1 A nd Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him;

Mentre Giacobbe continuava il suo cammino, gli si fecero incontro degli angeli di DIO.

2 a nd Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This the camp of God;' and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.'

Come Giacobbe li vide, disse: «Questo è l'accampamento di DIO»; e pose nome a quel luogo Mahanaim.

3 A nd Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom,

Poi Giacobbe mandò davanti a sé alcuni messaggeri al fratello Esaú, nel paese di Seir, nella campagna di Edom.

4 a nd commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;

E diede loro quest'ordine dicendo: «Direte così ad Esaú, mio signore: "Così dice il tuo servo Giacobbe: «Io ho soggiornato presso Labano e vi sono rimasto finora;

5 a nd I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.'

ho buoi, asini, greggi, servi e serve; e lo mando a dire al mio signore, per trovare grazia ai tuoi occhi"».

6 A nd the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;'

I messaggeri tornarono quindi da Giacobbe, dicendo: «Siamo andati da tuo fratello Esaú; ed ora sta venendo egli stesso ad incontrarti e ha con lui quattrocento uomini».

7 a nd Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps,

Allora Giacobbe fu preso da una grande paura ed angoscia e divise in due schiere la gente che era con lui, le greggi, gli armenti e i cammelli, e disse:

8 a nd saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.'

Se Esaú viene contro una delle schiere e l'attacca, la schiera che rimane potrà mettersi in salvo».

9 A nd Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:

Poi Giacobbe disse: O DIO di mio padre Abrahamo, DIO di mio padre Isacco, o Eterno, che mi dicesti: "Torna al tuo paese e al tuo parentado e ti farò del bene",

10 I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant -- for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

io non sono degno di tutte le benignità e di tutta la fedeltà che hai usato col tuo servo, poiché io passai questo Giordano solamente col mio bastone e ora son divenuto due schiere.

11 ` Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me -- mother beside sons;

Liberami, ti prego, dalle mani di mio fratello, dalle mani di Esaú, perché io ho paura di lui e temo che egli venga ad attaccarmi, non risparmiando né madri né bambini.

12 a nd Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.'

E tu dicesti: "Certo, io ti farò del bene e farò diventare la tua discendenza come la sabbia del mare, che non si può contare tanto è numerosa"».

13 A nd he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother:

Così Giacobbe passò in quel luogo la notte; e da ciò che gli veniva sottomano egli scelse un dono per suo fratello Esaú:

14 s he-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty,

duecento capre e venti becchi, duecento pecore e venti montoni,

15 s uckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten;

trenta cammelle allattanti con i loro piccoli, quaranta mucche e dieci tori, venti asine e dieci puledri.

16 a nd he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.'

Poi li consegnò ai suoi servi, ogni gregge per conto suo, e disse ai suoi servi: «Passate davanti a me e lasciate un certo spazio fra un gregge e l'altro».

17 A nd he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose thou? and whither goest thou? and whose these before thee?

E ordinò al primo: «Quando mio fratello Esaú ti incontrerà e ti chiederà: "Di chi sei tu e dove vai? A chi appartengono questi animali davanti a te?",

18 t hen thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob's: it a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also behind us.'

tu risponderai: "Appartengono al tuo servo Giacobbe; è un dono inviato al mio signore Esaú; ed ecco, egli stesso viene dietro di noi"».

19 A nd he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him,

Egli diede lo stesso ordine al secondo, al terzo e a tutti quelli che seguivano le greggi, dicendo: «In questo modo parlerete a Esaú quando lo incontrerete;

20 a nd ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob behind us;' for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;'

e direte: "Ecco, il tuo servo Giacobbe sta venendo egli stesso dietro di noi"». Perché diceva: «Io lo placherò col dono che mi precede e dopo vedrò la sua faccia; forse mi farà buona accoglienza».

21 a nd the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp.

Così il dono andò davanti a lui, ma egli passò la notte nell'accampamento.

22 A nd he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok;

Or quella notte si alzò, prese le sue due mogli, le sue due serve, i suoi undici figli, e attraversò il guado di Jabbok.

23 a nd he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.

Li prese e fece loro passare il torrente, e lo fece passare a tutto quello che possedeva.

24 A nd Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn;

Così Giacobbe rimase solo e un uomo lottò con lui fino allo spuntar dell'alba.

25 a nd he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;

Quando quest'uomo vide che non lo poteva vincere, gli toccò la cavità dell'anca; e la cavità dell'anca di Giacobbe fu slogata, mentre quello lottava con lui.

26 a nd he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:' and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.'

E quegli disse: «Lasciami andare, perché sta spuntando l'alba». Ma Giacobbe disse: «Non ti lascerò andare, se non mi avrai prima benedetto!».

27 A nd he saith unto him, `What thy name?' and he saith, `Jacob.'

L'altro gli disse: «Qual è il tuo nome?». Egli rispose: «Giacobbe».

28 A nd he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.'

Allora quegli disse: «Il tuo nome non sarà piú Giacobbe, ma Israele, poiché tu hai lottato con DIO e con gli uomini, ed hai vinto».

29 A nd Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;' and he saith, `Why this, thou askest for My name?' and He blesseth him there.

Giacobbe gli disse: «Ti prego, dimmi il tuo nome». Ma quello rispose: «Perché chiedi il mio nome?».

30 A nd Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;'

E qui lo benedisse. Allora Giacobbe chiamò quel luogo Peniel, perché disse: «Ho visto Dio faccia a faccia, e la mia vita è stata risparmiata».

31 a nd the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh;

Come egli ebbe passato Peniel, il sole si levava; e Giacobbe zoppicava all'anca.

32 t herefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob's thigh, against the sinew which shrank.

Per questo, fino al giorno d'oggi, i figli d'Israele non mangiano il tendine della coscia che passa per la cavità dell'anca, perché quell'uomo aveva toccato la cavità dell'anca di Giacobbe, al punto del tendine della coscia.
