1 T hus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, He is forming locusts at the beginning of the ascending of the latter growth, and lo, the latter growth after the mowings of the king;

Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore, l'Eterno: egli formava cavallette, quando iniziava a crescere la seconda erba; ed ecco, la seconda erba veniva dopo la falciatura del re.

2 a nd it hath come to pass, when it hath finished to consume the herb of the land, that I say: `Lord Jehovah, forgive, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he small?'

Quando esse ebbero finito di divorare l'erba della terra io dissi: «Signore, Eterno deh perdona. Come potrebbe durare Giacobbe, dato che è piccolo?».

3 J ehovah hath repented of this, `It shall not be,' said Jehovah.

L'Eterno si pentí di questo: «Ciò non avverrà», disse l'Eterno.

4 T hus hath the Lord Jehovah shewed me, and lo, the Lord Jehovah is calling to contend by fire, and it consumeth the great deep, yea, it hath consumed the portion, and I say:

Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore, l'Eterno: il Signore, l'Eterno, proclamava di voler difendere la sua causa col fuoco; e il fuoco divorò il grande abisso e divorò una parte del paese.

5 ` Lord Jehovah, cease, I pray Thee, How doth Jacob arise -- for he small?'

Allora io dissi: «Signore, Eterno, deh, cessa. Come potrebbe durare Giacobbe, dato che è piccolo?».

6 J ehovah hath repented of this, `It also shall not be,' said the Lord Jehovah.

L'Eterno si pentí di questo: «Neppure questo avverrà», disse il Signore, l'Eterno.

7 T hus hath He shewed me, and lo, the Lord is standing by a wall a plumb-line, and in His hand a plumb-line;

Ecco ciò che egli mi fece vedere: il Signore stava ritto sopra un muro a piombo e con un filo a piombo in mano.

8 a nd Jehovah saith unto me, `What art thou seeing, Amos?' And I say, `A plumb-line;' and the Lord saith: `Lo, I am setting a plumb-line in the midst of My people Israel, I do not add any more to pass over to it.

L'Eterno mi disse: «Amos, che cosa vedi?». Io risposi: «Un filo a piombo». Allora il Signore disse: «Ecco, io pongo un filo a piombo in mezzo al mio popolo Israele; non lo risparmierò piú a lungo.

9 A nd desolated have been high places of Isaac, And sanctuaries of Israel are wasted, And I have risen against the house of Jeroboam with a sword.'

Gli alti luoghi d'Isacco saranno devastati e i santuari d'Israele saranno distrutti; io mi leverò con la spada contro la casa di Geroboamo».

10 A nd Amaziah priest of Beth-El sendeth unto Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, `Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words,

Allora Amatsiah, sacerdote di Bethel mandò a dire a Geroboamo re d'Israele: «Amos congiura contro di te in mezzo alla casa d'Israele; il paese non è in grado di sopportare tutte le sue parole.

11 f or thus said Amos: By sword die doth Jeroboam, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'

Amos infatti ha detto cosí: Geroboamo morirà di spada e Israele sarà certamente deportato lontano dal suo paese.

12 A nd Amaziah saith unto Amos, `Seer, go flee for thee unto the land of Judah, and eat there bread, and there thou dost prophesy;

Amatsiah disse ad Amos: «Veggente, va scappatene nel paese di Giuda; là mangerai pane e là profetizzerai;

13 a nd Beth-El do not add to prophesy any more, for it the king's sanctuary, and it the royal house.'

14 A nd Amos answereth and saith unto Amaziah, `I no prophet, nor a prophet's son I, but a herdsman I, and a cultivator of sycamores,

Allora Amos rispose e disse ad Amatsiah: «Io non ero profeta né figlio di profeti, ma ero un mandriano e coltivavo i sicomori.

15 a nd Jehovah taketh me from after the flock, and Jehovah saith unto me, Go, prophesy unto My people Israel.

L'Eterno mi prese da dietro al gregge, e l'Eterno mi disse: "Va' profetizza al mio popolo d'Israele

16 A nd now, hear a word of Jehovah: thou art saying, Do not prophesy against Israel, nor drop against the house of Isaac,

Ora perciò ascolta la parola dell'Eterno: Tu dici: "Non profetizzare contro Israele e smettila di parlare contro la casa di Isacco"

17 t herefore thus said Jehovah: Thy wife in the city doth go a-whoring, And thy sons and thy daughters by sword do fall, And thy land by line is apportioned, And thou on an unclean land diest, And Israel certainly removeth from off its land.'

Perciò cosí parla l'Eterno: "Tua moglie si prostituirà nella città, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie cadranno di spada e il tuo paese sarà spartito con la corda; tu morirai su terra impura e Israele sarà certamente deportato lontano dal suo paese"».
