1 ` And we turn, and journey into the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea, as Jehovah hath spoken unto me, and we go round the mount of Seir many days.

«Poi tornammo indietro e partimmo per il deserto in direzione del Mar Rosso, come l'Eterno mi aveva detto, e girammo intorno al monte Seir per molto tempo. rif.

2 ` And Jehovah speaketh unto me, saying,

Quindi l'Eterno mi parlò dicendo:

3 E nough to you -- is the going round of this mount; turn for yourselves northward.

"Avete girato abbastanza intorno a questo monte; volgetevi verso nord.

4 ` And the people command thou, saying, Ye are passing over into the border of your brethren, sons of Esau, who are dwelling in Seir, and they are afraid of you; and ye have been very watchful,

E ordina al popolo dicendo: Voi state per passare i confini dei figli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, che dimorano in Seir, essi avranno paura di voi; state quindi bene in guardia;

5 y e do not strive with them, for I do not give to you of their land even the treading of the sole of a foot; for a possession to Esau I have given mount Seir.

non provocateli, perché non vi darò niente del loro paese, neppure quanto ne può calcare la pianta di un piede, poiché ho dato il monte di Seir a Esaù, come sua proprietà.

6 ` Food ye buy from them with money, and have eaten; and also water ye buy from them with money, and have drunk,

Comprerete da loro con denaro le vettovaglie che mangerete e comprerete pure da loro con denaro l'acqua che berrete.

7 f or Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hands; He hath known thy walking in this great wilderness these forty years; Jehovah thy God with thee; thou hast not lacked anything.

Poiché l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti ha benedetto in tutta l'opera delle tue mani; ha vegliato sul tuo viaggio attraverso questo grande deserto. L'Eterno, il tuo DIO, è stato con te durante questi quarant'anni e non ti è mancato nulla".

8 ` And we pass by from our brethren, sons of Esau, who are dwelling in Seir, by the way of the plain, by Elath, and by Ezion-Gaber; and we turn, and pass over the way of the wilderness of Moab;

Così passammo oltre i figli di Esaù, nostri fratelli, che abitavano in Seir e, evitando la via dell'Arabah, come pure Elath ed Etsion-Gheber, ripiegammo e proseguimmo passando per il deserto di Moab.

9 a nd Jehovah saith unto me, Do not distress Moab, nor stir thyself up against them battle, for I do not give to thee of their land a possession; for to the sons of Lot I have given Ar a possession.'

L'Eterno quindi mi disse: "Non attaccare Moab e non gli muovere guerra, perché non ti darò alcuna parte del loro paese in eredità, poiché ho dato Ar ai discendenti di Lot, come loro proprietà.

10 ` The Emim formerly have dwelt in it, a people great, and numerous, and tall, as the Anakim;

(Nei tempi passati vi abitarono gli Emim, un popolo grande, numeroso e alto di statura come gli Anakim.

11 R ephaim they are reckoned, they also, as the Anakim; and the Moabites call them Emim.

Erano anch'essi ritenuti giganti, come gli Anakim; ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emim.

12 A nd in Seir have the Horim dwelt formerly; and the sons of Esau dispossess them, and destroy them from before them, and dwell in their stead, as Israel hath done to the land of his possession, which Jehovah hath given to them;

Seir era prima abitata dagli Horei; ma i discendenti di Esaù li cacciarono, li distrussero e si stabilirono al loro posto, come ha fatto Israele nel paese che possiede e che l'Eterno gli ha dato).

13 n ow, rise ye, and pass over for yourselves the brook Zered; and we pass over the brook Zered.

Ora levatevi e attraversate il torrente Zered". Così noi attraversammo il torrente Zered.

14 ` And the days which we have walked from Kadesh-Barnea until that we have passed over the brook Zered, thirty and eight years, till the consumption of all the generation of the men of battle from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah hath sworn to them;

Ora il tempo impiegalo per giungere da Kadesh-Barnea fino al passaggio del torrente Zered, di trent'otto anni, finché tutta la generazione degli uomini di guerra scomparve interamente dall'accampamento, come l'Eterno aveva loro giurato.

15 a nd also the hand of Jehovah hath been against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, till they are consumed.

Infatti la mano dell'Eterno fu contro di loro per sterminarli dall'accampamento, finché fossero annientati.

16 ` And it cometh to pass, when all the men of battle have finished dying from the midst of the people,

Così, quando l'ultimo uomo di guerra morì di mezzo al popolo,

17 t hat Jehovah speaketh unto me, saying,

l'Eterno mi parlò dicendo:

18 T hou art passing over to-day the border of Moab, even Ar,

"Oggi tu stai per passare i confini di Moab, ad Ar,

19 a nd thou hast come near over-against the sons of Ammon, thou dost not distress them, nor stir up thyself against them, for I do not give of the land of the sons of Ammon to thee a possession; for to the sons of Lot I have given it a possession.

ma avvicinandoti ai figli di Ammon, non li attaccare e non muovere loro guerra, perché io non ti darò alcuna parte del paese dei figli di Ammon in eredità, poiché l'ho dato ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà".

20 ` A land of Rephaim it is reckoned, even it; Rephaim dwelt in it formerly, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim;

(Anche questo era ritenuto un paese di giganti; nei tempi passati vi abitarono i giganti; ma gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zamzummim,

21 a people great, and numerous, and tall, as the Anakim, and Jehovah destroyeth them before them, and they dispossess them, and dwell in their stead,

un popolo grande, numeroso e alto di statura come gli Anakim; ma l'Eterno li distrusse davanti agli Ammoniti, che li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto,

22 a s He hath done for the sons of Esau, who are dwelling in Seir, when He destroyed the Horim from before them, and they dispossess them, and dwell in their stead, unto this day.

come l'Eterno aveva fatto per i discendenti di Esaù che abitavano in Seir, quando distrusse gli Horei davanti a loro. Essi li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto fino al giorno d'oggi.

23 ` As to the Avim who are dwelling in Hazerim unto Azzah, the Caphtorim -- who are coming out from Caphtor -- have destroyed them, and dwell in their stead.

Anche gli Avvei, che dimoravano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono distrutti dai Kaftorei, venuti da Kaftor, i quali si stabilirono al loro posto).

24 ` Rise ye, journey and pass over the brook Arnon; see, I have given into thy hand Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land; begin to possess, and stir up thyself against him battle.

"Levatevi, mettetevi in cammino e attraversate il torrente Arnon; ecco, io do in tuo potere Sihon, l'Amoreo, re di Heshbon, e il suo paese; comincia a prendere possesso e muovigli guerra.

25 T his day I begin to put thy dread and thy fear on the face of the peoples under the whole heavens, who hear thy fame, and have trembled and been pained because of thee.

Oggi comincerò a infondere paura e terrore di te ai popoli sotto tutti i cieli, i quali sentiranno parlare di te, e tremeranno e saranno presi da angoscia a causa di te".

26 ` And I send messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth, unto Sihon king of Heshbon, -- words of peace -- saying,

Allora mandai ambasciatori dal deserto di Kedemoth a Sihon, re di Heshbon, con parole di pace, per dirgli:

27 L et me pass over through thy land; in the several ways I go; I turn not aside -- right or left --

"Lasciami passare per il tuo paese; io camminerò per la via Regia, senza deviare né a destra né a sinistra.

28 f ood for money thou dost sell me, and I have eaten; and water for money thou dost give to me, and I have drunk; only, let me pass over on my feet, --

Tu mi venderai per denaro le vettovaglie che mangerò e mi darai per denaro l'acqua che berrò; permettimi solo di passare a piedi

29 a s the sons of Esau who are dwelling in Seir, and the Moabites who are dwelling in Ar, have done to me -- till that I pass over the Jordan, unto the land which Jehovah our God is giving to us.

(come hanno fatto per me i discendenti di Esaù che abitano in Seir e i Moabiti che abitano in Ar), finché io abbia passato il Giordano per entrare nel paese che l'Eterno, il nostro Dio, ci dà".

30 ` And Sihon king of Heshbon hath not been willing to let us pass over by him, for Jehovah thy God hath hardened his spirit, and strengthened his heart, so as to give him into thy hand as at this day.

Ma Sihon, re di Heshbon, non ci volle lasciar passare nel suo territorio, perché l'Eterno, il tuo Dio, gli aveva indurito lo spirito e reso ostinato il cuore, per darlo nelle tue mani, come è appunto oggi.

31 ` And Jehovah saith unto me, See, I have begun to give before thee Sihon and his land; begin to possess -- to possess his land.

E l'Eterno mi disse: "Vedi, ho cominciato a dare in tuo potere Sihon e il suo paese; incomincia ad occuparlo, perché tu possa entrare in possesso del suo paese".

32 ` And Sihon cometh out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle to Jahaz;

Allora Sihon uscì contro di noi con tutta la sua gente, per darci battaglia a Jahats.

33 a nd Jehovah our God giveth him before us, and we smite him, and his sons, and all his people;

Ma l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ce lo diede nelle mani, e noi sconfiggemmo lui, i suoi figli e tutta la sua gente.

34 a nd we capture all his cities at that time, and devote the whole city, men, and the women, and the infants -- we have not left a remnant;

In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città e votammo allo sterminio uomini, donne e bambini di ogni città; non lasciammo anima viva.

35 o nly, the cattle we have spoiled for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we have captured.

Soltanto prendemmo come nostro bottino il bestiame e le spoglie delle città che avevamo preso.

36 ` From Aroer, which by the edge of the brook Arnon, and the city which by the brook, even unto Gilead there hath not been a city which too high for us; the whole hath Jehovah our God given before us.

Da Aroer, che è sulle sponde del torrente Arnon e alla città che è nella valle, fino a Galaad, non ci fu alcuna città che fosse troppo forte per noi; l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, le diede tutte nelle nostre mani.

37 ` Only, unto the land of the sons of Ammon thou hast not drawn near, any part of the brook Jabbok, and cities of the hill-country, and anything which Jehovah our God hath commanded.

Ma non ti avvicinasti al paese dei figli di Ammon, ad alcun posto toccato dal torrente Jabbok, alle città del paese montuoso e a tutti i luoghi che l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci aveva proibito di attaccare».
