1 A nd there is a famine in the land, besides the first famine which was in the days of Abraham, and Isaac goeth unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

Or ci fu una carestia nel paese, oltre la precedente carestia che c'era stata ai tempi di Abrahamo. Poi Isacco andò da Abimelek, re dei Filistei a Gherar.

2 A nd Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith, `Go not down towards Egypt, tabernacle in the land concerning which I speak unto thee,

Allora l'Eterno gli apparve e gli disse: «Non scendere in Egitto; rimani nel paese che io ti dirò.

3 s ojourn in this land, and I am with thee, and bless thee, for to thee and to thy seed I give all these lands, and I have established the oath which I have sworn to Abraham thy father;

Soggiorna in questo paese e io sarò con te e ti benedirò, perché io darò a te e alla tua discendenza tutti questi paesi, e manterrò il giuramento che feci ad Abrahamo tuo padre,

4 a nd I have multiplied thy seed as stars of the heavens, and I have given to thy seed all these lands; and blessed themselves in thy seed have all nations of the earth;

e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza come le stelle "del cielo; darò alla tua discendenza tutti questi paesi, e tutte le nazioni della terra saranno benedette nella tua discendenza,

5 b ecause that Abraham hath hearkened to My voice, and keepeth My charge, My commands, My statutes, and My laws.'

Perché Abrahamo ubbidì alla mia voce e osservó i miei ordini, i miei comandamenti, i miei statuti e le mie leggi».

6 A nd Isaac dwelleth in Gerar;

Così Isacco dimorò in Gherar.

7 a nd men of the place ask him of his wife, and he saith, `She my sister:' for he hath been afraid to say, `My wife -- lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, for she of good appearance.'

Quando la gente del luogo gli faceva domande intorno a sua moglie, egli rispondeva: «E' mia sorella», perché aveva paura di dire: «E' mia moglie», poiché pensava: «Gli uomini del luogo potrebbero uccidermi a motivo di Rebecca, perché ella è di bell'aspetto».

8 A nd it cometh to pass, when the days have been prolonged to him there, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looketh through the window, and seeth, and lo, Isaac is playing with Rebekah his wife.

Quando aveva già trascorso parecchio tempo in quel luogo, ad Abimelek, re dei Filistei, capitò di guardare dalla finestra e vide Isacco che accarezzava Rebecca sua moglie.

9 A nd Abimelech calleth for Isaac, and saith, `Lo, she surely thy wife; and how hast thou said, She my sister?' and Isaac saith unto him, `Because I said, Lest I die for her.'

Allora Abimelek chiamò Isacco e gli disse: «Certamente costei è tua moglie; come mai hai tu detto: «E' mia sorella"?». Isacco rispose: «Perché dicevo: "Non vorrei morire a motivo di lei"».

10 A nd Abimelech saith, `What this thou hast done to us? as a little thing one of the people had lain with thy wife, and thou hadst brought upon us guilt;'

Abimelek disse: «Che cos'è questo che ci hai fatto? Qualcuno del popolo avrebbe potuto facilmente coricarsi con tua moglie, e tu ci avresti tirato addosso una gran colpa».

11 a nd Abimelech commandeth all the people, saying, `He who cometh against this man or against his wife, dying doth die.'

Così Abimelek diede quest'ordine a tutto il popolo: «Chiunque tocca quest'uomo o sua moglie sarà senz'altro messo a morte».

12 A nd Isaac soweth in that land, and findeth in that year a hundredfold, and Jehovah blesseth him;

Isacco seminò in quel paese e in quell'anno raccolse il centuplo; e l'Eterno lo benedisse.

13 a nd the man is great, and goeth on, going on and becoming great, till that he hath been very great,

Quest'uomo divenne grande e continuò a crescere fino a divenire straordinariamente grande.

14 a nd he hath possession of a flock, and possession of a herd, and an abundant service; and the Philistines envy him,

Egli venne a possedere greggi di pecore, mandrie di buoi e un gran numero di servi. Così i Filistei lo invidiarono,

15 a nd all the wells which his father's servants digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines have stopped them, and fill them with dust.

perciò i Filistei turarono, riempiendoli di terra, tutti i pozzi che i servi di suo padre avevano scavati, al tempo di Abrahamo suo padre.

16 A nd Abimelech saith unto Isaac, `Go from us; for thou hast become much mightier than we;'

Allora Abimelek disse a Isacco: «Vattene da noi, poiché tu sei molto piú potente di noi».

17 a nd Isaac goeth from thence, and encampeth in the valley of Gerar, and dwelleth there;

Così Isacco se ne andò di là e si accampò nella valle di Gherar, e là dimorò.

18 a nd Isaac turneth back, and diggeth the wells of water which they digged in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines do stop after the death of Abraham, and he calleth to them names according to the names which his father called them.

E Isacco scavò di nuovo i pozzi di acqua che erano stati scavati al tempo di Abrahamo suo padre, e che i Filistei avevano turati dopo la morte di Abrahamo; e pose loro gli stessi nomi che aveva loro posto suo padre.

19 A nd Isaac's servants dig in the valley, and find there a well of living water,

Poi i servi di Isacco scavarono nella valle e vi trovarono un pozzo di acqua viva.

20 a nd shepherds of Gerar strive with shepherds of Isaac, saying, `The water ours;' and he calleth the name of the well `Strife,' because they have striven habitually with him;

Ma i pastori di Gherar altercarono coi pastori d'Isacco, dicendo: «L'acqua è nostra». Ed egli chiamò il pozzo Esek, perché quelli avevano conteso con lui.

21 a nd they dig another well, and they strive also for it, and he calleth its name `Hatred.'

I servi scavarono quindi un altro pozzo, ma quelli altercarono anche per questo. E Isacco lo chiamò Sitnah.

22 A nd he removeth from thence, and diggeth another well, and they have not striven for it, and he calleth its name Enlargements, and saith, `For -- now hath Jehovah given enlargement to us, and we have been fruitful in the land.'

Allora egli se ne andò di là e scavò un altro pozzo per il quale quelli non altercarono. Ed egli lo chiamò Rehoboth, perché egli disse: «Ora l'Eterno ci ha messi al largo, e noi prospereremo nel paese».

23 A nd he goeth up from thence Beer-Sheba,

Poi di là Isacco salì a Beer-Sceba.

24 a nd Jehovah appeareth unto him during that night, and saith, `I the God of Abraham thy father, fear not, for I with thee, and have blessed thee, and have multiplied thy seed, because of Abraham My servant;'

E l'Eterno gli apparve quella stessa notte, e gli disse: «Io sono il DIO di Abrahamo tuo padre; non temere, perché io sono con te; ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza per amore di Abrahamo mio servo».

25 a nd he buildeth there an altar, and preacheth in the name of Jehovah, and stretcheth out there his tent, and there Isaac's servants dig a well.

Allora egli costruì in quel luogo un altare e invocò il nome dell'Eterno, e vi piantò la sua tenda. La i servi di Isacco scavarono un pozzo.

26 A nd Abimelech hath gone unto him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phichol head of his host;

Poi Abimelek da Gherar andò da lui con Ahuzzath, suo amico e con Pikol, capo del suo esercito.

27 a nd Isaac saith unto them, `Wherefore have ye come unto me, and ye have hated me, and ye send me away from you?'

E Isacco disse loro: «Perché siete venuti da me, dal momento che mi odiate e mi avete allontanato da voi».

28 A nd they say, `We have certainly seen that Jehovah hath been with thee, and we say, `Let there be, we pray thee, an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

Allora essi risposero: «Noi abbiamo chiaramente visto che l'Eterno è con te. Così abbiamo detto: "Si faccia ora un giuramento fra di noi, fra noi e te, e facciamo un'alleanza con te":

29 d o not evil with us, as we have not touched thee, and as we have only done good with thee, and send thee away in peace; thou now blessed of Jehovah.'

e cioè, che tu non ci farai alcun male, così come noi non ti abbiamo toccato e non ti abbiamo fatto altro che del bene, e ti abbiamo lasciato andare in pace. Tu sei ora il benedetto dell'Eterno».

30 A nd he maketh for them a banquet, and they eat and drink,

Così Isacco imbandì per loro un convito ed essi mangiarono e bevvero.

31 a nd rise early in the morning, and swear one to another, and Isaac sendeth them away, and they go from him in peace.

La mattina dopo si alzarono presto e si scambiarono un giuramento. Poi Isacco li accomiatò e quelli se ne andarono da lui in pace.

32 A nd it cometh to pass during that day that Isaac's servants come and declare to him concerning the circumstances of the well which they have digged, and say to him, `We have found water;'

Or avvenne che, in quello stesso giorno, i servi di Isacco gli vennero a dar notizia del pozzo che avevano scavato dicendogli: «Abbiamo trovato dell'acqua».

33 a nd he calleth it Shebah, therefore the name of the city Beer-Sheba, unto this day.

Ed egli lo chiamò Scibah. Per questo la città porta il nome di Beer-Sceba, fino al giorno d'oggi.

34 A nd Esau is a son of forty years, and he taketh a wife, Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite,

Quando Esaú ebbe quarant'anni, prese per moglie Judith, figlia di Beeri, lo Hitteo e Basemath, figlia di Elon, lo Hitteo.

35 a nd they are a bitterness of spirit to Isaac and to Rebekah.

Esse furono causa di profonda amarezza a Isacco e Rebecca.
