1 T hus said Jehovah unto me, `Go, and thou hast got for thee a girdle of linen, and hast placed it on thy loins, and into water thou dost not cause it to enter:'

Cosí mi ha detto l'Eterno: «Va' a comprarti una cintura di lino e mettila sui tuoi lombi, ma non immergerla nell'acqua».

2 a nd I get the girdle, according to the word of Jehovah, and I place on my loins.

Così io comprai la cintura, secondo la parola dell'Eterno e me la misi sui lombi.

3 A nd there is a word of Jehovah unto me a second time, saying,

Poi la parola dell'Eterno mi fu rivolta una seconda volta, dicendo:

4 ` Take the girdle that thou hast got, that on thy loins, and rise, go to Phrat, and hide it there in a hole of the rock;

«Prendi la cintura che hai comprato e che hai sui tuoi lombi, levati, va' verso l'Eufrate e là nascondila nella fessura di una roccia».

5 a nd I go and hide it by Phrat, as Jehovah commanded me.

Io andai e la nascosi presso l'Eufrate, come l'Eterno mi aveva comandato.

6 A nd it cometh to pass, at the end of many days, that Jehovah saith unto me, `Rise, go to Phrat, and take thence the girdle, that I commanded thee to hide there;'

Dopo molti giorni avvenne che l'Eterno mi disse: «Levati, va' verso l'Eufrate e prendi di là la cintura che ti avevo comandato di nascondervi».

7 a nd I go to Phrat, and dig, and take the girdle from the place where I had hid it; and lo, the girdle hath been marred, it is not profitable for anything.

Io andai verso l'Eufrate, scavai e presi la cintura dal luogo in cui l'avevo nascosta. Ma ecco, la cintura era marcita, non era piú buona a nulla.

8 A nd there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying, `Thus said Jehovah:

Allora la parola dell'Eterno mi fu rivolta, dicendo:

9 T hus do I mar the excellency of Judah, And the great excellency of Jerusalem.

«Cosí dice l'Eterno: "In questo modo io distruggerò l'orgoglio di Giuda e il grande orgoglio di Gerusalemme.

10 T his evil people, who refuse to hear My words, Who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, And go after other gods to serve them, And to bow themselves to them, Yea it is -- as this girdle, that is not profitable for anything.

Questo popolo malvagio, che rifiuta di ascoltare le mie parole che cammina nella caparbietà del suo cuore e va dietro ad altri dèi per servirli e per prostrarsi davanti a loro, diventerà come questa cintura, che non è piú buona a nulla.

11 F or, as the girdle cleaveth unto the loins of a man, So I caused to cleave unto Me The whole house of Israel, And the whole house of Judah, an affirmation of Jehovah, To be to Me for a people, and for a name, And for praise, and for beauty, And they have not hearkened.

Poiché come la cintura aderisce ai lombi dell'uomo, cosí io avevo fatto aderire a me tutta la casa d'Israele e tutta la casa di Giuda», dice l'Eterno, «perché fossero mio popolo, per mia fama, lode e gloria; ma non hanno voluto ascoltare"».

12 A nd thou hast said unto them this word, Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, `Every bottle is full of wine,' And they have said unto thee: `Do we not certainly know that every bottle is full of wine?'

«Perciò tu dirai loro questa parola: "Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Ogni vaso sarà riempito di vino". Se poi ti diranno: "Non sappiamo forse che ogni vaso si riempie di vino?",

13 A nd thou hast said unto them, `Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am filling all the inhabitants of this land, And the kings who sit for David on his throne, And the priests, and the prophets, And all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, drunkenness,

tu risponderai loro: "Cosí dice l'Eterno: Ecco, io riempirò di ubriachezza tutti gli abitanti di questo paese: i re che siedono sul trono di Davide, i sacerdoti, i profeti e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

14 A nd have dashed them one against another, And the fathers and the sons together, An affirmation of Jehovah, I do not pity, nor spare, nor have I mercy, So as not to destroy them.

Li frantumerò l'uno contro l'altro i padri e i figli insieme"», dice l'Eterno. «Non avrò pietà non li risparmierò e non avrò alcuna compassione che mi impedirà di distruggerli».

15 H ear, and give ear -- be not haughty, For Jehovah hath spoken.

Ascoltate e porgete orecchio: Non insuperbite, perché l'Eterno ha parlato.

16 G ive ye to Jehovah your God honour, Before He doth cause darkness, And before your feet stumble on dark mountains, And ye have waited for light, And He hath made it for death-shade, And hath appointed for thick darkness.

Date gloria all'Eterno, il vostro DIO prima che faccia venire le tenebre e prima che i vostri piedi inciampino sui monti avvolti nel crepuscolo, perché mentre voi aspettate la luce, egli la cambi in ombra di morte e la trasformi in densa oscurità.

17 A nd if ye do not hear it, In secret places doth my soul weep, because of pride, Yea, it weepeth sore, And the tear cometh down mine eyes, For the flock of Jehovah hath been taken captive.

Ma se non ascoltate questo, l'anima mia piangerà in segreto a motivo del vostro orgoglio, i miei occhi piangeranno dirottamente e si scioglieranno in lacrime, perché il gregge dell'Eterno sarà condotto in cattività.

18 S ay to the king and to the mistress: Make yourselves low -- sit still, For come down have your principalities, The crown of your beauty.

Di' al re e alla regina madre: «Sedete piú in basso, perché il vostro dominio, la corona della vostra gloria, cadrà».

19 T he cities of the south have been shut up, And there is none opening, Judah hath been removed -- all of her, She hath been removed completely --

Le città del sud sono chiuse e nessuno le aprirà, tutto Giuda è condotto in cattività, è condotto in cattività interamente.

20 L ift up your eyes, and see those coming in from the north, Where the drove given to thee, thy beautiful flock?

Alzate i vostri occhi e guardate quelli che vengono dal nord; dov'è il gregge che ti era stato affidato, le tue belle pecore?

21 W hat dost thou say, when He looketh after thee? And thou -- thou hast taught them over thee -- leaders for head? Do not pangs seize thee as a travailing woman?

Cosa dirai quando ti punirà? Ma tu stessa hai insegnato loro ad essere capi e dominatori su di te. Non ti prenderanno forse le doglie come una donna che sta per partorire?

22 A nd when thou dost say in thy heart, `Wherefore have these met me?' For the abundance of thine iniquity Have thy skirts been uncovered, Have thy heels suffered violence.

E se dirai in cuor tuo: «Perché mi accadono queste cose?». Per la grandezza della tua iniquità i lembi della tua veste saranno scoperti e i tuoi calcagni messi a nudo.

23 D oth a Cushite change his skin? and a leopard his spots? Ye also are able to do good, who are accustomed to do evil.

Può un Etiope cambiare la sua pelle o una tigre le sue striature? Allo stesso modo potreste voi abituati a fare il male, fare il bene?

24 A nd I scatter them as stubble, Passing away, by a wind of the wilderness.

«Perciò li disperderò come stoppia portata via dal vento del deserto.

25 T his thy lot, the portion of thy measures from Me -- an affirmation of Jehovah, Because thou hast forgotten me, And dost trust in falsehood.

Questa è la tua sorte, la parte che ho misurato per te», dice l'Eterno, «perché mi hai dimenticato e hai confidato nella menzogna.

26 I also have made bare thy skirts before thy face, And thy shame hath been seen.

Perciò solleverò anch'io i lembi della veste sul viso, perché si veda la tua vergogna.

27 T hine adulteries, and thy neighings, The wickedness of thy whoredom, on heights in a field, I have seen thine abominations. Wo to thee, O Jerusalem, Thou art not cleansed, after when again?

Ho visto i tuoi adulteri, i tuoi nitriti, la dissolutezza della tua prostituzione, le tue abominazioni sulle colline, e nei campi. Guai a te, o Gerusalemme! Per quanto tempo rimarrai ancora immonda?».
