1 T hese the words of the covenant which Jehovah hath commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, apart from the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.

Queste sono le parole del patto che l'Eterno comandò a Mosè di fare con i figli d'Israele nel paese di Moab, oltre il patto che aveva fatto con essi al monte Horeb.

2 A nd Moses calleth unto all Israel, and saith unto them, `Ye -- ye have seen all that which Jehovah hath done before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land;

Mosè convocò dunque tutto Israele e disse loro: «Voi avete visto tutto ciò che l'Eterno ha fatto sotto i vostri occhi nel paese d'Egitto al Faraone, a tutti i suoi servitori e a tutto il suo paese;

3 t he great trials which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders;

i tuoi occhi hanno visto le grandi calamità, i segni e quei grandi prodigi;

4 a nd Jehovah hath not given to you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, till this day,

ma fino a questo giorno l'Eterno non vi ha dato un cuore per comprendere, occhi per vedere e orecchi per udire.

5 a nd I cause you to go forty years in a wilderness; your garments have not been consumed from off you, and thy shoe hath not worn away from off thy foot;

Io vi ho condotto quarant'anni nel deserto; le vostre vesti non si sono logorate addosso a voi e i vostri calzari non si sono logorati ai vostri piedi.

6 b read ye have not eaten, and wine and strong drink ye have not drunk, so that ye know that I Jehovah your God.

Non avete mangiato pane e non avete bevuto vino né bevanda inebriante, affinché conosceste che io sono l'Eterno, il vostro DIO.

7 ` And ye come in unto this place, and Sihon king of Heshbon -- also Og king of Bashan -- doth come out to meet us, to battle, and we smite them,

Quando siete arrivati in questo luogo, Sihon re di Heshbon e Og re di Bashan sono usciti contro di noi per combattere, ma noi li abbiamo sconfitti,

8 a nd take their land, and give it for an inheritance to the Reubenite, and to the Gadite, and to the half of the tribe of Manasseh;

abbiamo preso il loro paese e l'abbiamo dato in eredità ai Rubeniti, ai Gaditi e alla mezza tribú di Manasse.

9 a nd ye have kept the words of this covenant, and done them, so that ye cause all that ye do to prosper.

Osservate dunque le parole di questo patto e mettetele in pratica, affinché prosperiate in tutto ciò che fate.

10 ` Ye are standing to-day, all of you, before Jehovah your God -- your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your authorities -- every man of Israel;

Oggi tutti voi state davanti all'Eterno, il vostro DIO: i vostri capi, le vostre tribú, i vostri anziani, i vostri ufficiali, tutti gli uomini d'Israele,

11 y our infants, your wives, and thy sojourner who in the midst of thy camps, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water --

i vostri bambini, le vostre mogli e lo straniero che in mezzo al tuo accampamento, da colui che spacca la tua legna a colui che attinge la tua acqua,

12 f or thy passing over into the covenant of Jehovah thy God, and into His oath which Jehovah thy God is making with thee to-day;

per entrare nel patto dell'Eterno, il tuo DIO, e nel suo giuramento che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, fa oggi con te,

13 i n order to establish thee to-day to Him for a people, and He Himself is thy God, as He hath spoken to thee, and as He hath sworn to thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

per stabilirti oggi come suo popolo e per essere tuo DIO, come ti disse e come giurò ai tuoi padri, ad Abrahamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe.

14 ` And not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath;

Io faccio questo patto e questo giuramento non soltanto con voi,

15 b ut with him who is here with us, standing to-day before Jehovah our God, and with him who is not here with us to-day,

ma anche con quelli che stanno qui oggi con noi davanti all'Eterno, il nostro DIO, e con quelli che oggi non sono qui con noi.

16 f or ye have known how ye dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we passed by through the midst of the nations which ye have passed by;

(Poiché voi sapete che abbiamo dimorato nel paese d'Egitto e che siamo passati in mezzo alle nazioni, che avete attraversato;

17 a nd ye see their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which with them,

e avete visto le loro abominazioni e gl'idoli di legno, di pietra, d'argento e d'oro, che sono in mezzo a loro).

18 l est there be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart is turning to-day from Jehovah our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations, lest there be in you a root fruitful of gall and wormwood:

Non vi sia tra voi uomo o donna o famiglia o tribú il cui cuore si allontani dall'Eterno il nostro DIO, per andare a servire gli dèi di quelle nazioni; non vi sia tra di voi radice alcuna che produca veleno e assenzio;

19 ` And it hath been, in his hearing the words of this oath, and he hath blessed himself in his heart, saying, I have peace, though in the stubbornness of my heart I go on, in order to end the fulness with the thirst.

e non avvenga che alcuno, ascoltando le parole di questo giuramento, in cuor suo faccia propria una benedizione, dicendo: "Avrò pace, anche se camminerò secondo la caparbietà del mio cuore", come se l'ebbro potesse essere incluso al sobrio.

20 J ehovah is not willing to be propitious to him, for then doth the anger of Jehovah smoke, also His zeal, against that man, and lain down on him hath all the oath which is written in this book, and Jehovah hath blotted out his name from under the heavens,

L'Eterno non gli potrà mai perdonare; ma in tal caso l'ira dell'Eterno e la sua gelosia arderanno contro quell'uomo e tutte le maledizioni scritte in questo libro si poseranno su di lui, e l'Eterno cancellerà il suo nome di sotto al cielo;

21 a nd Jehovah hath separated him for evil, out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the oaths of the covenant which is written in this book of the law.

l'Eterno lo separerà per distruzione da tutte le tribú d'Israele, secondo tutte le maledizioni del patto scritto in questo libro della legge.

22 ` And the latter generation of your sons who rise after you, and the stranger who cometh in from a land afar off, have said when they have seen the strokes of that land, and its sicknesses which Jehovah hath sent into it, --

Così la futura generazione dei vostri figli che sorgerà dopo di voi e lo straniero che verrà da un paese lontano, nel vedere le calamità e le infermità che l'Eterno gli ha inflitto, diranno:

23 ( brimstone and salt is the whole land burnt, it is not sown, nor doth it shoot up, nor doth there go up on it any herb, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which Jehovah overturned in His anger, and in His fury,) --

"Tutto il suolo è zolfo, sale, arsura; non è seminato, non produce più nulla e non vi cresce piú alcuna erba, come dopo la distruzione di Sodoma, di Gomorra, di Admah e di Tseboim, che l'Eterno distrusse nella sua ira e nel suo furore".

24 y ea, all the nations have said, Wherefore hath Jehovah done thus to this land? what the heat of this great anger?

Si, tutte le nazioni diranno: "Perché ha l'Eterno trattato cosi questo paese? Perché mai l'ardore di questa grande ira?"

25 ` And they have said, Because that they have forsaken the covenant of Jehovah, God of their fathers, which He made with them in His bringing them out of the land of Egypt,

Allora risponderanno: "Poiché hanno abbandonato il patto dell'Eterno, il DIO dei loro padri, che egli stabilì con loro, quando li fece uscire dal paese d'Egitto;

26 a nd they go and serve other gods, and bow themselves to them -- gods which they have not known, and which He hath not apportioned to them;

perché sono andati a servire altri dèi e si sono prostrati davanti a loro, dèi che essi non avevano conosciuto e che l'Eterno non aveva loro dato.

27 a nd the anger of Jehovah burneth against that land, to bring in on it all the reviling that is written in this book,

Per questo si è accesa l'ira dell'Eterno contro questo paese, per far venire su di esso tutte le maledizioni scritte in questo libro;

28 a nd Jehovah doth pluck them from off their ground in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath, and doth cast them unto another land, as this day.

e l'Eterno li ha strappati dal loro paese con ira, con furore e con grande indignazione e li ha gettati in un altro paese, come è avvenuto oggi".

29 ` The things hidden to Jehovah our God, and the things revealed to us and to our sons -- to the age, to do all the words of this law.

Le cose occulte appartengono all'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ma le cose rivelate sono per noi e per i nostri figli per sempre, perché mettiamo in pratica tutte le parole di questa legge».
