1 A nd Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, saith unto Ahab, `Jehovah, God of Israel, liveth, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word.'

Elia, il Tishbita, uno degli abitanti di Galaad disse ad Achab: «Com'è vero che vive l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, alla cui presenza io sto, non ci sarà né rugiada né pioggia in questi anni, se non alla mia parola».

2 A nd the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

Poi la parola dell'Eterno gli fu indirizzata, dicendo:

3 ` Go from this; and thou hast turned for thee eastward, and been hidden by the brook Cherith, that on the front of the Jordan,

Vattene da qui, volgiti verso oriente e nasconditi presso il torrente Kerith, che si trova a est del Giordano.

4 a nd it hath been, from the brook thou dost drink, and the ravens I have commanded to sustain thee there.'

Tu berrai al torrente e io ho comandato ai corvi che ti diano da mangiare là».

5 A nd he goeth and doth according to the word of Jehovah, yea, he goeth and dwelleth by the brook Cherith, that on the front of the Jordan,

Così egli partí e fece secondo la parola dell'Eterno: andò e si stabilí presso il torrente Kerith, che si trova a est del Giordano.

6 a nd the ravens are bringing to him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and of the brook he drinketh.

I corvi gli portavano pane e carne al mattino e pane e carne alla sera, e beveva al torrente.

7 A nd it cometh to pass, at the end of days, that the brook drieth up, for there hath been no rain in the land,

Dopo un po' di tempo il torrente si secco, perchè non veniva pioggia sul paese.

8 a nd the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

Allora la parola dell'Eterno gli fu indirizzata dicendo:

9 ` Rise, go to Zarephath, that to Zidon, and thou hast dwelt there; lo, I have commanded there a widow woman to sustain thee.'

«Lèvati e va' a stabilirti a Sarepta dei Sidoni, perché là ho ordinato a una vedova di provvederti da mangiare».

10 A nd he riseth, and goeth to Zarephath, and cometh in unto the opening of the city, and lo there, a widow woman gathering sticks, and he calleth unto her, and saith, `Bring, I pray thee, to me, a little water in a vessel, and I drink.'

Egli dunque si levò e andò a Sarepta; come giunse alla porta della città, ecco lí una vedova che raccoglieva legna. Egli la chiamò e le disse: «Va' a prendermi un po' di acqua in un vaso perché possa bere».

11 A nd she goeth to bring, and he calleth unto her and saith, `Bring, I pray thee, to me a morsel of bread in thy hand.'

Mentre essa andava a prenderla la chiamò e disse: «Portami anche un pezzo di pane».

12 A nd she saith, `Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but the fulness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and lo, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it -- and died.'

Ella rispose: «Com'è vero che vive l'Eterno, il tuo DIO pane non ne ho, ma solo una manciata di farina in un vaso e un po' di olio in un orcio; ed ora sto raccogliendo due pezzi di legna, per andare a prepararla per me e per mio figlio; la mangeremo e poi moriremo».

13 A nd Elijah saith unto her, `Fear not, go, do according to thy word, only make for me thence a little cake, in the first place, and thou hast brought out to me; and for thee and for thy son make -- last;

Elia le disse: «Non temere; va' e fa' come hai detto, ma fanne prima una piccola focaccia per me e portamela; quindi ne farai per te e per tuo figlio.

14 f or thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, till the day of Jehovah's giving a shower on the face of the ground.'

Poiché cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: il vaso della farina non si esaurirà e l'orcio dell'olio non diminuirà, fino al giorno che l'Eterno manderà la pioggia sulla terra"».

15 A nd she goeth, and doth according to the word of Elijah, and she eateth, she and he, and her household -- days;

Cosí ella andò e fece secondo la parola di Elia; e mangiarono lei, Elia e la sua famiglia per parecchio tempo.

16 t he pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the dish of oil did not lack, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake by the hand of Elijah.

Il vaso della farina non si esaurí e l'orcio dell'olio non calò, secondo la parola che l'Eterno aveva pronunciato per mezzo di Elia.

17 A nd it cometh to pass, after these things, the son of the woman, mistress of the house, hath been sick, and his sickness is very severe till that no breath hath been left in him.

In seguito a queste cose, il figlio della donna che era la padrona di casa si ammalò; la sua malattia fu cosí grave, che non gli rimase piú soffio di vita.

18 A nd she saith unto Elijah, `What -- to me and to thee, O man of God? thou hast come unto me to cause mine iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!'

Ella allora disse ad Elia: «Che ho io da far con te o uomo di DIO? Sei forse venuto da me per farmi ricordare il mio peccato e per uccidermi il figlio?».

19 A nd he saith unto her, `Give to me thy son;' and he taketh him out of her bosom, and taketh him up unto the upper chamber where he is abiding, and layeth him on his own bed,

Egli le rispose: «Dammi tuo figlio». Cosí lo prese dal suo seno, lo portò nella stanza di sopra e lo coricò sul suo letto.

20 a nd crieth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Jehovah my God, also on the widow with whom I am sojourning hast Thou done evil -- to put her son to death?'

Poi invocò l'Eterno e disse «O Eterno, DIO mio, hai forse colpito di sventura anche questa vedova, che mi ospita, facendole morire il figlio?».

21 A nd he stretcheth himself out on the lad three times, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, `O Jehovah my God, let turn back, I pray Thee, the soul of this lad into his midst;'

Si distese quindi tre volte sul fanciullo e invocò l'Eterno, dicendo: «O Eterno DIO mio, ti prego, fa' che l'anima di questo fanciullo ritorni in lui».

22 a nd Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the lad turneth back into his midst, and he liveth.

L'Eterno esaudí la voce di Elia: l'anima del fanciullo ritornò in lui ed egli riprese vita.

23 A nd Elijah taketh the lad, and bringeth him down from the upper chamber of the house, and giveth him to his mother, and Elijah saith, `See, thy son liveth!'

Allora Elia prese il fanciullo, Io porto giú dalla stanza di sopra in casa e lo diede a sua madre dicendole: «Guarda, tuo figlio è vivo!».

24 A nd the woman saith unto Elijah, `Now, this I have known, that a man of God thou, and the word of Jehovah in thy mouth truth.'

Allora la donna disse ad Elia: «Ora riconosco che tu, sei un uomo di DIO e che la parola dell'Eterno sulla tua bocca è verità».
