1 H earken, O isles, unto me, And attend, O peoples, from afar, Jehovah from the womb hath called me, From the bowels of my mother He hath made mention of my name.

Isole, ascoltatemi, e prestate attenzione, o popoli lontani. L'Eterno mi ha chiamato fin dal grembo materno, ha menzionato il mio nome fin dalle viscere di mia madre.

2 A nd he maketh my mouth as a sharp sword, In the shadow of His hand He hath hid me, And He maketh me for a clear arrow, In His quiver He hath hid me.

Ha reso la mia bocca come una spada tagliente, mi ha nascosto nell'ombra della sua mano, mi ha reso una freccia appuntita, mi ha riposto nella sua faretra.

3 A nd He saith to me, `My servant Thou art, O Israel, In whom I beautify Myself.'

Mi ha detto: «Tu sei il mio servo, Israele, in cui sarò glorificato».

4 A nd I said, `For a vain thing I laboured, For emptiness and vanity my power I consumed, But my judgment with Jehovah, And my wage with my God.

Ma io dicevo: «Invano ho faticato, per nulla e inutilmente ho speso la mia forza; certamente però il mio diritto è presso l'Eterno e la mia ricompensa presso il mio DIO».

5 A nd now, said Jehovah, who is forming me from the belly for a servant to Him, To bring back Jacob unto Him, (Though Israel is not gathered, Yet I am honoured in the eyes of Jehovah, And my God hath been my strength.)

E ora dice l'Eterno che mi ha formato fin dal grembo materno per essere suo servo, per ricondurre a lui Giacobbe e per radunare intorno a lui Israele (io sono onorato agli occhi dell'Eterno, e il mio DIO è la mia forza).

6 A nd He saith, `It hath been a light thing That thou art to Me for a servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And the preserved of Israel to bring back, And I have given thee for a light of nations, To be My salvation unto the end of the earth.'

Egli dice: «E' troppo poco che tu sia mio servo per rialzare le tribú di Giacobbe e per ricondurre gli scampati d'Israele. Ti ho stabilito come la luce delle nazioni, perché tu sia la mia salvezza fino alle estremità della terra».

7 T hus said Jehovah, Redeemer of Israel, His Holy One, To the despised in soul, To the abominated of a nation, To the servant of rulers: `Kings see, and have risen, princes, and worship, For the sake of Jehovah, who is faithful, The Holy of Israel, and He chooseth thee.'

Cosí dice l'Eterno, il Redentore d'Israele, il suo Santo, a colui che è disprezzato dagli uomini, al detestato dalla nazione, al servo dei potenti: «I re vedranno e si leveranno, i principi si prostreranno, a causa dell'Eterno che è fedele, il Santo d'Israele, che ti ha scelto».

8 T hus said Jehovah: `In a time of good pleasure I answered thee, And in a day of salvation I helped thee, And I keep thee, and give thee, For a covenant of the people, To establish the earth, To cause to inherit desolate inheritances.

Cosí dice l'Eterno: «Nel tempo della grazia io ti ho esaudito e nel giorno della salvezza ti ho aiutato, ti preserverò e ti farò l'alleanza del popolo, per far risorgere il paese, per rimetterli in possesso delle eredità devastate,

9 T o say to the bound, Go out, To those in darkness, Be uncovered. On the ways they feed, And in all high places is their pasture.

per dire ai prigionieri: "Uscite" e a quelli che sono nelle tenebre: "Mostratevi". Essi pascoleranno lungo le strade e su tutte le alture desolate avranno i loro pascoli.

10 T hey do not hunger, nor thirst, Nor smite them doth mirage and sun, For He who is pitying them doth lead them, And by fountains of waters doth tend them.

Non avranno fame né sete, non li colpirà piú né caldo né sole, perché colui che ha pietà di loro li guiderà e li condurrà alle sorgenti d'acqua.

11 A nd I have made all My mountains for a way, And My highways are lifted up.

Trasformerò tutti i miei monti in strade, e le mie strade maestre saranno elevate.

12 L o, these from afar come in, And lo, these from the north, and from the sea, And these from the land of Sinim.

Ecco, questi vengono da lontano; ecco, quelli dal nord e dall'est, e quelli dal paese di Sinim».

13 S ing, O heavens, and joy, O earth, And break forth, O mountains, with singing, For comforted hath Jehovah His people, And His afflicted ones He doth pity.

Giubilate, o cieli, rallegrati, o terra, e prorompete in grida di gioia, o monti, perché l'Eterno consola il suo popolo e ha compassione dei suoi afflitti.

14 A nd Zion saith, `Jehovah hath forsaken me, And my Lord hath forgotten me.'

Ma Sion ha detto: «L'Eterno mi ha abbandonato, il Signore mi ha dimenticato».

15 F orget doth a woman her suckling, The loved one -- the son of her womb? Yea, these forget -- but I -- I forget not thee.

«Può una donna dimenticare il bambino lattante e non aver compassione del figlio delle sue viscere? Anche se esse dovessero dimenticare, io non ti dimenticherò.

16 L o, on the palms of the hand I have graven thee, Thy walls before Me continually.

Ecco, io ti ho scolpita sulle palme delle mie mani, le tue mura mi stanno sempre davanti.

17 H astened have those building thee, Those destroying thee, and laying thee waste, go out from thee.

I tuoi figli si affretteranno, i tuoi distruttori e i tuoi devastatori si allontaneranno da te.

18 L ift up round about thine eyes and see, All of them have been gathered, They have come to thee. I live, an affirmation of Jehovah! Surely all of them as an ornament thou puttest on, And thou bindest them on like a bride.

Alza i tuoi occhi tutt'intorno e guarda. Tutti costoro si radunano e vengono a te, Com'è vero che io vivo, dice l'Eterno, ti rivestirai di tutti loro come di un ornamento e li legherai su di te come fa una sposa.

19 B ecause thy wastes, and thy desolate places, And the land of thy ruins, Surely now are straitened because of inhabitants, And far off have been those consuming thee.

Perciò i tuoi luoghi deserti e desolati e il tuo paese una volta colpito dalla distruzione saranno ora troppo angusti per gli abitanti, mentre quelli che ti divoravano saranno ben lontani.

20 A gain do the sons of thy bereavement say in thine ears: `The place is too strait for me, Come nigh to me -- and I dwell.'

I figli che avrai dopo quelli che hai perso, ti diranno all'orecchio: "Questo posto è troppo angusto per me; fammi piú spazio, perché mi possa stabilire

21 A nd thou hast said in thy heart: `Who hath begotten for me -- these? And I bereaved and gloomy, A captive, and turned aside, And these -- who hath nourished? Lo, I -- I was left by myself, these -- whence they?

Allora tu dirai in cuor tuo: "Chi ha generato costoro? Io ero infatti stata privata dei miei figli, ero sterile, esule e scacciata di qui e di là. Questi chi li ha allevati? Ecco, io ero rimasta sola, e questi dov'erano?"».

22 T hus said the Lord Jehovah: `Lo, I lift up unto nations My hand, And unto peoples I raise up Mine ensign, And they have brought thy sons in the bosom, And thy daughters on the shoulder are carried.

Cosí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «Ecco io leverò la mia mano verso le nazioni, alzerò la mia bandiera verso i popoli, allora riporteranno i tuoi figli in braccio, e le tue figlie saranno portate sulle spalle.

23 A nd kings have been thy nursing fathers, And their princesses thy nursing mothers; Face to the earth -- they bow down to thee, And the dust of thy feet they lick up, And thou hast known that I Jehovah, That those expecting Me are not ashamed.

I re saranno i tuoi padri adottivi e le loro regine saranno le tue nutrici, essi si prostreranno davanti a te con la faccia a terra e leccheranno la polvere dei tuoi piedi; cosí saprai che io sono l'Eterno e che coloro che sperano in me non saranno svergognati.

24 I s prey taken from the mighty? And the captive of the righteous delivered?

Si potrà forse strappare la preda al potente o liberare il prigioniero giusto?».

25 F or thus said Jehovah: Even the captive of the mighty is taken, And the prey of the terrible is delivered, And with thy striver I strive, and thy sons I save.

Sí, cosí dice l'Eterno: «Anche il prigioniero sarà portato via e la preda del tiranno sarà ricuperata. Io stesso combatterò con chi combatte con te e salverò i tuoi figli.

26 A nd I have caused thine oppressors to eat their own flesh, And as new wine they drink their own blood, And known have all flesh that I, Jehovah, Thy saviour, and thy redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob!'

Farò mangiare ai tuoi oppressori la loro stessa carne, e si inebrieranno col loro stesso sangue come col mosto. Allora ogni carne riconoscerà che io, l'Eterno, sono il tuo Salvatore, il tuo Redentore, il Potente di Giacobbe».
