l'alleanza di un sacerdozio perpetuo, perché ha avuto zelo per il suo DIO e ha fatto l'espiazione per i figli d'Israele"».

14 A nd the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

Or l'uomo d'Israele, che fu ucciso con la donna madianita, si chiamava Zimri, figlio di Salu, capo di una casa patriarcale dei Simeoniti.

15 a nd the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people -- of the house of a father in Midian he.

16 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Poi l'Eterno parlò a Mosè dicendo:

17 ` Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

«Molestate i Madianiti e attaccateli,

18 f or they are adversaries to you with their frauds, which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.'

perché essi vi hanno molestato con i loro artifici mediante i quali vi hanno sedotti nel caso di Peor e nel caso di Cozbi, figlia di un principe di Madian, loro sorella, che fu uccisa il giorno della calamità per il caso di Peor».
