1 A nd Jacob dwelleth in the land of his father's sojournings -- in the land of Canaan.

Or Giacobbe dimorò nel paese dove suo padre aveva soggiornato, nel paese di Canaan.

2 T hese births of Jacob: Joseph, a son of seventeen years, hath been enjoying himself with his brethren among the flock, (and he a youth,) with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and Joseph bringeth in an account of their evil unto their father.

Questa è la discendenza di Giacobbe. Giuseppe, all'età di diciassette anni, pascolava il gregge coi suoi fratelli; il giovinetto stava con i figli di Bilhah e con i figli di Zilpah mogli di suo padre. Or Giuseppe riferì al loro padre la mala fama che circolava sul loro conto.

3 A nd Israel hath loved Joseph more than any of his sons, for he a son of his old age, and hath made for him a long coat;

Or Israele amava Giuseppe piú di tutti i suoi figli, perché era il figlio della sua vecchiaia; e gli fece una veste lunga fino ai piedi.

4 a nd his brethren see that their father hath loved him more than any of his brethren, and they hate him, and have not been able to speak him peaceably.

Ma i suoi fratelli, vedendo che il loro padre lo amava piú di tutti gli altri fratelli, presero ad odiarlo e non gli potevano parlare in modo amichevole.

5 A nd Joseph dreameth a dream, and declareth to his brethren, and they add still more to hate him.

Or Giuseppe fece un sogno e lo raccontò ai suoi fratelli; e questi lo odiarono ancora di piú.

6 A nd he saith unto them, `Hear ye, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

Egli disse loro: «Udite, vi prego, il sogno che ho fatto.

7 t hat, lo, we are binding bundles in the midst of the field, and lo, my bundle hath arisen, and hath also stood up, and lo, your bundles are round about, and bow themselves to my bundle.'

Noi stavamo legando dei covoni in mezzo al campo, quand'ecco il mio covone si drizzò e rimase dritto, mentre i vostri covoni si raccolsero e si inchinarono davanti al mio covone».

8 A nd his brethren say to him, `Dost thou certainly reign over us? dost thou certainly rule over us?' and they add still more to hate him, for his dreams, and for his words.

Allora i suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Dovrai tu regnare su di noi, o dovrai tu veramente dominarci?». E lo odiarono ancor di piú, a motivo dei suoi sogni e delle sue parole.

9 A nd he dreameth yet another dream, and recounteth it to his brethren, and saith, `Lo, I have dreamed a dream again, and lo, the sun and the moon, and eleven stars, are bowing themselves to me.'

Egli fece ancora un altro sogno e lo raccontò ai suoi fratelli, dicendo: «Ho fatto un altro sogno! Ed ecco il sole, la luna e undici stelle si inchinavano davanti a me».

10 A nd he recounteth unto his father, and unto his brethren; and his father pusheth against him, and saith to him, `What this dream which thou hast dreamt? do we certainly come -- I, and thy mother, and thy brethren -- to bow ourselves to thee, to the earth?'

Egli lo raccontò a suo padre e ai suoi fratelli; e suo padre lo rimproverò e gli disse: «Cosa significa questo sogno che hai fatto? Dovremo proprio io, tua madre e i tuoi fratelli venire a inchinarci a terra davanti a te?».

11 a nd his brethren are zealous against him, and his father hath watched the matter.

E i suoi fratelli gli portavano invidia ma suo padre serbava la cosa dentro di sé,

12 A nd his brethren go to feed the flock of their father in Shechem,

Or i fratelli di Giuseppe erano a pascolare il gregge del padre a Sichem.

13 a nd Israel saith unto Joseph, `Are not thy brethren feeding in Shechem? come, and I send thee unto them;' and he saith to him, `Here I;'

E Israele disse a Giuseppe: «I tuoi fratelli non stanno forse pascolando il gregge a Sichem? Vieni, che ti manderò da loro». Egli rispose: «Eccomi».

14 a nd he saith to him, `Go, I pray thee, see the peace of thy brethren, and the peace of the flock, and bring me back word;' and he sendeth him from the valley of Hebron, and he cometh to Shechem.

Israele gli disse: «Va' a vedere se i tuoi fratelli stanno bene e se il gregge va bene, e poi torna a riferirmelo». Così lo mandò dalla valle di Hebron, ed egli arrivò a Sichem.

15 A nd a man findeth him, and lo, he is wandering in the field, and the man asketh him, saying, `What seekest thou?'

Mentre egli vagava per la campagna, un uomo lo trovò e gli chiese: «Che cerchi?».

16 a nd he saith, `My brethren I am seeking, declare to me, I pray thee, where they are feeding?'

Egli rispose: «Sto cercando i miei fratelli; per favore, dimmi dove si trovano a pascolare».

17 A nd the man saith, `They have journeyed from this, for I have heard some saying, Let us go to Dothan,' and Joseph goeth after his brethren, and findeth them in Dothan.

Quell'uomo gli disse: «Son partiti di qui, perché li ho sentiti dire: "Andiamo a Dothan"». Allora Giuseppe andò in cerca dei suoi fratelli, e li trovò a Dothan.

18 A nd they see him from afar, even before he draweth near unto them, and they conspire against him to put him to death.

Essi lo scorsero da lontano e, prima che fosse loro vicino, complottarono contro di lui per ucciderlo.

19 A nd they say one unto another, `Lo, this man of the dreams cometh;

E dissero l'un l'altro: «Ecco che arriva il sognatore!

20 a nd now, come, and we slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and have said, An evil beast hath devoured him; and we see what his dreams are.'

Ora dunque venite, uccidiamolo e gettiamolo in un pozzo; diremo poi che una bestia feroce lo ha divorato; così vedremo che ne sarà dei suoi sogni».

21 A nd Reuben heareth, and delivereth him out of their hand, and saith, `Let us not smite the life;'

Ruben udì questo e decise di liberarlo dalle loro mani, e disse: «Non gli togliamo la vita».

22 a nd Reuben saith unto them, `Shed no blood; cast him into this pit which in the wilderness, and put not forth a hand upon him,' -- in order to deliver him out of their hand, to bring him back unto his father.

Poi Ruben aggiunse: «Non spargete sangue, ma gettatelo in questo pozzo nel deserto e non colpitelo di vostra mano». Diceva così, per liberarlo dalle loro mani e riportarlo a suo padre.

23 A nd it cometh to pass, when Joseph hath come unto his brethren, that they strip Joseph of his coat, the long coat which upon him,

Quando Giuseppe fu giunto presso i suoi fratelli, lo spogliarono della sua veste, della lunga veste fino ai piedi che indossava;

24 a nd take him and cast him into the pit, and the pit empty, there is no water in it.

poi lo presero e lo gettarono nel pozzo. Or il pozzo era vuoto, senz'acqua dentro.

25 A nd they sit down to eat bread, and they lift up their eyes, and look, and lo, a company of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, and their camels bearing spices, and balm, and myrrh, going to take down to Egypt.

Poi si misero a sedere per prendere cibo; ma, alzando gli occhi, ecco videro una carovana di Ismaeliti, che veniva da Galaad coi loro cammelli carichi di spezie, di balsamo e di mirra, in viaggio per portarli in Egitto.

26 A nd Judah saith unto his brethren, `What gain when we slay our brother, and have concealed his blood?

Allora Giuda disse ai suoi fratelli: Che guadagno avremo a uccidere nostro fratello e a nascondere il suo sangue?

27 C ome, and we sell him to the Ishmaelites, and our hands are not on him, for he our brother -- our flesh;' and his brethren hearken.

Venite, vendiamolo agli Ismaeliti e non lo colpisca la nostra mano, perché è nostro fratello, nostra carne». E i suoi fratelli gli diedero ascolto.

28 A nd Midianite merchantmen pass by and they draw out and bring up Joseph out of the pit, and sell Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silverlings, and they bring Joseph into Egypt.

Come quei mercanti Madianiti passavano, essi sollevarono e tirarono Giuseppe fuori dal pozzo e lo vendettero agli Ismaeliti per venti sicli d'argento. E questi condussero Giuseppe in Egitto.

29 A nd Reuben returneth unto the pit, and lo, Joseph is not in the pit, and he rendeth his garments,

Or Ruben tornò al pozzo, ed ecco, Giuseppe non era piú nel pozzo. Allora egli si stracciò le vesti.

30 a nd he returneth unto his brethren, and saith, `The lad is not, and I -- whither am I going?'

Poi tornò dai suoi fratelli e disse: Il fanciullo non c'è piú; e io, dove andrò io?».

31 A nd they take the coat of Joseph, and slaughter a kid of the goats, and dip the coat in the blood,

Così essi presero la lunga veste di Giuseppe, uccisero un capro e immersero la veste nel sangue.

32 a nd send the long coat, and they bring in unto their father, and say, `This have we found; discern, we pray thee, whether it thy son's coat or not?'

Poi portarono la lunga veste dal padre e dissero: «Abbiamo trovato questo; vedi un po' se è la veste di tuo figlio».

33 A nd he discerneth it, and saith, `My son's coat! an evil beast hath devoured him; torn -- torn is Joseph!'

Ed egli la riconobbe e disse: «la veste di mio figlio; lo ha divorato una bestia feroce; certamente Giuseppe è stato sbranato».

34 A nd Jacob rendeth his raiment, and putteth sackcloth on his loins, and becometh a mourner for his son many days,

Giacobbe allora si stracciò le vesti, si mise un cilicio ai fianchi e fece cordoglio di suo figlio per molti giorni.

35 a nd all his sons and all his daughters rise to comfort him, and he refuseth to comfort himself, and saith, `For -- I go down mourning unto my son, to Sheol,' and his father weepeth for him.

E tutti i suoi figli e tutte le sue figlie vennero a consolarlo; ma egli rifiutò di essere consolato e disse: «Io scenderò nello Sceol da mio figlio facendo cordoglio». Così suo padre lo pianse.

36 A nd the Medanites have sold him unto Egypt, to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners.

Intanto i Madianiti vendettero Giuseppe in Egitto a Potifar, ufficiale del Faraone e capitano delle guardie.
