1 A nd all the company of the sons of Israel journey from the wilderness of Sin, on their journeyings, by the command of Jehovah, and encamp in Rephidim, and there is no water for the people to drink;

Poi tutta l'assemblea dei figli d'Israele partì dal deserto di Sin, marciando a tappe secondo gli ordini dell'Eterno, e si accampò a Redifim. Ma non c'era acqua da bere per il popolo.

2 a nd the people strive with Moses, and say, `Give us water, and we drink.' And Moses saith to them, `What? -- ye strive with me, what? -- ye try Jehovah?'

Allora il popolo contese con Mosè e disse: «Dacci dell'acqua da bere». Mosè rispose loro: «Perché contendete con me? Perché tentate l'Eterno?».

3 a nd the people thirst there for water, and the people murmur against Moses, and say, `Why this? -- thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to put us to death, also our sons and our cattle, with thirst.'

Là il popolo ebbe sete di acqua e mormorò contro Mosè, dicendo: «Perché ci hai fatti salire dall'Egitto per farci morire di sete noi, i nostri figli e il nostro bestiame?».

4 A nd Moses crieth to Jehovah, saying, `What do I to this people? yet a little, and they have stoned me.'

Così Mosè gridò all'Eterno, dicendo: «Che farò io per questo popolo? Ancora un po' ed essi mi lapideranno».

5 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Pass over before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel, and thy rod with which thou hast smitten the River take in thy hand, and thou hast gone:

L'Eterno disse a Mosè: «Passa davanti al popolo e prendi con te degli anziani d'Israele; prendi anche nella tua mano il tuo bastone col quale percuotesti il fiume, e va'.

6 L o, I am standing before thee there on the rock in Horeb, and thou hast smitten on the rock, and waters have come out from it, and the people have drunk.' And Moses doth so before the eyes of the elders of Israel,

Ecco, io starò davanti a te, là sulla roccia in Horeb; tu percuoterai la roccia, ne scaturirà dell'acqua e il popolo berrà». Mosè fece così davanti agli occhi degli anziani d'Israele.

7 a nd he calleth the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the `strife' of the sons of Israel, and because of their `trying' Jehovah, saying, `Is Jehovah in our midst or not?'

Perciò chiamò quel luogo Massa e Meriba a motivo della contesa dei figli d'Israele, e perché avevano tentato l'Eterno, dicendo: «E' l'Eterno in mezzo a noi, o no?».

8 A nd Amalek cometh, and fighteth with Israel in Rephidim,

Allora venne Amalek a combattere contro Israele a Refidim.

9 a nd Moses saith unto Joshua, `Choose for us men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to-morrow I am standing on the top of the hill, and the rod of God in my hand.'

E Mosè disse a Giosuè: «Scegli per noi degli uomini ed esci a combattere contro Amalek; domani io starò sulla vetta del colle col bastone di DIO in mano».

10 A nd Joshua doth as Moses hath said to him, to fight with Amalek, and Moses, Aaron, and Hur, have gone up the top of the height;

Giosuè fece come Mosè gli aveva detto e combattè contro Amalek, mentre Mosè, Aaronne e Hur salirono sulla vetta del colle.

11 a nd it hath come to pass, when Moses lifteth up his hand, that Israel hath been mighty, and when he letteth his hands rest, that Amalek hath been mighty.

Or avvenne che, quando Mosè alzava la sua mano, Israele vinceva; quando invece abbassava la sua mano, vinceva Amalek.

12 A nd the hands of Moses heavy, and they take a stone, and set under him, and he sitteth on it: and Aaron and Hur have taken hold on his hands, on this side one, and on that one, and his hands are stedfast till the going in of the sun;

Ma le mani di Mosè si erano fatte pesanti, così essi presero una pietra e gliela posero sotto, ed egli vi sedette sopra mentre Aaronne e Hur sostenevano le sue mani, l'uno da una parte, l'altro dall'altra così le sue mani rimasero ferme fino al tramonto del sole.

13 a nd Joshua weakeneth Amalek and his people by the mouth of the sword.

Perciò Giosué sconfisse Amalek e la sua gente, passandoli a fil di spada.

14 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Write this, a memorial in a Book, and set in the ears of Joshua, that I do utterly wipe away the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens;'

Poi l'Eterno disse a Mosè: Scrivi questo fatto in un libro, perché se ne conservi il ricordo, e fa' sapere a Giosuè che io cancellerò interamente di sotto al cielo la memoria di Amalek.

15 a nd Moses buildeth an altar, and calleth its name Jehovah-Nissi,

Mosè costruì quindi un altare, al quale pose nome: L'Eterno è la mia bandiera»; e disse:

16 a nd saith, `Because a hand on the throne of Jah, war to Jehovah with Amalek from generation -- generation.'

La mano è stata alzata contro il trono dell'Eterno, e l'Eterno farà guerra ad Amalek di generazione in generazione».
