1 A nd Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

În timp ce Israel locuia la Şitim, bărbaţii din popor au început să se destrăbăleze cu femei moabite,

2 a nd they call for the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people eat, and bow themselves to their gods,

care i-au invitat să ia parte împreună cu ele la jertfele pe care le aduceau zeilor lor. Poporul a mâncat şi s-a prosternat înaintea zeilor acestora.

3 a nd Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

Astfel Israel s-a alipit şi el de Baal-Peor. Domnul s-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel

4 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah -- over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.'

şi i-a zis lui Moise: „Ia toate căpeteniile poporului şi spânzură-i înaintea Domnului, în lumina soarelui, pentru ca mânia cea aprigă a Domnului să se depărteze de Israel.“

5 A nd Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.'

Moise le-a zis judecătorilor lui Israel: „Fiecare dintre voi trebuie să ucidă pe bărbaţii de sub conducerea lui care s-au alipit de Baal-Peor.“

6 A nd lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

La un moment dat a sosit un bărbat israelit aducând în familia lui o femeie midianită, sub privirea lui Moise şi sub privirea întregii adunări a lui Israel, care plângea la intrarea Cortului Întâlnirii.

7 a nd Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

Când preotul Fineas, fiul lui Elazar, fiul lui Aaron, a văzut acest lucru, s-a ridicat din mijlocul adunării, a luat o suliţă în mână

8 a nd goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman -- unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

şi a intrat după bărbatul israelit în cort. I-a străpuns prin stomac pe amândoi, atât pe bărbatul israelit, cât şi pe femeia aceea. Astfel a fost oprită urgia împotriva israeliţilor,

9 a nd the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

dar cei care au murit în această urgie au fost în număr de douăzeci şi patru de mii.

10 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Domnul i-a zis lui Moise:

11 ` Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

„Fineas, fiul lui Elazar, fiul preotului Aaron, a abătut mânia Mea de la israeliţi, căci a fost plin de râvnă ca şi Mine, în mijlocul lor, şi de aceea, în râvna Mea, nu i-am nimicit de tot pe israeliţi.

12 ` Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

Să-i spui că închei cu el un legământ de pace.

13 a nd it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.'

Va fi pentru el şi pentru urmaşii lui un legământ al unei preoţii veşnice, pentru că a fost plin de râvnă pentru Dumnezeul lui şi a făcut ispăşire pentru israeliţi.“

14 A nd the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

Numele bărbatului israelit care a fost ucis împreună cu femeia midianită era Zimri, fiul lui Salu, conducătorul unei familii de-a simeoniţilor.

15 a nd the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people -- of the house of a father in Midian he.

Numele femeii midianite ucise era Cozbi, fiica lui Ţur, un conducător de clan şi de familie midianită.

16 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Domnul i-a zis lui Moise:

17 ` Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

„Pe midianiţi să-i priviţi ca duşmani şi să-i nimiciţi,

18 f or they are adversaries to you with their frauds, which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.'

căci şi ei v-au privit ca pe nişte duşmani şi v-au înşelat prin vicleniile lor, folosindu-se de Peor şi de Cozbi, fiica acelui conducător midianit, femeia care a fost ucisă în ziua urgiei cauzate de închinarea înaintea lui Peor.“
