1 A fter these things and this truth, come hath Sennacherib king of Asshur, yea, he cometh in to Judah, and encampeth against the cities of the bulwarks, and saith to rend them unto himself.

Dopo queste cose e questi atti di fedeltà di Ezechia, Sennacherib, re di Assiria, venne, entrò in Giuda e cinse d'assedio le città fortificate, con l'intenzione d'impadronirsene.

2 A nd Hezekiah seeth that Sennacherib hath come, and his face to the battle against Jerusalem,

Quando Ezechia vide che Sennacherib era giunto con il proposito di attaccare Gerusalemme,

3 a nd he taketh counsel with his heads and his mighty ones, to stop the waters of the fountains that at the outside of the city -- and they help him,

decise con i suoi capi e con i suoi uomini valorosi di chiudere le acque delle sorgenti che erano fuori della città; ed essi gli prestarono aiuto.

4 a nd much people are gathered, and they stop all the fountains and the brook that is rushing into the midst of the land, saying, `Why do the kings of Asshur come, and have found much water?'

Cosí si radunò un gran numero di gente e chiusero tutte le sorgenti e il torrente, che scorreva attraverso il paese, dicendo: «Perché il re di Assiria dovrebbe venire e trovare acqua in abbondanza?».

5 A nd he strengtheneth himself, and buildeth the whole of the wall that is broken, and causeth to ascend unto the towers, and at the outside of the wall another, and strengtheneth Millo, the city of David, and maketh darts in abundance, and shields.

Ezechia allora prese coraggio, ricostruí tutte le mura diroccate, vi eresse torri e al di fuori costruí un muro esterno; fortificò pure Millo nella città di Davide e fece fare un gran numero di lance e scudi.

6 A nd he putteth heads of war over the people, and gathereth them unto him, unto the broad place of a gate of the city, and speaketh unto their heart, saying,

Stabilí dei capi militari sopra il popolo, li riuní presso di sé nella piazza della città e parlò al loro cuore, dicendo:

7 ` Be strong and courageous, be not afraid, nor be cast down from the face of the king of Asshur, and from the face of all the multitude that with him, for with us more than with him.

«Siate forti e coraggiosi! Non temete e non sgomentatevi davanti al re di Assiria e davanti alla moltitudine che è insieme a lui, perché con noi c'e uno piú grande che con lui.

8 W ith him an arm of flesh, and with us Jehovah our God, to help us, and to fight our battles;' and the people are supported by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

Con lui vi è un braccio di carne, ma con noi vi è l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, per soccorrerci e per combattere le nostre battaglie» Il popolo fu rassicurato dalle parole di Ezechia, re di Giuda.

9 A fter this hath Sennacherib king of Asshur sent his servants to Jerusalem -- and he by Lachish, and all his power with him -- against Hezekiah king of Judah, and against all Judah, who in Jerusalem, saying,

Dopo questo Sennacherib, re di Assiria, mentre si trovava di fronte a Lakish con tutte le sue forze, mandò i suoi servi a Gerusalemme per dire a Ezechia, re di Giuda, e a tutti quei di Giuda che si trovavano a Gerusalemme:

10 ` Thus said Sennacherib king of Asshur, On what are ye trusting and abiding in the bulwark, in Jerusalem?

«Cosí parla Sennacherib, re degli Assiri: In che cosa confidate per rimanere assediati in Gerusalemme?

11 ` Is not Hezekiah persuading you, to give you up to die by famine, and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God doth deliver us from the hand of the king of Asshur?

Non sta Ezechia ingannandovi per farvi morire di fame e di sete, dicendo: "L'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci libererà dalle mani del re di Assiria"?

12 H ath not Hezekiah himself turned aside His high places, and His altars, and speaketh to Judah and to Jerusalem, saying, Before one altar ye bow yourselves, and on it ye make perfume?

Non ha forse lo stesso Ezechia rimosso i suoi alti luoghi e i suoi altari, dicendo a Giuda e a Gerusalemme: "Voi adorerete davanti a un solo altare e su di esso offrirete incenso"?

13 ` Do ye not know what I have done -- I and my fathers -- to all peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands at all able to deliver their land out of my hand?

Non sapete ciò che io e i miei padri abbiamo fatto a tutti i popoli degli altri paesi? Gli dèi delle nazioni di quei paesi sono stati in qualche modo capaci di liberare i loro paesi dalla mia mano?

14 W ho among all the gods of these nations whom my fathers have devoted to destruction he who hath been able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God is able to deliver you out of my hand?

Tra tutti gli dèi di queste nazioni che i miei padri hanno votato allo sterminio, chi mai ha potuto liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano? Come potrà quindi il vostro DIO liberarvi dalla mia mano?

15 ` And, now, let not Hezekiah lift you up, nor persuade you thus, nor give credence to him, for no god of any nation and kingdom is able to deliver his people from my hand, and from the hand of my fathers: also, surely your God doth not deliver you from my hand!'

Ora perciò non lasciate che Ezechia vi inganni e vi seduca in questo modo; non prestategli fede! Poiché nessun dio di alcuna nazione o regno ha potuto liberare il suo popolo dalla mia mano o dalla mano dei miei padri, tanto meno il vostro DIO potrà liberarvi dalla mia mano!».

16 A nd again have his servants spoken against Jehovah God, and against Hezekiah His servant,

I suoi servi parlarono ancora contro l'Eterno DIO e contro il suo servo Ezechia.

17 a nd letters he hath written to give reproach to Jehovah, God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, `As the gods of the nations of the lands that have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah doth not deliver His people from my hand.'

Sennacherib scrisse pure lettere, per insultare l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, e per parlare contro di lui, dicendo: «Come gli dèi delle nazioni degli altri paesi non hanno liberato i loro popoli dalla mia mano cosí neppure il DIO di Ezechia libererà il suo popolo dalla mia mano».

18 A nd they call with a great voice Jewish, against the people of Jerusalem who on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them, that they may capture the city,

Essi gridarono ad alta voce in lingua giudaica rivolgendosi al popolo di Gerusalemme, che stava sulle mura, per spaventarlo e atterrirlo, e cosí impadronirsi della città.

19 a nd they speak against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the peoples of the land -- work of the hands of man.

Essi parlarono contro il DIO di Gerusalemme come contro gli dèi dei popoli della terra, che sono opera di mano d'uomo.

20 A nd Hezekiah the king prayeth, and Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, concerning this, and they cry to the heavens,

Ma il re Ezechia e il profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, pregarono a questo proposito e gridarono al cielo.

21 a nd Jehovah sendeth a messenger, and cutteth off every mighty one of valour -- both leader and head -- in the camp of the king of Asshur, and he turneth back with shame of face to his land, and entereth the house of his god, and those coming out of his bowels have caused him to fall there by the sword.

Allora l'Eterno mandò un angelo, che sterminò tutti gli uomini forti e valorosi, i principi e i capi nell'accampamento del re di Assiria. Questi tornò al suo paese coperto di vergogna; entrò quindi nel tempio del suo dio, dove i suoi stessi figli lo uccisero di spada.

22 A nd Jehovah saveth Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Asshur, and from the hand of all, and He leadeth them round about;

Cosí l'Eterno salvò Ezechia e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme dalla mano di Sennacherib, re di Assiria, e dalla mano di tutti gli altri e li protesse tutt'intorno.

23 a nd many are bringing in an offering to Jehovah, to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, and he is lifted up before the eyes of all the nations after this.

Molti portarono offerte all'Eterno a Gerusalemme e oggetti preziosi a Ezechia, re di Giuda, che da allora fu magnificato agli occhi di tutte le nazioni.

24 I n those days hath Hezekiah been sick even unto death, and he prayeth unto Jehovah, and He speaketh to him, and a wonder hath appointed for him;

In quei giorni Ezechia si ammalò mortalmente Egli pregò l'Eterno, che gli parlò e gli diede un segno.

25 a nd Hezekiah hath not returned according to the deed unto him, for his heart hath been lofty, and there is wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem;

Ma Ezechia non corrispose al beneficio a lui fatto, perché il suo cuore si era inorgoglito, perciò su di lui, su Giuda e su Gerusalemme si riversò l'ira dell'Eterno.

26 a nd Hezekiah is humbled for the loftiness of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the wrath of Jehovah hath not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

Poi Ezechia si umiliò dell'orgoglio del suo cuore, lui e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme; perciò l'ira dell'Eterno non venne sopra di loro durante la vita di Ezechia.

27 A nd Hezekiah hath riches and honour very much, and treasures he hath made to himself of silver, and of gold, and of precious stone, and of spices, and of shields, and of all of desirable vessels,

Ezechia ebbe immense ricchezze e onore. Egli si fece depositi per argento, oro, pietre preziose, aromi, scudi, e per ogni genere di oggetti preziosi,

28 a nd storehouses for the increase of corn, and new wine, and oil, and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and herds for stalls;

magazzini per i prodotti di grano, vino e olio, stalle per ogni genere di bestiame e ovili per le pecore.

29 a nd cities he hath made for himself, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance, for God hath given to him very much substance.

Inoltre si costruí città ed ebbe un gran numero di greggi e mandrie, perché DIO gli aveva dato grandissime ricchezze.

30 A nd Hezekiah himself hath stopped the upper source of the waters of Gihon, and directeth them beneath to the west of the city of David, and Hezekiah prospereth in all his work;

Fu Ezechia stesso a chiudere la sorgente superiore delle acque di Ghihon e a incanalarle in basso al lato occidentale della città di Davide. Ezechia riuscí in tutte le sue imprese.

31 a nd so with the ambassadors of the heads of Babylon, those sending unto him to inquire of the wonder that hath been in the land, God hath left him to try him, to know all in his heart,

Ma quando i capi di Babilonia gli inviarono messaggeri per informarsi del prodigio che era avvenuto nel paese, DIO lo abbandonò per metterlo alla prova e conoscere tutto ciò che era nel suo cuore.

32 A nd the rest of the matters of Hezekiah, and his kind acts, lo, they are written in the vision of Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, on the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

Il resto delle gesta di Ezechia e le sue opere di bene sono scritte nella visione del profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, e nel libro dei re di Giuda e d'Israele.

33 A nd Hezekiah lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in the uppermost of the graves of the sons of David, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have done honour to him at his death, and reign doth Manasseh his son in his stead.

Poi Ezechia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto sulla salita dei sepolcri dei figli di Davide; alla sua morte tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme gli resero onore. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Manasse.
