1 A nd Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

وَكانَ بَنو إسْرائِيلَ يُقيمونَ فِي شِطِّيمَ. فِي ذَلِكَ الوَقتِ، بَدَأ رِجالُ إسْرائِيلَ يَزنُونَ مَعَ نِساءٍ مُوآبِيّاتٍ.

2 a nd they call for the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people eat, and bow themselves to their gods,

وَدَعَتِ النِّساءُ المُوآبِيّاتُ بَني إسْرائِيلَ لِلمُشارَكَةِ فِي الذَّبحِ لإلِهَتِهِنَّ. فَأكَلَ بَنو إسْرائِيلَ مِنَ الذَّبائِحِ وَعَبَدُوا آلِهَةَ المُوآبِيِّينَ.

3 a nd Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

وَهَكَذا بَدَأ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ يَعبُدُونَ الإلَهَ المُزَيَّفَ بَعلَ فَغُورَ، مِمّا أغْضَبَ اللهَ عَلَى إسْرائِيلَ.

4 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah -- over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.'

فَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى: «خُذْ كُلَّ قادَةِ الشَّعبِ وَعَلِّقْهُمْ خَارِجاً تَحْتَ الشَّمْسِ أمامَ اللهِ ، فَيَزُولُ غَضَبُ اللهِ عَلَى إسْرائِيلَ.»

5 A nd Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.'

فَقالَ مُوسَى لِقُضاةِ إسْرائِيلَ: «عَلَى كُلِّ واحِدٍ مِنكُمْ أنْ يَقتُلَ أقرِباءَهُ الَّذِينَ يَعبُدُونَ الإلَهَ المُزَيَّفَ بَعلَ فَغُورَ.»

6 A nd lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

وَفِي تِلكَ اللَّحظَةِ، أتَى أحَدُ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ وَمَعَهُ امْرأةٌ مِديانِيَّةٌ قَدْ أحضَرَها إلَى إخْوَتِهِ. فَعَلَ هَذا أمامَ مُوسَى وَكُلِّ بَني إسْرائِيلَ، الَّذِينَ كانُوا يَبكُونَ فِي مَدخَلِ خَيمَةِ الاجْتِماعِ.

7 a nd Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

وَحِينَ رَأى فِينْحاسُ بْنُ ألِيعازارَ بْنِ هارُونَ الكاهِنِ هَذا، تَرَكَ مَكانَ تَجَمُّعِ الشَّعبِ، وَأمسَكَ بِرُمحِهِ،

8 a nd goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman -- unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

وَلَحِقَ بِالرَّجُلِ الإسْرائِيلِيِّ إلَى الخَيمَةِ. وَطَعَنَ فِينْحاسُ الإسْرائِيلِيَّ وَالمَرأةَ المِديانِيَّةَ فِي بَطنَيهِما. حِينَئِذٍ، تَوَقَّفَ الوَباءُ فِي بَني إسْرائِيلَ.

9 a nd the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

وَكانَ عَدَدُ الَّذِينَ ماتُوا مِنَ الوَباءِ أربَعَةً وَعِشرِينَ ألفاً.

10 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

وَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى:

11 ` Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

«فِينْحاسُ بْنُ ألِيعازَرَ بنِ هارُونَ الكاهِنِ أنقَذَ بَني إسْرائِيلَ مِنْ غَضَبِي. فَقَدْ أظْهَرَ غِيرَتِي بِغِيرَتِهِ عَلَى مَجْدِي فِي وَسْطِهِمْ. وَلِذَلِكَ لَمْ أقتُلْ بَني إسْرائِيلَ بِسَبِبِ غَيرَتِي.

12 ` Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

فَقُلْ لَهُ إنِّي أعقِدُ عَهدَ صَداقَةٍ وَسَلامٍ مَعَهُ.

13 a nd it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

وَهَذا هُوَ العَهدُ: هُوَ وَنَسلُهُ الَّذِي سَيَأتِي مِنْ بَعدِهِ سَيَكُونُونَ دائِماً كَهَنَةً. لأنَّهُ كانَ غَيُّوراً عَلَى اللهِ وَمُحِبّاً لَهُ، فَأنْقَذَ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ.»

14 A nd the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

وَكانَ اسْمُ الإسْرائِيلِيِّ الَّذِي قُتِلَ مَعَ المَرأةِ المِديانِيَّةِ زِمْرِي بْنَ سالُو. وَهُوَ قائِدٌ لِعائِلَةٍ فِي قَبِيلَةِ شِمْعُونَ.

15 a nd the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people -- of the house of a father in Midian he.

أمّا اسْمُ المَرأةِ الَّتِي قُتِلَتْ فَهُوَ كُزْبِي بِنتَ صُورٍ. وَأبوها رَئِيسٌ فِي بَعْضِ قَبائِلِ مِديانَ.

16 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

وَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى:

17 ` Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

«عادُوا المِديانِيِّينَ وَاقتُلُوهُمْ،

18 f or they are adversaries to you with their frauds, which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.'

لأنَّهُمْ عادُوكُمْ بِسَبَبِ المَكِيدَةِ الَّتِي احتالُوا عَلَيكُمْ بِها فِي فَغُورَ، وَبِسَبَبِ المَكِيدَةِ الَّتِي دَبَّرُوها مِنْ خِلالِ قَرِيبَتِهِمْ كُزْبِي بِنتِ أحَدِ رُؤَساءِ مِديانَ، الَّتِي قُتِلَتْ فِي وَقتِ الوَباءِ بِسَبَبِ ما حَدَثَ فِي فَغُورَ.»
