1 A nd the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst to station himself by Jehovah.

Un giorno avvenne che i figli di DIO, andarono a presentarsi davanti all'Eterno, e in mezzo a loro andò anche Satana a presentarsi davanti all'Eterno.

2 A nd Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence camest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down in it.'

L'Eterno disse a Satana: «Da dove vieni?». Satana rispose all'Eterno: «Dall'andare avanti e indietro sulla terra e dal percorrerla su e giú». L'Eterno disse a Satana:

3 A nd Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart unto My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God and turning aside from evil? and still he is keeping hold on his integrity, and thou dost move Me against him to swallow him up for nought!'

«Hai notato il mio servo Giobbe? Poiché sulla terra non c'è nessun altro come lui, che sia integro, retto, tema DIO e fugga il male. Egli si mantiene saldo nella sua integrità, nonostante tu mi abbia istigato contro di lui per rovinarlo senza alcun motivo».

4 A nd the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `A skin for a skin, and all that a man hath he doth give for his life.

Allora Satana rispose all'Eterno e disse: «Pelle per pelle! Tutto ciò che possiede, l'uomo è disposto a darlo per la sua vita.

5 Y et, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike unto his bone and unto his flesh -- if not: unto Thy face he doth bless Thee!'

Ma stendi la tua mano e tocca le sue ossa e la sua carne e vedrai se non ti maledice in faccia».

6 A nd Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, he in thy hand; only his life take care of.'

L'Eterno disse a Satana: «Eccolo in tuo potere; risparmia però la sua vita».

7 A nd the Adversary goeth forth from the presence of Jehovah, and smiteth Job with a sore ulcer from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Cosí Satana si ritirò dalla presenza dell'Eterno e colpí Giobbe di un'ulcera maligna dalla pianta dei piedi alla sommità del capo.

8 A nd he taketh to him a potsherd to scrape himself with it, and he is sitting in the midst of the ashes.

Giobbe prese un coccio per grattarsi e stava seduto in mezzo alla cenere.

9 A nd his wife saith to him, `Still thou art keeping hold on thine integrity: bless God and die.'

Allora sua moglie gli disse: «Rimani ancora fermo nella tua integrità? Maledici DIO e muori!».

10 A nd he saith unto her, `As one of the foolish women speaketh, thou speakest; yea, the good we receive from God, and the evil we do not receive.' In all this Job hath not sinned with his lips.

Ma egli disse a lei: «Tu parli come parlerebbe una donna insensata. Se da DIO accettiamo il bene, perché non dovremmo accettare anche il male?». In tutto questo Giobbe non peccò con le sue labbra.

11 A nd three of the friends of Job hear of all this evil that hath come upon him, and they come in each from his place -- Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite -- and they are met together to come in to bemoan him, and to comfort him;

Quando tre amici di Giobbe vennero a sapere di tutte queste sciagure che si erano abbattute su di lui, vennero ciascuno dal suo paese, Elifaz di Teman, Bildad di Shuah e Tsofar di Naamath; essi infatti si erano messi d'accordo per venire a fargli le condoglianze e a consolarlo.

12 a nd they lift up their eyes from afar and have not discerned him, and they lift up their voice and weep, and rend each his robe, and sprinkle dust on their heads -- heavenward.

Alzarono gli occhi da lontano ma non lo poterono riconoscere; allora si misero a piangere a gran voce, e ognuno si stracciò le vesti e si cosparse il capo di polvere gettandola verso il cielo.

13 A nd they sit with him on the earth seven days and seven nights, and there is none speaking unto him a word when they have seen that the pain hath been very great.

Poi si sedettero accanto a lui per sette giorni e sette notti, e nessuno gli rivolse una sola parola, perché vedevano che il suo dolore era molto grande.
