Come il passero svolazza e la rondine vola, cosí la maledizione senza motivo non ha effetto.

3 A whip is for a horse, a bridle for an ass, And a rod for the back of fools.

La frusta per il cavallo, la briglia per l'asino e il bastone per il dorso degli stolti.

Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, per non diventare anche tu come lui.

Come le gambe dello zoppo sono malferme, cosí è un proverbio sulla bocca degli stolti.

Chi dà gloria a uno stolto è come chi lega una pietra a una fionda.

9 A thorn hath gone up into the hand of a drunkard, And a parable in the mouth of fools.

Un proverbio sulla bocca degli stolti è come una spina che penetra nella mano di un ubriaco.

10 G reat the Former of all, And He is rewarding a fool, And is rewarding transgressors.

Il grande Dio che ha formato tutte le cose è colui che dà la retribuzione allo stolto e ai trasgressori.

11 A s a dog hath returned to its vomit, A fool is repeating his folly.

Come un cane ritorna al suo vomito, cosí lo stolto ripete la sua stoltezza.

12 T hou hast seen a man wise in his own eyes, More hope of a fool than of him!

Hai visto un uomo che si crede saggio? C'è maggiore speranza per uno stolto che per lui,

Il pigro dice: «C'è un leone nella strada, c'è un leone per le vie!».

14 T he door turneth round on its hinge, And the slothful on his bed.

Come la porta gira sui suoi cardini, cosí il pigro sul suo letto.

15 T he slothful hath hid his hand in a dish, He is weary of bringing it back to his mouth.

Il pigro affonda la sua mano nel piatto, ma si stanca persino a portarla alla bocca,

16 W iser the slothful in his own eyes, Than seven returning a reason.

Il pigro si crede piú saggio di sette persone che danno risposte assennate.

17 L aying hold on the ears of a dog, a passer-by making himself wrath for strife not his own.

Il passante che si immischia in una lite che non lo riguarda, è come chi prende un cane per le orecchie.

18 A s pretending to be feeble, Who is casting sparks, arrows, and death,

Come un pazzo che scaglia tizzoni, frecce e morte,

19 S o hath a man deceived his neighbour, And hath said, `Am not I playing?'

cosí è colui che inganna il prossimo e dice: «Ho fatto per scherzo!».

20 W ithout wood is fire going out, And without a tale-bearer, contention ceaseth,

Quando manca la legna, il fuoco si spegne; e quando non c'è maldicente, la disputa cessa.

21 C oal to burning coals, and wood to fire, And a man of contentions to kindle strife.

Come il carbone dà la brace e la legna il fuoco, cosí l'uomo rissoso attizza le liti.

22 T he words of a tale-bearer as self-inflicted wounds, And they have gone down the inner parts of the heart.

Le parole del maldicente sono come cibi squisiti e penetrano fino nell'intimo delle viscere.

23 S ilver of dross spread over potsherd, burning lips and an evil heart.

Labbra ardenti e un cuore malvagio sono come scoria d'argento spalmata sopra un vaso di terra.

24 B y his lips doth a hater dissemble, And in his heart he placeth deceit,

Chi odia finge con le sue labbra, ma nel suo intimo cova inganno.

25 W hen his voice is gracious trust not in him, For seven abominations in his heart.

Quando parla cortesemente non fidarti di lui, perché ha sette abominazioni in cuore.

26 H atred is covered by deceit, Revealed is its wickedness in an assembly.

Anche se l'odio è nascosto con dissimulazione, la sua malvagità sarà palesata nell'assemblea.

27 W hoso is digging a pit falleth into it, And the roller of a stone, to him it turneth.

Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà dentro, e chi rotola una pietra gli ricadrà addosso.

28 A lying tongue hateth its bruised ones, And a flattering mouth worketh an overthrow!

La lingua bugiarda odia quelli che ha ferito, e la bocca adulatrice produce rovina.
