1 A nd Pashhur son of Immer the priest -- who also overseer, leader in the house of Jehovah -- heareth Jeremiah prophesying these things,

Ora Pashhur, figlio di Immer, sacerdote e caposoprintendente della casa dell'Eterno, udí Geremia che profetizzava queste cose.

2 a nd Pashhur smiteth Jeremiah the prophet, and putteth him unto the stocks, that by the high gate of Benjamin, that by the house of Jehovah.

Allora Pashhur percosse il profeta Geremia e lo mise nella prigione che si trovava nella porta superiore di Beniamino presso la casa dell'Eterno.

3 a nd it cometh to pass on the morrow, that Pashhur bringeth out Jeremiah from the stocks, and Jeremiah saith unto him, `Not Pashhur hath Jehovah called thy name, but -- Magor-Missabib.

Il giorno seguente Pashhur fece uscire Geremia dalla prigione. Geremia gli disse: «L'Eterno non ti chiama piú Pashhur, ma Magor-Missabib.

4 F or thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am making thee for a fear to thyself, And to all loving thee, And they have fallen by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes are beholding, And all Judah I give into the hand of the king of Babylon, And he hath removed them to Babylon, And he hath smitten them with the sword.

Poiché cosí dice l'Eterno: Ecco, io darò in preda al terrore te e tutti i tuoi amici; essi cadranno per la spada dei loro nemici e i tuoi occhi lo vedranno. Darò tutto Giuda nelle mani del re di Babilonia, che li condurrà in cattività a Babilonia e li colpirà con la spada.

5 A nd I have given all the strength of this city, And all its labour, and all its precious things, Yea, all the treasures of the kings of Judah I do give into the hand of their enemies, And they have spoiled them, and taken them, And have brought them into Babylon.

Inoltre darò tutte le ricchezze di questa città, tutto il prodotto delle sue fatiche e tutte le sue cose preziose, sí, darò tutti i tesori dei re di Giuda in mano dei loro nemici che li saccheggeranno, li prenderanno e li porteranno a Babilonia.

6 A nd thou, Pashhur, and all dwelling in thy house, Do go into captivity. and Babylon thou dost enter, And there thou diest, and there thou art buried, Thou and all loving thee, To whom thou hast prophesied falsely.'

E tu, Pashhur, e tutti quelli che abitano in casa tua, andrete in cattività, andrai a Babilonia, là morirai e là sarai sepolto, tu e tutti i tuoi amici, ai quali hai profetizzato menzogne».

7 T hou hast persuaded me, O Jehovah, and I am persuaded; Thou hast hardened me, and dost prevail, I have been for a laughter all the day, Every one is mocking at me,

Tu mi hai persuaso, o Eterno, e io mi sono lasciato persuadere; tu sei piú forte di me e hai vinto. Sono diventato oggetto di scherno ogni giorno; ognuno si fa beffe di me.

8 B ecause from the time I speak I cry out, `Violence and destruction,' I cry, For the word of Jehovah hath been to me For reproach and for derision all the day.

Poiché ogni volta che io parlo, grido e proclamo: "Violenza e saccheggio!" Sí, la parola dell'Eterno è per me un motivo di obbrobrio e di scherno ogni giorno.

9 A nd I said, `I do not mention Him, Nor do I speak any more in His name,' And it hath been in my heart As a burning fire shut up in my bones, And I have been weary of containing, And I am not able.

Allora ho detto: «Non lo menzionerò piú e non parlerò piú nel suo nome». Ma la sua parola era nel mio cuore come un fuoco ardente, chiuso nelle mie ossa; mi sforzavo di contenerlo, ma non potevo.

10 F or I have heard the evil report of many, Fear round about: `Declare, and we declare it,' All mine allies are watching my halting, `Perhaps he is enticed, and we prevail over him, And we take our vengeance out of him.'

Udivo le calunnie di molti: «Terrore all'intorno! Denunciatelo e lo denuncieremo!». Tutti quelli con i quali vivevo in pace aspettavano che io inciampassi e dicevano: «Forse si lascerà persuadere, cosí noi prevarremo contro di lui e ci vendicheremo di lui».

11 A nd Jehovah with me, as a terrible mighty one, Therefore my persecutors stumble and prevail not, They have been exceedingly ashamed, For they have not acted wisely, Confusion age-during is not forgotten.

Ma l'Eterno è con me come un potente eroe; perciò i miei persecutori inciamperanno e non prevarranno; saranno grandemente svergognati, perché non riusciranno; la loro vergogna sarà eterna e non sarà dimenticata.

12 A nd, O Jehovah of Hosts, trier of the righteous, Beholder of reins and heart, I do see Thy vengeance out of them, For unto Thee I have revealed my cause.

Ma tu, o Eterno degli eserciti, che provi il giusto e scruti la mente e il cuore, fammi vedere la tua vendetta su di loro, perché a te ho affidato la mia causa.

13 S ing ye to Jehovah, praise Jehovah, For He hath delivered the soul of the needy From the hand of evil doers.

Cantate all'Eterno, lodate l'Eterno, perché ha liberato la vita del bisognoso dalla mano dei malfattori.

14 C ursed the day in which I was born, The day that my mother bare me, Let it not be blessed!

Maledetto il giorno in cui nacqui! Il giorno in cui mia madre mi partorí non sia benedetto!

15 C ursed the man who bore tidings my father, saying, `Born to thee hath been a child -- a male,' Making him very glad!

Maledetto l'uomo che portò l'annuncio a mio padre, dicendo: «Ti è nato un figlio maschio», riempiendolo di gioia.

16 T hen hath that man been as the cities, That Jehovah overthrew, and repented not, And he hath heard a cry at morning, And a shout at time of noon.

Sia quell'uomo come le città che l'Eterno ha distrutto senza alcuna compassione. Oda il grido al mattino e clamori di guerra a mezzogiorno,

17 B ecause he hath not put me to death from the womb, And my mother is to me -- my grave, And her womb a pregnancy age-during.

perché non mi ha fatto morire fin dal grembo materno; cosí mia madre sarebbe stata la mia tomba e il suo grembo gravido per sempre.

18 W hy this? from the womb I have come out, To see labour and sorrow, Yea, consumed in shame are my days!

Perché sono uscito dal grembo materno, per vedere travaglio, dolore e per finire i miei giorni nella vergogna?
