1 L o, My servant, I take hold on him, My chosen one -- My soul hath accepted, I have put My Spirit upon him, Judgment to nations he bringeth forth.

«Ecco il mio servo, che io sostengo, il mio eletto in cui la mia anima si compiace. Ho posto il mio Spirito su di lui; egli porterà la giustizia alle nazioni.

2 H e doth not cry, nor lift up, Nor cause his voice to be heard, in the street.

Non griderà, non alzerà la voce, non farà udire la sua voce per le strade.

3 A bruised reed he breaketh not, And dim flax he quencheth not, To truth he bringeth forth judgment.

Non spezzerà la canna rotta e non spegnerà il lucignolo fumante; presenterà la giustizia secondo verità.

4 H e doth not become weak nor bruised, Till he setteth judgment in the earth, And for his law isles wait with hope.

Egli non verrà meno e non si scoraggerà, finché non avrà stabilito la giustizia sulla terra; e le isole aspetteranno la sua legge».

5 T hus said God, Jehovah, preparing The heavens, and stretching them out, Spreading out the earth and its productions, Giving breath to the people on it, And spirit to those walking in it.

Cosí dice Dio, l'Eterno, che ha creato i cieli e li ha spiegati, che ha disteso la terra e le cose che essa produce, che dà il respiro al popolo che è su di essa e la vita a quelli che in essa camminano:

6 I , Jehovah, did call thee in righteousness, And I lay hold on thy hand, and keep thee, And I give thee for a covenant of a people, And a light of nations.

«Io, l'Eterno, ti ho chiamato secondo giustizia e ti prenderò per mano, ti custodirò e ti farò l'alleanza del popolo e la luce delle nazioni,

7 T o open the eyes of the blind, To bring forth from prison the bound one, From the house of restraint those sitting in darkness.

per aprire gli occhi dei ciechi, per fare uscire dal carcere i prigionieri e dalla prigione quelli che giacciono nelle tenebre.

8 I Jehovah, this My name, And Mine honour to another I give not, Nor My praise to graven images.

Io sono l'Eterno, questo è il mio nome; non darò la mia gloria ad alcun altro né la mia lode alle immagini scolpite.

9 T he former things, lo, have come, And new things I am declaring, Before they spring up I cause you to hear.

Ecco, le cose di prima sono avvenute e ora vi annuncio cose nuove; io ve le faccio conoscere prima che germoglino».

10 S ing to Jehovah a new song, His praise from the end of the earth, Ye who are going down to the sea, and its fulness, Isles, and their inhabitants.

Cantate all'Eterno un cantico nuovo, la sua lode dalle estremità della terra, o voi che scendete in mare, e ciò che esso contiene, le isole e i loro abitanti.

11 T he wilderness and its cities do lift up, The villages Kedar doth inhabit, Sing do the inhabitants of Sela, From the top of mountains they cry.

Il deserto e le sue città elevino la loro voce, insieme ai villaggi in cui abitano quelli di Kedar. Esultino gli abitanti di Sela, mandino grida dalla cima dei monti.

12 T hey ascribe to Jehovah honour, And His praise in the isles they declare.

Diano gloria all'Eterno, proclamino la sua lode nelle isole.

13 J ehovah as a mighty one goeth forth. As a man of war He stirreth up zeal, He crieth, yea, He shrieketh, Against His enemies He showeth Himself mighty.

L'Eterno avanzerà come un eroe, ecciterà il suo ardore come un guerriero; manderà un grido, sí, un grido lacerante trionferà sui suoi nemici.

14 I have kept silent from of old, I keep silent, I refrain myself, As a travailing woman I cry out, I desolate and swallow up together.

«Per lungo tempo sono stato in silenzio, ho taciuto, mi sono contenuto; ma ora griderò come una donna che ha le doglie di parto, respirerò affannosamente e sbufferò insieme.

15 I make waste mountains and hills, And all their herbs I dry up, And I have made rivers become isles, And ponds I dry up.

Devasterò monti e colli e farò seccare tutte le piante verdi; ridurrò i fiumi in isole e asciugherò gli stagni.

16 A nd I have caused the blind to go, In a way they have not known, In paths they have not known I cause them to tread, I make a dark place before them become light, And unlevelled places become a plain, These the things I have done to them, And I have not forsaken them.

Farò camminare i ciechi per una via che non conoscevano e li condurrò per sentieri sconosciuti; cambierò davanti a loro le tenebre in luce e i luoghi tortuosi in pianura. Queste cose farò per loro e non li abbandonerò.

17 R emoved backward -- utterly ashamed, Are those trusting in a graven image, Those saying to a molten image, `Ye our gods.'

Volgeranno le spalle pieni di vergogna quelli che confidano nelle immagini scolpite e dicono alle immagini fuse: "Voi siete i nostri dèi!"

18 Y e deaf, hear; and ye blind, look to see.

Sordi, ascoltate; ciechi, guardate e vedete!

19 W ho blind but My servant? And deaf as My messenger I send? Who blind as he who is at peace, Yea, blind, as the servant of Jehovah?

Chi è cieco, se non il mio servo, o sordo come il mio messaggero che invio? Chi è cieco come colui che è in pace con me, cieco come il servo dell'Eterno?

20 S eeing many things, and thou observest not, Opening ears, and he heareth not.

Hai visto molte cose, ma senza prestarvi attenzione; le tue orecchie erano aperte, ma non hai udito nulla».

21 J ehovah hath delight for the sake of His righteousness, He magnifieth law, and maketh honourable.

L'Eterno si è compiaciuto per amore della sua giustizia; renderà la sua legge grande e magnifica.

22 A nd this a people seized and spoiled, Snared in holes -- all of them, And in houses of restraint they were hidden, They have been for a prey, And there is no deliverer, A spoil, and none is saying, `Restore.'

Ma questo è un popolo derubato e spogliato; sono tutti presi nei lacci in prigioni sotterranee e rinchiusi in carceri. Sono abbandonati al saccheggio, ma nessuno li ha liberati; spogliati, ma nessuno ha detto: «Restituisci!».

23 W ho among you giveth ear this? Attendeth, and heareth afterwards.

Chi di voi presterà orecchio a questo? Chi farà attenzione e ascolterà in avvenire?

24 W ho hath given Jacob for a spoil, And Israel to the spoilers? Is it not Jehovah -- He against whom we sinned? Yea, they have not been willing in His ways to walk, Nor have they hearkened to His law.

Chi ha abbandonato Giacobbe al saccheggio e Israele, ai predoni? Non è forse stato l'Eterno, contro il quale abbiamo peccato? Essi infatti non hanno voluto camminare nelle sue vie e non hanno ubbidito alla sua legge.

25 A nd He poureth on him fury, His anger, and the strength of battle, And it setteth him on fire round about, And he hath not known, And it burneth against him, and he layeth it not to heart!

Perciò egli ha riversato su di lui l'ardore della sua ira e la violenza della guerra, che lo ha avvolto nelle fiamme tutt'intorno senza che se ne rendesse conto; l'ha consumato, ma egli non ha preso la cosa a cuore.
