1 A nd sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, `Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;

I discepoli dei profeti dissero ad Eliseo: «Ecco, il luogo nel quale noi abitiamo con te è troppo piccolo per noi.

2 l et us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, `Go.'

Lasciaci andare fino al Giordano; là ciascuno di noi prenderà una trave e là ci faremo un luogo per abitarvi». Eliseo rispose: «Andate».

3 A nd the one saith, `Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, `I -- I go.'

Uno di loro disse: «Ti prego, degnati di venire con i tuoi servi». Egli rispose: «Verrò».

4 A nd he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,

Cosí andò con loro. Giunti al Giordano, si misero a tagliare alcuni alberi.

5 a nd it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, `Alas! my lord, and it asked!'

Mentre uno abbatteva un tronco, il ferro della scure gli cadde nell'acqua. Egli si mise quindi a gridare e disse: «Ah, mio signore, questo l'avevo preso in prestito».

6 A nd the man of God saith, `Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,

L'uomo di DIO domandò: «Dov'è caduto?». Egli indicò a lui il posto. Allora Eliseo tagliò un pezzo di legno, lo getto in quel punto e fece venire a galla il ferro.

7 a nd saith, `Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.

Poi disse: «Prendilo». Cosí egli stese la mano e lo prese.

8 A nd the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, `At such and such a place my encamping.'

Mentre il re di Siria era in guerra contro Israele, consultandosi con i suoi servi, disse: «Il mio accampamento sarà nel tal posto».

9 A nd the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, `Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

Allora l'uomo di DIO mandò a dire al re d'Israele: «Guardati dal trascurare quel tal luogo, perchè vi stanno scendendo i Siri».

10 a nd the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

Perciò il re d'Israele mandò gente verso il luogo che l'uomo di DIO gli aveva indicato e di cui l'aveva messo in guardia. Cosí egli mantenne in quel luogo vigilanza; e ciò avvenne non una o due volte soltanto.

11 A nd the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, `Do ye not declare to me who of us for the king of Israel?'

Molto turbato in cuor suo per questa cosa, il re di Siria convocò i suoi servi e disse loro: «Non sapete dirmi chi dei nostri parteggia per il re d'Israele?».

12 A nd one of his servants saith, `Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'

Uno dei suoi servi rispose: «Nessuno, o re mio signore, ma Eliseo, il profeta che è in Israele, fa sapere al re d'Israele perfino le parole che tu dici nella camera da letto».

13 A nd he saith, `Go ye and see where he, and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, `Lo -- in Dothan.'

Allora il re disse: «Andate a vedere dove si trova, perché lo possa mandare a prendere». Gli fu riferito: «Ecco, si trova a Dothan».

14 A nd he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.

Cosí il re vi mandò cavalli, carri e un grande esercito; essi giunsero di notte e circondarono la città.

15 A nd the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, `Alas! my lord, how do we do?'

L'indomani il servo dell'uomo di DIO si alzò al mattino presto e uscí? ed ecco, la città era circondata da un esercito con cavalli e cavalieri. Allora il suo servo gli disse: «Ah, cosa faremo, mio signore?».

16 A nd he saith, `Fear not, for more they who with us than they who with them.'

Egli rispose: «Non temere, perché quelli che sono con noi, sono piú numerosi di quelli che sono con loro».

17 A nd Elisha prayeth, and saith, `Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

Poi Eliseo pregò e disse: «O Eterno, ti prego, apri i suoi occhi, perché possa vedere». L'Eterno allora aperse gli occhi del giovane e questi vide; ed ecco il monte era pieno di cavalli e di carri di fuoco, tutt'intorno ad Eliseo.

18 A nd they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

Come i Siri scendevano verso Eliseo, questi pregò l'Eterno e disse: «Ti prego, colpisci questa gente di cecità» Ed egli li accecò, secondo la parola d'Eliseo.

19 A nd Elisha saith unto them, `This not the way, nor this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.

Allora Eliseo disse loro: «Non è questa la strada e non è questa la città: seguitemi e io vi condurrò dall'uomo che cercate». Quindi li condusse a Samaria.

20 A nd it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, `Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!

Quando giunsero a Samaria, Eliseo disse: «O Eterno, apri loro gli occhi, perché vedano». L'Eterno aperse loro gli occhi ed essi videro; ed ecco, si trovavano dentro Samaria.

21 A nd the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, `Do I smite -- do I smite -- my father?'

Quando il re d'Israele li vide, disse ad Eliseo: «Padre mio, li devo uccidere? Li devo uccidere?».

22 A nd he saith, `Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'

Egli rispose: «Non ucciderli! Uccideresti forse quelli che hai fatto prigionieri con la tua spada e col tuo arco? Metti loro davanti pane e acqua, affinché mangino e bevano e poi ritornino dal loro signore».

23 A nd he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.

Allora egli preparò per loro un grande banchetto. Dopo che ebbero mangiato e bevuto, li congedò, ed essi ritornarono dal loro signore. Cosí le bande dei Siri, non vennero piú a fare incursioni nel territorio d'Israele.

24 A nd it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,

Dopo queste cose avvenne che Ben-Hadad, re di Siria, radunò tutto il suo esercito e salí contro Samaria per stringerla d'assedio.

25 a nd there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.

Or ci fu una grande carestia in Samaria; e i Siri la tennero assediata a tal punto che una testa d'asino era venduta per ottanta sicli d'argento e il quarto di un kab di sterco di colombi per cinque sicli d'argento.

26 A nd it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, `Save, my lord, O king.'

Mentre il re d'Israele passava sulle mura, una donna gli gridò e disse: «Aiuto, o re, mio signore!».

27 A nd he saith, `Jehovah doth not save thee -- whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'

Egli le rispose: «Se non ti aiuta l'Eterno, dove posso io trovare aiuto per te? Forse con i prodotti dell'aia o del torchio?».

28 A nd the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;

Poi il re aggiunse: «Che cos'hai?» Ella rispose: «Questa donna mi ha detto "Dammi tuo figlio perché lo mangiamo oggi; mio figlio lo mangeremo domani".

29 a nd we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'

Cosí abbiamo fatto cuocere mio figlio e l'abbiamo mangiato. Il giorno seguente io le ho detto: "Dammi tuo figlio perché lo mangiamo". Ma essa ha nascosto suo figlio».

30 A nd it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth on his flesh within.

Quando il re udí le parole della donna, si stracciò le vesti. Mentre passava sulle mura, il popolo guardò, ed ecco sotto egli portava un cilicio sulla carne.

31 A nd he saith, `Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add -- if it remain -- the head of Elisha son of Shaphat -- upon him this day.'

Allora il re disse: «DIO mi faccia questo e anche peggio, se oggi la testa di Eliseo, figlio di Shafat, resterà ancora sulle sue spalle!».

32 A nd Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, `Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'

Or Eliseo se ne stava seduto in casa sua, e con lui sedevano gli anziani. Il re mandò davanti a sé un uomo, prima però che il messaggero giungesse da lui egli disse agli anziani: «Vedete che questo figlio di un assassino ha mandato qualcuno a tagliarmi la testa? Fate attenzione, quando il messaggero arriva, chiudete la porta e tenetelo fermo alla porta. Non si sente forse dietro di lui il rumore dei passi del suo signore?».

33 H e is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, `Lo, this the evil from Jehovah: what -- do I wait for Jehovah any more?'

Mentre egli stava ancora parlando con loro, ecco scendere da lui il messaggero. Il re allora disse: «Ecco questa calamità viene dall'Eterno; cosa potrei ancora io sperare dall'Eterno?».
