1 A nd Abraham old, he hath entered into days, and Jehovah hath blessed Abraham in all;

Abrahamo era ormai vecchio e di età avanzata; e l'Eterno aveva benedetto Abrahamo in ogni cosa.

2 a nd Abraham saith unto his servant, the eldest of his house, who is ruling over all that he hath, `Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh,

E Abrahamo disse al servo piú anziano di casa sua che aveva il governo su tutti i suoi beni: «Deh, metti la tua mano sotto la mia coscia;

3 a nd I cause thee to swear by Jehovah, God of the heavens, and God of the earth, that thou dost not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, in the midst of whom I am dwelling;

e io ti farò giurare per l'Eterno, il DIO dei cieli e il DIO della terra, che tu non prenderai per moglie a mio figlio alcuna delle figlie dei Cananei, in mezzo ai quali io dimoro;

4 b ut unto my land and unto my kindred dost thou go, and hast taken a wife for my son, for Isaac.'

ma andrai al mio paese e al mio parentado a prendere una moglie per mio figlio, per Isacco».

5 A nd the servant saith unto him, `It may be the woman is not willing to come after me unto this land; do I at all cause thy son to turn back unto the land from whence thou camest out?'

Il servo gli rispose: «Forse quella donna non sarà disposta a seguirmi in questo paese; dovrò io allora riportare tuo figlio nel paese da cui tu sei uscito?».

6 A nd Abraham saith unto him, `Take heed to thyself, lest thou cause my son to turn back thither;

Allora Abrahamo gli disse: «Guardati dal riportare là mio figlio!

7 J ehovah, God of the heavens, who hath taken me from the house of my father, and from the land of my birth, and who hath spoken to me, and who hath sworn to me, saying, To thy seed I give this land, He doth send His messenger before thee, and thou hast taken a wife for my son from thence;

L'Eterno, il DIO dei cieli, che mi trasse dalla casa di mio padre e dal mio paese natio, e mi parlò e mi giurò dicendo: «Io darò questo paese alla tua discendenza, egli manderà il suo angelo davanti a te, e tu prenderai di là una moglie per mio figlio.

8 a nd if the woman be not willing to come after thee, then thou hast been acquitted from this mine oath: only my son thou dost not cause to turn back thither.'

E se la donna non sarà disposta a seguirti, allora sarai sciolto da questo giuramento a me fatto; soltanto non riportare là mio figlio».

9 A nd the servant putteth his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord, and sweareth to him concerning this matter.

Così il servo pose la mano sotto la coscia di Abrahamo suo signore e fece a lui giuramento in merito a questo problema.

10 A nd the servant taketh ten camels of the camels of his lord and goeth, also of all the goods of his lord in his hand, and he riseth, and goeth unto Aram-Naharaim, unto the city of Nahor;

Poi il servo prese dieci cammelli fra i cammelli del suo signore e partì, parlando con sé ogni sorta di beni del suo signore. Egli si mise in viaggio e andò in Mesopotamia, alla città di Nahor.

11 a nd he causeth the camels to kneel at the outside of the city, at the well of water, at even-time, at the time of the coming out of the women who draw water.

E fece inginocchiare i cammelli fuori della città presso un pozzo d'acqua, verso sera, all'ora in cui le donne escono ad attingere l'acqua, e disse:

12 A nd he saith, `Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, cause to meet, I pray Thee, before me this day -- (and do kindness with my lord Abraham;

«O Eterno, DIO del mio signore Abrahamo, ti prego, fa' che quest'oggi possa fare un felice incontro, e usa benignità verso Abrahamo mio signore!

13 l o, I am standing by the fountain of water, and daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water;

Ecco, io sto presso questa fonte d'acqua, mentre le figlie degli abitanti della città escono ad attingere acqua.

14 a nd it hath been, the young person unto whom I say, Incline, I pray thee, thy pitcher, and I drink, and she hath said, Drink, and I water also thy camels) -- her Thou hast decided for Thy servant, for Isaac; and by it I know that Thou hast done kindness with my lord.'

Fa' che la fanciulla alla quale dirò: "Deh, abbassa la tua brocca perché io beva", e che mi risponderà: "Bevi, e darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli", sia quella che tu hai destinata al tuo servo Isacco. Da questo comprenderò che tu hai usato benignità verso il mio signore».

15 A nd it cometh to pass, before he hath finished speaking, that lo, Rebekah (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, brother of Abraham) is coming out, and her pitcher on her shoulder,

Egli non aveva ancora finito di parlare, quando ecco uscire con la sua brocca sulla spalla Rebecca, figlia di Bethuel, figlio di Milkah, moglie di Nahor, fratello di Abrahamo.

16 a nd the young person of very good appearance, a virgin, and a man hath not known her; and she goeth down to the fountain, and filleth her pitcher, and cometh up.

La Fanciulla era molto bella d'aspetto, vergine, e nessun uomo l'aveva mai conosciuta. Ella scese alla fonte, riempì la sua brocca, e risalì.

17 A nd the servant runneth to meet her, and saith, `Let me swallow, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher;'

Allora il servo le corse incontro e le disse: «Deh, lasciami bere un po' d'acqua dalla tua brocca».

18 a nd she saith, `Drink, my lord;' and she hasteth, and letteth down her pitcher upon her hand, and giveth him drink.

Ella rispose: «Bevi, signor mio»; poi si affrettò a calare la brocca sulla mano, e gli diede da bere.

19 A nd she finisheth giving him drink, and saith, `Also for thy camels I draw till they have finished drinking;'

Come ebbe finito di dargli da bere, disse: «Attingerò acqua anche per i tuoi cammelli, finché abbiano bevuto a sufficienza».

20 a nd she hasteth, and emptieth her pitcher into the drinking-trough, and runneth again unto the well to draw, and draweth for all his camels.

In fretta vuotò la sua brocca nell'abbeveratoio, corse di nuovo alla fonte ad attingere acqua e ne attinse per tutti i cammelli di lui.

21 A nd the man, wondering at her, remaineth silent, to know whether Jehovah hath made his way prosperous or not.

Intanto quell'uomo la contemplava in silenzio, per sapere se l'Eterno avesse o no fatto prosperare il suo viaggio.

22 A nd it cometh to pass when the camels have finished drinking, that the man taketh a golden ring (whose weight a bekah), and two bracelets for her hands (whose weight ten of gold),

Quando i cammelli ebbero finito di bere, l'uomo prese un anello d'oro per il naso del peso di mezzo siclo e due braccialetti del peso di dieci sicli d'oro per i polsi di lei, e disse:

23 a nd saith, `Whose daughter thou? declare to me, I pray thee, is the house of thy father a place for us to lodge in?'

Di chi sei figlia? Dimmelo, per favore. C'è posto per noi in casa di tuo padre per passare la notte?».

24 A nd she saith unto him, `I daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she hath borne to Nahor.'

Ella rispose: «Io sono figlia di Bethuel figlio di Milkah, che ella partorì a Nahor».

25 S he saith also unto him, `Both straw and provender abundant with us, also a place to lodge in.'

E aggiunse: «Da noi c'è strame e foraggio in quantità e anche posto per passare la notte».

26 A nd the man boweth, and doth obeisance to Jehovah,

Allora l'uomo s'inchinò, adorò l'Eterno e disse:

27 a nd saith, `Blessed Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, who hath not left off His kindness and His truth with my lord; -- I in the way, Jehovah hath led me to the house of my lord's brethren.'

«Benedetto l'Eterno, il DIO di Abrahamo mio signore, che non ha cessato di usare la sua benignità e fedeltà verso il mio signore! Quanto a me, nel viaggio, l'Eterno mi ha guidato alla casa dei fratelli del mio signore».

28 A nd the young person runneth, and declareth to the house of her mother according to these words.

E la fanciulla corse a raccontare queste cose a casa di sua madre.

29 A nd Rebekah hath a brother, and his name Laban, and Laban runneth unto the man who without, unto the fountain;

Or Rebecca aveva un fratello chiamato Labano. E Labano corse fuori da quell'uomo alla fonte.

30 y ea, it cometh to pass, when he seeth the ring, and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heareth the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, `Thus hath the man spoken unto me,' that he cometh in unto the man, and lo, he is standing by the camels by the fountain.

Come egli vide l'anello al naso e i braccialetti ai polsi di sua sorella e udì le parole di Rebecca sua sorella che diceva: «Così mi ha parlato quell'uomo», venne da quell'uomo, ed ecco che se ne stava presso ai cammelli, vicino alla fonte.

31 A nd he saith, `Come in, O blessed one of Jehovah, why standest thou without, and I -- I have prepared the house and place for the camels!'

E disse: «Entra, benedetto dall'Eterno! Perché stai fuori? Io ho preparato la casa e un luogo per i cammelli».

32 A nd he bringeth in the man into the house, and looseth the camels, and giveth straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who with him:

L'uomo entrò in casa, e Labano scaricò i cammelli diede strame e foraggio ai cammelli e portò acqua per lavare i piedi di lui e i piedi degli uomini che erano con lui.

33 a nd setteth before him to eat; but he saith, `I do not eat till I have spoken my word;' and he saith, `Speak.'

Poi gli fu posto davanti da mangiare; ma egli disse: «Non mangerò finché non abbia fatto la mia ambasciata». L'altro disse: «Parla».

34 A nd he saith, `I Abraham's servant;

Allora egli disse: «Io sono servo di Abrahamo.

35 a nd Jehovah hath blessed my lord exceedingly, and he is great; and He giveth to him flock, and herd, and silver, and gold, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses;

L'Eterno ha benedetto abbondantemente il mio signore, che è divenuto grande; gli ha dato pecore e buoi, argento e oro, servi e serve, cammelli e asini.

36 a nd Sarah, my lord's wife, beareth a son to my lord, after she hath been aged, and he giveth to him all that he hath.

Or Sara, moglie del mio signore, ha partorito nella sua vecchiaia un figlio al mio padrone, che ha dato a lui tutto ciò che possiede.

37 ` And my lord causeth me to swear, saying, Thou dost not take a wife to my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, in whose land I am dwelling.

E il mio signore mi ha fatto giurare, dicendo: "Non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra i figli dei Cananei, nel paese dei quali dimoro;

38 I f not -- unto the house of my father thou dost go, and unto my family, and thou hast taken a wife for my son.

ma andrai alla casa di mio padre e al mio parentado e là prenderai una moglie per mio figlio".

39 ` And I say unto my lord, It may be the woman doth not come after me;

Allora io dissi al mio padrone: "Può darsi che la donna non mi voglia seguire".

40 a nd he saith unto me, Jehovah, before whom I have walked habitually, doth send His messenger with thee, and hath prospered thy way, and thou hast taken a wife for my son from my family, and from the house of my father;

Ma egli rispose: "L'Eterno, davanti al quale ho camminato, manderà il suo angelo con te e farà prosperare il tuo viaggio, e tu prenderai per mio figlio una moglie dal mio parentado e dalla casa di mio padre.

41 t hen art thou acquitted from my oath, when thou comest unto my family, and if they give not to thee; then thou hast been acquitted from my oath.

Sarai sciolto dal giuramento, fattomi, quando sarai andato dal mio parentado; se poi non vorranno dartela, allora sarai sciolto dal giuramento fattomi".

42 ` And I come to-day unto the fountain, and I say, Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, if Thou art, I pray Thee, making prosperous my way in which I am going --

Oggi sono arrivato alla fonte e ho detto: "O Eterno, DIO del mio signore Abrahamo, se così ti piace, ti prego di far prosperare il viaggio che ho intrapreso;

43 ( lo, I am standing by the fountain of water), then the virgin who is coming out to draw, and I have said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher,

ecco, io mi fermo presso la fonte d'acqua; fa' che la fanciulla che uscirà ad attingere acqua e alla quale dirò: "Deh, lasciami bere un po' d'acqua dalla tua brocca",

44 a nd she hath said unto me, Both drink thou, and also for thy camels I draw -- she is the woman whom Jehovah hath decided for my lord's son.

e che mi dirà: "Bevi pure e ne attingerò anche per i tuoi cammelli", sia la moglie che l'Eterno ha destinato al figlio del mio signore.

45 ` Before I finish speaking unto my heart, then lo, Rebekah is coming out, and her pitcher on her shoulder, and she goeth down to the fountain, and draweth; and I say unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee,

Prima che io avessi finito di parlare in cuor mio, ecco uscir fuori Rebecca con la sua brocca sulla spalla; ella scese alla fonte e attinse acqua. Allora io le dissi:

46 a nd she hasteth and letteth down her pitcher from off her and saith, Drink, and thy camels also I water; and I drink, and the camels also she hath watered.

"Deh, lasciami bere!". Ed ella si affrettò a calare la brocca dalla spalla e rispose: "Bevi, e darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli". Così bevvi io, ed ella diede pure da bere ai cammelli.

47 ` And I ask her, and say, Whose daughter thou? and she saith, Daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah hath borne to him, and I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands,

Allora la interrogai e le dissi: "Di chi sei figlia?". Ella rispose: "Sono figlia di Bethuel, figlio di Nahor, che Milkah gli partorì". Così io le misi l'anello al naso e i braccialetti ai polsi.

48 a nd I bow, and do obeisance before Jehovah, and I bless Jehovah, God of my lord Abraham, who hath led me in the true way to receive the daughter of my lord's brother for his son.

Poi mi inchinai, adorai l'Eterno e benedissi l'Eterno, il DIO di Abrahamo mio signore, che mi ha condotto per la giusta via a prendere per suo figlio la figlia del fratello del mio signore.

49 ` And now, if ye are dealing kindly and truly with my lord, declare to me; and if not, declare to me; and I turn unto the right or unto the left.'

E ora, se volete usare benevolenza e fedeltà verso il mio signore, ditemelo; se no, ditemelo lo stesso e io mi volgerò a destra o a sinistra».

50 A nd Laban answereth -- Bethuel also -- and they say, `The thing hath gone out from Jehovah; we are not able to speak unto thee bad or good;

Allora Labano e Bethuel risposero e dissero: «La cosa procede dall'Eterno; noi non possiamo parlarti né in bene né in male.

51 l o, Rebekah before thee, take and go, and she is a wife to thy lord's son, as Jehovah hath spoken.'

Ecco, Rebecca è qui davanti a te, prendila, va

52 A nd it cometh to pass, when the servant of Abraham hath heard their words, that he boweth himself towards the earth before Jehovah;

Quando il servo di Abrahamo udì le loro parole, si prostrò a terra davanti all'Eterno.

53 a nd the servant taketh out vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and giveth to Rebekah; precious things also he hath given to her brother and to her mother.

Il servo trasse fuori oggetti d'argento e oggetti d'oro e vesti e li diede a Rebecca; e donò pure delle cose preziose al fratello e alla madre di lei.

54 A nd they eat and drink, he and the men who with him, and lodge all night; and they rise in the morning, and he saith, `Send me to my lord;'

Poi mangiarono e bevvero, egli e gli uomini che erano con lui, e si fermarono per la notte. Alzatisi al mattino, il servo disse: «Lasciatemi tornare dal mio signore».

55 a nd her brother saith -- her mother also -- `Let the young person abide with us a week or ten days, afterwards doth she go.'

Il fratello e la madre di Rebecca dissero: «Lascia che la fanciulla rimanga alcuni giorni con noi, almeno una diecina; poi se ne può andare».

56 A nd he saith unto them, `Do not delay me, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my way; send me away, and I go to my lord;'

Ma egli rispose loro: «Non mi trattenete, perché l'Eterno ha fatto prosperare il mio viaggio; lasciatemi partire, affinché io me ne torni dal mio signore».

57 a nd they say, `Let us call for the young person, and ask at her mouth;'

Allora essi dissero: «Chiamiamo la fanciulla e chiediamo a lei stessa».

58 a nd they call for Rebekah, and say unto her, `Dost thou go with this man?' and she saith, `I go.'

Allora chiamarono Rebecca e le dissero: «Vuoi andare con quest'uomo?». Ella rispose: «Si, andrò».

59 A nd they send away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men;

Così lasciarono andare Rebecca loro sorella e la sua balia col servo di Abrahamo e i suoi uomini.

60 a nd they bless Rebekah, and say to her, `Thou our sister; become thou thousands of myriads, and thy seed doth possess the gate of those hating it.'

E benedissero Rebecca e le dissero: «Sorella nostra, possa tu divenire madre di migliaia di miriadi e possa la tua discendenza possedere la porta dei suoi nemici».

61 A nd Rebekah and her young women arise, and ride on the camels, and go after the man; and the servant taketh Rebekah and goeth.

Allora Rebecca e le sue serve si levarono, montarono sui cammelli e seguirono quell'uomo. Così il servo prese Rebecca e se ne andò.

62 A nd Isaac hath come in from the entrance of the Well of the Living One, my Beholder; and he is dwelling in the land of the south,

Or Isacco era tornato dal pozzo di Lahai-Roi, perché abitava nella regione del Neghev.

63 a nd Isaac goeth out to meditate in the field, at the turning of the evening, and he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, camels are coming.

Isacco era uscito, sul far della sera, per meditare nella campagna; ed egli alzò gli occhi e guardò, ed ecco venire dei cammelli.

64 A nd Rebekah lifteth up her eyes, and seeth Isaac, and alighteth from off the camel;

Anche Rebecca alzò gli occhi e vide Isacco; allora ella smontò in fretta dal cammello,

65 a nd she saith unto the servant, `Who this man who is walking in the field to meet us?' and the servant saith, `It my lord;' and she taketh the veil, and covereth herself.

e disse al servo: «Chi è quell'uomo che viene nel campo incontro a noi?». Il servo rispose: «E' il mio signore». Allora ella, preso il velo, si coprì.

66 A nd the servant recounteth to Isaac all the things that he hath done,

Poi il servo raccontò a Isacco tutte le cose che aveva fatto.

67 a nd Isaac bringeth her in unto the tent of Sarah his mother, and he taketh Rebekah, and she becometh his wife, and he loveth her, and Isaac is comforted after his mother.

Isacco introdusse Rebecca nella tenda di Sara sua madre e la prese con sé; ella divenne sua moglie ed egli l'amò. Così Isacco fu consolato dopo la morte di sua madre.
